  • 2017 CFAC Donation Letter and Form.Pdf
Dear Friend: Please help us beat last year’s fundraising record by donating to our 5th Annual 2017 Comedy For A Cause Auction and Benefit Show for PS11 The William T Harris Elementary School, located in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York City. PS 11 is a wonderfully diverse school with a large percentage of the population qualifying for “free lunch”. The Department of Education provides the basics, but it’s up to the community to provide everything else. The PS11 PTA has made it their mission to make up for this shortfall and more with innovative fundraisers like Comedy For A Cause. Over the past four years, our comedy benefit has raised enough money to enable the PTA to pay for all the school supplies for over 900 students, enrichment programs in the arts (Rioult dance, Rosie's Theater Kids, Julliard Music, Circle in the Square playwriting, etc.), additional teachers to help reduce class size, math and literacy consultants, teacher development and so much more. PS11 was chosen by the New York City Schools Chancellor as a Model School to partner up with two other elementary schools to show them how they can improve practices. Each year, our comedy benefit sells out in a matter of hours. We’ve featured top national talent including Gilbert Gottfried, John Oliver, Jerry Seinfeld, Jim Gaffigan, Jim Norton, Colin Quinn, Susie Essman, Michael Che, Dave Attell, Artie Lange, Judy Gold, Donnell Rawlings and many more. This year’s event will be held at Gotham Comedy Club in NYC on Tuesday, February 7, 2017.

  • This Installation Explores the Final Girl Trope. Final Girls Are Used in Horror Movies, Most Commonly Within the Slasher Subgenre
This installation explores the final girl trope. Final girls are used in horror movies, most commonly within the slasher subgenre. The final girl archetype refers to a single surviving female after a murderer kills off the other significant characters. In my research, I focused on the five most iconic final girls, Sally Hardesty from A Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Laurie Strode from Halloween, Ellen Ripley from Alien, Nancy Thompson from A Nightmare on Elm Street and Sidney Prescott from Scream. These characters are the epitome of the archetype and with each girl, the trope evolved further into a multilayered social commentary. While the four girls following Sally added to the power of the trope, the significant majority of subsequent reproductions featured surface level final girls which took value away from the archetype as a whole. As a commentary on this devolution, I altered the plates five times, distorting the image more and more, with the fifth print being almost unrecognizable, in the same way that final girls have become. Chloe S. New Jersey Blood, Tits, and Screams: The Final Girl And Gender In Slasher Films Chloe S. Many critics would credit Hitchcock’s 1960 film Psycho with creating the genre but the golden age of slasher films did not occur until the 70s and the 80s1. As slasher movies became ubiquitous within teen movie culture, film critics began questioning why audiences, specifically young ones, would seek out the high levels of violence that characterized the genre.2 The taboo nature of violence sparked a powerful debate amongst film critics3, but the most popular, and arguably the most interesting explanation was that slasher movies gave the audience something that no other genre was able to offer: the satisfaction of unconscious psychological forces that we must repress in order to “function ‘properly’ in society”.

Historic Preservation in HistoricMichigan Preservation Big Rapids Housing Commission and Hollander Development Nisbett Building and Fairman Building Rehabilitation Projects Nisbett Building The Big Rapids Housing Commission, responding to increasing demand for high quality affordable housing, recognized that a downtown location offered potential residents a broader and more accessible service base than more suburban locations while expanding Fairman Building the market for downtown merchants. The commission partnered with Hollander Development to rehabilitate the Nisbett and Fairman Buildings, located in the heart of Big Rapids. By combining a wide variety of public and private funding with the federal and state historic preservation tax credits, the development team was able to make this combined $5.2-million-dollar investment possible. The projects created 47 new residential units, 38 of which are guaranteed to be affordable units; rehabilitated nearly 126,000 square feet of under- utilized commercial space; and created outdoor space for the use of the residents. The partnership between the Big Rapids Housing Commission and Hollander Development demonstrates that creativity is the key to reinvigorating communities. Historic Preservation in HistoricMichigan Preservation Eric, Tobi and Ryan Breisach 714 Wheaton Avenue, Kalamazoo, State TaxCredit Project The house at 714 Wheaton Avenue was built in 1891 and modified in 1950 by removing the front porch and building an enclosed stair addition to convert the resource to a triplex rental. The interior’s historic character suffered from the installation of false ceilings, inappropriate materials that covered plaster walls and floors, and water damage. Eric and Ryan Breisach, the father and son construction crew, hired a local contractor to help them finish a complete rehabilitation of the resource during the summer and fall of 2003.

  • Moving Forward at the Detroit Historical Society!
1 WINTER 2018 Moving Forward at the Detroit Historical Society! At the Detroit Historical Society, 2017 has been a time of transformation. Three years of work on Detroit 67: Looking Back to Move Forward came to fruition this year, and the efforts that went into it led us to adopt a new model for engaging the public in creating programming and exhibitions in our museums. Our work is stronger for it, as evidenced by positive reviews, awards and steady increases in visitor numbers driven by the Detroit 67: Perspectives exhibition. Most importantly, however, our organization changed from the inside out. Our model for engagement, Engage, Refect, Act (ERA), incorporates a three-step process for commencing work on new programs and exhibitions at our museums: engage the community, refect on what we learn and inspire visitors to action based on the relevance of history to today. We are committed to applying this model internally and externally as we work to tell Detroit’s stories and why they matter. That means that we are engaging the talents of our staff across departments to strengthen and streamline our work in the same way that we are engaging the public and other cultural institutions to inform upcoming programs and exhibits. In October, the Detroit Historical Society and our partners at the Detroit Institute of Arts and the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History were honored with the Michigan Museum Association’s 2017 Peninsulas Prize in recognition of our unique collaboration on the Detroit 67 project. This was wonderful evidence of the transformational power of the ERA model.

  • Halloween Should Be Spooky, Not Scary! Governor Cuomo Asks for Your Help to Make Sure Everyone Has a Healthy and Safe Halloween
Halloween should be spooky, not scary! Governor Cuomo asks for your help to make sure everyone has a healthy and safe Halloween. Halloween celebrations and activities, including trick-or-treating, can be filled with fun, but must be done in a safe way to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The best way to celebrate Halloween this year is to have fun with the people who live in your household. Decorating your house or apartment, decorating and carving pumpkins, playing Halloween-themed games, watching spooky movies, and trick-or-treating through your house or in a backyard scavenger hunt are all fun and healthy ways to celebrate during this time. Creative ways to celebrate more safely: • Organize a virtual Halloween costume party with costumes and games. • Have a neighborhood car parade or vehicle caravan where families show off their costumes while staying socially distanced and remaining in their cars. • In cities or apartment buildings, communities can come together to trick-or-treat around the block or other outdoor spaces so kids and families aren’t tempted to trick-or-treat inside – building residents & businesses can contribute treats that are individually wrapped and placed on a table(s) outside of the front door of the building, or in the other outdoor space for grab and go trick-or-treating. • Make this year even more special and consider non-candy Halloween treats that your trick- or-treaters will love, such as spooky or glittery stickers, magnets, temporary tattoos, pencils/ erasers, bookmarks, glow sticks, or mini notepads. • Create a home or neighborhood scavenger hunt where parents or guardians give their kids candy when they find each “clue.” • Go all out to decorate your house this year – have a neighborhood contest for the best decorated house.
