Annual Report Entrepreneurship & Creativity in Canadian Television & Film EDGE Annual Report Entrepreneurship & creativity in Canadian television & film LEADING CREATIVE We work in a sector brimming with creativity. And not just when it comes to developing television and film that captivates us, entertains us and keeps us demanding more. Canada’s independent producers are also imaginative entrepreneurs and marketers who are reinventing business models and constantly evolving to keep pace with a rapidly changing industry. They’re experimenting with new platforms and discovering new ways to connect with audiences through social media, PROGRAMMING HOURS interactive digital content and more. And they’re looking beyond Canada’s borders, pursuing more co-productions and more international financing. 315.6 Are they succeeding? You bet. The pages that follow tell the story. Canadian television and film producers are impressing audiences that have never enjoyed more choice. They’re winning awards, wowing critics and keeping us glued to our screens … whatever size or form that screen might take. At the Rogers Group of Funds, we’re proud to be a part of their success. Over the course of 35 years of industry transformations, we’ve been helping Canada’s independent producers bring their creative vision to life. PRODUCTIONS Robin C. Mirsky | Executive Director Rogers Group of Funds Philip B. Lind | Vice Chairman MILLION 102 Rogers Communications 1 $30.9 You’ve got a creative vision. But how do you turn it into reality? Canadian producers are savvy business people, constantly finding new, inventive ways to make projects happen. Some producers are seizing opportunities in the multiplatform universe. Urban Native Girl showcases First Nations fashionista Lisa Charleyboy as she transforms her popular website into a full-scale glossy magazine. Others have assembled an irresistible mix of ingredients. With its big rigs, serious weather and larger-than-life characters, the debut of Ice Road Truckers proved to be the History Channel’s most-watched show ever. In A Different Drummer, Academy-award-winning director John Zaritsky celebrates eccentrics, from inventors to soothsayers to the man who gave away his last $30 and took up residence in a Utah cave. Closet Monster Meanwhile, Fight Xchange pairs three young MMA fighters from SCanada with three counterparts in Japan, offering an unvarnished glimpse at what it takes to be best man — or woman — in the cage. Canadian producers are also telling stories with an original twist. Closet Monster features finger puppets and a talking hamster in a coming-of-age story about divorce, homophobia and the first stirrings of sexuality. Fall provides a beautifully nuanced take on the Catholic sex abuse scandals, culminating in a final scene the Toronto Star calls “sublime.” And Coconut Hero offers a darkly funny look at how growing up in small town Ontario can drive you to suicide — until you’re diagnosed with a potentially fatal brain tumour. Established in 1980, our revolving Telefund gives innovative producers the dollars they need when they need them. In 2014, 30 productions benefited from$18.7 million in funding. They’re identifying the hot topics and delving deep into the issues and trends that shape our lives. When fracking destroys your home, your heritage and your people, what do you do? Fractured Land follows a young Dene law student in his David-and-Goliath fight against big oil and gas. Other members of his generation aren’t so political, however. 25 Down asks why millennials aren’t lining up at the ballot box to exercise their most fundamental right in a democracy: the right to vote. It’s a cruel irony that three quarters of the world’s hungry are peasant farmers, paid so little for their harvest that they can’t feed their own families. Le paradoxe de la faim puts the spotlight on a global catastrophe in progress. When creditors start pounding on the door, do you put Picasso on the auction block? Beauty and Ruin reveals what WDetroit’s bankruptcy means for one of the country’s greatest art museums. Meanwhile, Last of the Blues-Devils celebrates the talent and tenacity of America’s original blues players, Fractured Land relegated for too many years to a ghettoized corner of the music industry. Urban Eagles: Our Wild Neighbours examines what happens when Canada’s largest bird of prey takes up residence in one of Canada’s largest cities. Finally, The Antibiotic Hunters takes us on a mission to uncover new infection-fighting drugs — a mission made increasingly urgent as antibiotic-resistant bugs wipe out our current arsenal. The Rogers Documentary Fund helps make it all possible, with $2.1 million for 35 productions in 2014.
