Scottish Birds, the official journal of the Scottish Ornithologists' Club, publishes original material relating to ornithology in Scotland; papers concerned with status and distribution are particularly invited. All papers are considered by an Editorial Panel and, where appro­ priate, are scrutinised by specialist referees. Authors are advised to invite comment from friends or colleagues, and if necessary to make amendments, before submitting their papers. Short notes on unusual observations or records are also accepted. (Advice on the submis­ sion of contributions will be found on the inside back cover.) Papers and short notes should be sent, in the first instance, to The Editor, Scottish Birds, 21 Regent Terrace, Edinburgh EH75BT. '!Wo numbers of Scottish Birds are published each year, in early June and December. The winter number contains the Scottish Bird Report, which includes rarity descriptions (these should be sent to the SBR Editor: Angus Hogg, Kirklea, Crosshill, Maybole, Ayrshire KA19 7RJ). Scottish Birds is issued free to members of the Scottish Ornithologists' Club, who also receive a quarterly newsletter, Scottish Bird News, which carries items of topical interest, Club news and notices, and book reviews. Details of SOC membership rates are given below. Scottish Birds and Scottish Bird News are available to non-members at a subscription rate (1986) of £25 .00. Binding arrangements are available for Scottish Birds; volumes cover two calendar years. The ScottIsh Ornithologists' Club was formed in 1936 to encourage all aspects of ornithology in Scotland. It has local branches in Aberdeen, Ayr, the Borders, Dumfries, Dundee, Edin­ burgh, Glasgow, Inverness, New Galloway, St Andrews, Stirling, Stranraer and Thurso, each with its own programme of field meetings and winter lectures. The Club's headquarters are at 21 Regent Terrace, Edinburgh EH7 5BT. The Waterston Library (probably the best ornithological library in Scotland), is available for reference during office hours (Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm). The SOC Bird Bookshop is one of the world's leading ornithological booksellers; it carries a large stock of English language titles and can supply any Natural History book in print. Much ofthe business is by mail order, but personal callers are welcomed during office hours. The current catalogue is available on request. The Bird Bookshop is run by the SOC for the benefit of ornithology in Scotland. Our observations have led us to adopt a simplified view of the paleogeography of the Greek mainland before the Alpine orogenesis. The subsequent varied tectonic units originate mainly from the following paleogeo- graphic areas: • A carbonate Arabo-African shelf margin which displays several lateral transitions, ridges and basins. On the Greek mainland this margin is represented by the Preapulian, Ionian, Gavrovo-Tripolis, Parnassos zones, the Olympus platform and probably the Kavala and Thassos marble. • A transition zone from the shelf units to the Tethys ophiolites (Pindos Zone, Styra, Argolis and Hydra, Eretrias new unit). • Tethys ophiolites, which might represent either an “ocean” fault zone or subduction of the lithosphere along a weak area. • A Hercynian continental mass (Serbomacedonian). This group is currently completed by the presence of a large tectonic mélange connected to the ophiolite overthrust. The material of 107 specimens of small mammals was collected in 19 localities of Epeirus in the years 1985 — 1989. Additional faunistic records were obtained by field observations. Together, information on the distribution of 14 species were obtained. From these Miller's water shrew {Neomys anomalus) is reported first time from this region. Some questions concerning the distribution and habitats of individual species are discussed. Key words. Mammaha, Insectívora, Rodentia, distribution, taxonomy, Epeirus, Greece. Introduction The mammal fauna of the west coast of the Balkan peninsula, south of Neretva river, belongs to the most interesting of Europe. The reason for this is above all an unusual- ly high occurrence of endemism which is typical for this area. So far, only the northernmost part of this area, i. e., Monte Negro, Jugoslavia has been investigated satisfactorily (Petrov 1979). From the rest of this area data are either almost completely absent (Albania) or they are very incomplete (Greece). Therefore, the present paper is intended to contribute to the knowledge of small mammals of Epeirus, a region which is situated in the north-west part of Greece, in the close proximity of Albania. The first data on small of this region were pubhshed by Miller (1912) who had at his disposal a small series of mammals from the island Korfu.

This report presents the results of the 2003 census, conducted between 27th and 31 March 2003 surveying a total of 323 islands and mainland sites along the west and north coasts of Scotland and Ireland. The focal species of this study, Cardamine barbaraeoides, is a narrow Greek endemic that has been confused taxonomically since its original description. Based on a detailed multivariate morphometric study, we provide here a set of morphological characters that enables the reliable identification of this species. In addition, we present an identification key to C. barbaraeoides and related taxa. We have revised herbarium specimens and literature data on the occurrence of this species in Greece and ascertained that it occurs only in the Pindos mountains (the Southern Pindos and partly the Northern Pindos floristic regions).

Abstract Atlantic Puffins Fratercula arctica were counted at all known colonies in Orkney (excluding Sule Skerry) during the 2016 breeding season. Counts of individuals (IND) were made during pre-laying and incubation at all 20 sites and at six sites where burrows where physically accessible. In 2016 the Atlantic Puffin population of Orkney was estimated to be 6,675 breeding pairs (based on the counts of apparently occupied burrows [AOB] where available, and assuming that one individual represented one breeding pair for the other sites). AOB counts were higher than the IND counts at all six colonies where both methods were used. Previous Orkney Atlantic Puffin population estimates of breeding pairs were mostly based on counts of individuals on land (INDL) made during late incubation and chick rearing. While caution must be used when comparing INDL counts between years the results suggest a decline in line with studies of other Northern Isles colonies. Introduction The Atlantic Puffin Fratercula arctica (hereafter ‘Puffin’) is a rocky crevice and burrow nesting seabird, whose range is restricted to the cold waters of the North Atlantic (Harris & Wanless 2011). Due to the Puffins’ nesting habits, often in remote or inaccessible locations, accurately determining their population size is difficult.
