If you’re approaching via the M3 (from north or south) or from Winchester: • Get onto the A272 heading east towards Petersfield (there are various ways to do this – check your map or refer to the route planner at www.theaa.com for more detailed directions). • Cross over the junction with the A32 (there’s a petrol station on the right and a pub called Two for One straight ahead as you hit this junction). Walled Garden Cottage is about 3.3 miles from this junction. • Carry on the A272 past signs for Privett on your left and East Meon on your right. • Pass Bordean Farm on your left. Shortly after, after a bend, you’ll see the entrance to Bordean Manor Estate on your right. There are a couple of reflective bollards either side to mark the boundaries on either side of the driveway, and a 40mph sign just beyond. If you see signs for Froxfield and Highcross on your left – or start going down a windy hill – you’ve gone too far. • Turn into the driveway and follow it along. Chairman’s letter for Spring Newsletter A happy, if slightly belated, New Year to you all. May it bring you health, peace and prosperity. Some of you will know about the Care Quality Commission (CQC), the regulatory body that ensures standards of healthcare across a broad spectrum. In early December, the CQC gave the Rosemary Foundation 48 hours’ notice of a detailed inspection of our operation. This involved two inspectors spending the day going through our procedures, policies and practices with staff, as well as speaking to other healthcare providers, relatives of those we have cared for, trustees and other staff. For those involved, it was an intense, tiring process. I am more than delighted that the CQC’s report, of which a more detailed summary can be read elsewhere in this newsletter, gave the Foundation a glowing report. The overall rating was “Good”, with good gradings in the areas of safety, effectiveness, caring and leadership. You will not be surprised to learn that the rating for responsiveness to people’s needs was outstanding. In fact, there was not one criticism of the service, there were no recommendations for things that might be improved, and the word “outstanding” featured several times in the report. This has led several people, including me, to wonder exactly what you have to do in order to get an overall rating of outstanding. Nevertheless, this was a great report, and we are all immensely proud of the team who provide such a wonderful service to our community.

Barbara Pettegree One of The Rosemary Foundation’s joint managers, Barbara Pettegree, will be stepping down from her current position this year to spend a little more time with her husband and family. She says: “I was 65 in December and feel it is time to reduce my hours and help in the care of my mother (who will be 100 next January) and my grandchildren.” Barbara will nevertheless continue to work with The Rosemary Foundation to help with the running of the Hospice at Home team, albeit no longer on a full‐time basis. Barbara has been with The Rosemary Foundation since 1997 when the charity was formed, having trained as a nurse in the East End of London (Whipps Cross Hospital) in 1969, and then working as a very junior staff nurse in St Christopher’s Hospice, Sydenham where Dr Cicely Saunders was pioneering good end of life care (known then as terminal care). Barbara says, “Patients were very much at the centre of the care given and I can remember being quite surprised when a senior Doctor in the hospice thanked a patient for his time, at the end of a medical examination”. In 1980 Barbara joined the Sue Ryder Foundation and remained there until 1997 when Bordean House closed. During this period the team had done some preparatory work to provide a Hospice at Home Service, though this was never completed due to lack of support from the Area Health Authority.

    The Rise of Non-conformity in the Ramsdean, Langrish and Stroud Tithings of East Meon in the 19th Century This short paper examines the discovered evidence, documentary and physical of the origins, growth and practice of Non-conformist congregations in the eastern tithings of East Meon viz. Ramsdean, Stroud and Langrish, subsequently separated into the Administrative Parish of Langrish in 1894. A companion paper on the congregations and chapels of the village of East Meon itself is under preparation. These tithings are currently in the Ecclesiastic Parish of East Meon. Inevitably, given the ecclesiastical and governance unity of the parish in the 19th century until 1872 when St John the Evangelist Church at Langrish was built there is considerable connection/overlap with developments in East Meon. Two factors that to some extent differentiate Ramsdean and Stroud from East Meon proper are their greater proximity to the local market town of Petersfield and their distance from the parish church of All Saints at East Meon itself. The latter is highlighted by the very unusually chatty enumerator’s (Mr. Walter Goulding) preamble to the 1861 Census of the tithings which reads “Whilst this is a matter of congratulated [improvement in education and soil fertility], the want of Church accommodation in this district is to be much lamented; the nearest church is more than a mile and the majority of the houses more than two miles & many three miles.” He follows on with that despite the large tithes paid there “….is not one family in five that attends any church, so that most of the advantages of education must be lost from the want of ministerial institutions….” Obviously, a significant issue.
