Centenary Supplement to the Borough of Godalming 1914 – 1918 Roll of Honour This supplement was created and research by WO1 RN Ret’d Andrew Jeffery, Louise Goodfellow, Godalming Town Clerk and Maj Graham Hodgeson MBE TD RE(V) to mark the centenary of the First World War. Their research identified 281 men of the old Borough of Godalming who had died during WW1 of which 117 had not been recorded in the original 1914 – 1918 Roll of Honour. When compiling this supplement the criteria used was that an individual’s name could be identified in the Commonwealth War Grave Records of those who died in WW1, a connection with the town had to be established either by having been listed in the original Roll of Honour, having a name recorded on an existing WW1 War Memorial located within the town or being identified as having been a resident of the town by records held within the Local and National Archives. The records available in order to create this supplement were not available to Norah Easterbrook, the creator of the original Roll of Honour, who was solely reliant on the information provided to her at the time. With the exception of seven names, each date of death has been verified by the Commonwealth War Grave Commission records. Those outstanding names have not been verified because insufficient data exists to be certain of an individual’s identity. With the exception of the staff who were from the borough, the names of the 670 former pupils, masters or staff of Charterhouse School recorded in the Memorial Chapel are not included in either the original or supplement to the Godalming Roll of Honour.
