Expert farceurs Tom Walls and Ralph Lynn are as happy as sandboys in their dual roles but, while Walls plays father and son with the customary glint in his eye, Lynn fails to bring the same vim to the For Valour of a Boer War veteran as he does to his shady, silly-ass grandson"; [3] whereas Sky Movies was more For Valour, writing, "Ben Travers contributes a clever screenplay with a sweetly-turned ending, and Walls who also directed and Lynn do first-class work"; [4] and TV Guide called it "One of Walls and Lynn's better British comedies. In this ground-breaking book, Derek B. Scott examines the cultural transfer of operetta from the German stage to Britain and the USA and offers a historical and critical survey of these operettas and their music. In the period 1900–1940, over sixty operettas were produced in the West End, and over seventy on Broadway. A study of these stage works is important for the light they shine on a variety of social topics of the period – from modernity and gender relations to new technology and new media – and these are investigated in the individual chapters. This book is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core at doi.org/10.1017/9781108614306. derek b. scott is Professor of Critical Musicology at the University of Leeds.

  • U DX304 Hull Theatre Programmes 1924-1947
Hull History Centre: Hull Theatre Programmes U DX304 Hull Theatre Programmes 1924-1947 Historical Background: The earliest records of theatres in Hull date from the 1760s, although there was a theatre on Lowgate in the early eighteenth century. In 1768, a New Theatre was built, which became the Theatre Royal, a name which was to be passed on to a whole series of theatres in Hull, until the beginning of the twentieth century. The current New Theatre originates from the Little Theatre, which was run from the Lecture Hall in Kingston Square. The Little Theatre Company bought the Hall in 1930. They then acquired the Assembly Rooms in 1939, which were then converted to the New Theatre. The Theatre was bought by a London company in 1951, and was sold to the Corporation in 1961. A brief history of other Hull Theatres can be found in the History Centre searchroom 'Useful Information' file. 1920 1 MEDORAH London run: Alhambra, January 22 nd – March 13 th (60 performances) Music: Vada Ennem Book & Lyrics Denn Spranklin English adaptation: Rupert Hazell English lyrics : Adrian Ross Additional numbers : John Ansell Director: E. Dagnell Choreographer: Will Bishop Musical Director : John Anstell Cast: Leo Stormont ( Sultan), Ada Reeve (Medorah), W.S. Percy ( Dadoolah), Jamieson Dodds (Vernon Grant ), Leslie Stiles ( Ambassador Manston), Margaret Campbell ( Mrs Manston) Songs: Tomorrow’s Another Day, There’s Always a Drawback, Like a Dream. Wonderful Joy, Hope Again, Love and My Soul Alone Story: In Caravanistan beauty is measured in physical bulk, the heavier the better. The Sultan’s eldest daughter, Medorah, is thin, too thin to be an eligible bride. Chancellor Dadoolah suggests she is sent to America for the purposes of putting on weight – a suggestion that delights her because she has fallen in love with Vernon Grant, the man who accompanied the American ambassador and his wife to a reception in the Sultan’s palace. They meet again in Washington, and when she is summoned back to Caravanistan , Vernon secretly follows. Meantime, after various adventures, Vernon is captured and forced to work as a slave in the Sultan’s household. With no hope of marrying his underweight daughter to a prince, the Sultan condemns her to marry his new slave – and thus Medorah and Vernon are happily united. Notes: The original publicity declared that “Medorah” was jointly produced by Mr. Bernard J. Hishin and Sir Oswald Stoll, but within a week of opening, the show was subject to a legal dispute in the Court of Chancery, with Violet Melnotte claiming (and winning) half-ownership in the copyright of the English version of this Dutch original.

In this article, I hope to argue that during the early 1990s the well- made play enjoyed a brief flourishing and momentary return (literally) to centre stage before it was superseded again - in much the same way that the likes of Terence Rattigan and Noël Coward were swept away by the Angry Young Men of the Royal Court during the 1950s. However, between 1991- 1994 I contend that the well-made play re-established itself, not only as a West End entertainment, but one which came of age in terms of formal experimentation and the introduction of political commentary into a genre which had always been perceived as conservative in both form and ideology.

The name Stovold appears more than any other. I have only dealt with one branch which appears to be a direct male line. The last six generations contain the name Frederick and the dates of birth are fairly authentic. Earlier registers may refer to baptisms or dates of birth, it is not always clear. One Christian name, the same as the father’s, made things more difficult. The family could be of Scandinavian origin. It is thought they may have come over at the time of the Vikings in the Ninth Century and, in fact, before the First War my Great Uncle Percy traced the name back to the time of William the Conqueror.

Most may be asked to direct a play already chosen; it may even be cast for them. I was lucky. Not only was I able to choose Rookery Nook and cast it, but I’ve had the support of colleagues throughout. Before I came to the University of Victoria in 1973, Rookery Nook was one of the first plays I worked on professionally in England, so it seems appropriate at this stage in my career to direct it.

Redemption? 247 Afterword: Douglas Jardine 272 Bibliography 281 CHAPTER 1 BORN TO RULE DOUGLAS ROBERT Jardine was born in Bombay on 23 October 1900 into a Scottish colonial family. The Jardines originally hailed from France and came over to Britain with William the Conqueror and the Normans in 1066. The chief branch of the family settled in Dumfriesshire in south-west Scotland in the 14th century and engaged in many a bloody skirmish over disputed territory with their English rivals across the Border. According to the Scottish writer Alex Massie, the Border bred hard men, quick to resort to violence and slow to forget. ‘The Jardine family motto, “Cave Adsum”, means “Beware, I am here.” It is a statement of fact, a warning and a threat. It seems appropriate for the author of Bodyline’s greatest hour.’1 In the 19th century the Jardine clan began to migrate to different parts of the world. Douglas Jardine was distantly related to William Jardine who co-founded Jardine-Matheson, the Hong Kong-based trading company in 1832, and to Frank and Alec Jardine, the Cape York pioneers who established a cattle station on the north-east peninsula of Australia in the 1860s.
