Arizona, Linen Radio Cards Post Card Collection Section 2—G to Indians-Apache By Al Ring LINEN ERA (1930-1945 (1960?) New American printing processes allowed printing on postcards with a high rag content. This was a marked improvement over the “White Border” postcard. The rag content also gave these postcards a textured “feel”. They were also cheaper to produce and allowed the use of bright dyes for image coloring. They proved to be extremely popular with roadside establishments seeking cheap advertising. Linen postcards document every step along the way of the building of America’s highway infra-structure. Most notable among the early linen publishers was the firm of Curt Teich. The majority of linen postcard production ended around 1939 with the advent of the color “chrome” postcard. However, a few linen firms (mainly southern) published until well into the late 50s. Real photo publishers of black & white images continued to have success. Faster reproducing equipment and lowering costs led to an explosion of real photo mass produced postcards. Once again a war interfered with the postcard industry (WWII). During the war, shortages and a need for military personnel forced many postcard companies to reprint older views WHEN printing material was available. Photos at 43%. Continuity and Parkitecture: The Lookout of the Grand Canyon Linda Reeder Central Connecticut State University, New Britain, Connecticut [email protected] Summary Statement Mary E. J. Colter designed and supervised the construction of The Lookout,1 a rest house and observatory on a promontory of the Grand Canyon, in 1914. Built of “rough hewn stone quarried on the spot,”2 its irregular roofline echoes the geologic formations of the canyon below. Soon after its completion, The Lookout was described as seeming “a part of the rim itself.”3 Referencing archival documents and images, this paper will examine The Lookout in the context of its integration with the Grand Canyon. It will describe how this continuity mediates a connection between visitors and the canyon and explore how this connection influenced a quarter century of National Park Service (NPS) architecture. Background In the late nineteenth century, non-indigenous people began traveling to the Grand Canyon for its mineral resources and natural beauty. Tourism expanded in 1901 when the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway completed a spur line to the south rim. During a 1903 visit, President Theodore Roosevelt called the Grand Canyon an unparalleled natural wonder and said, “Leave it as it is. You can not improve on it. The ages have been at work on it, and man can only mar it. What you can do is to keep it for your children, your children’s children, and for all who come after you.”4 In 1908 Roosevelt declared 800,000 acres of the Grand Canyon a national monument, permanently protecting it.

Today is the 31st of July 2014. We’re at the home of Mary Katherine Hoover and this is our 4th interview session with Mary. My name is Tom Martin. So Mary, you were just telling me about the cemetery list here. And what were you saying, again? MH: I know that there are some of these people that were buried in different places because they had moved away and they had families where they moved to and I'm sure they were buried wherever their families were. One of the first ones I really know was Jake Barranca - ends with an 'a'. He was a bus driver. At one time he was 6’ 7” before he started losing his height. He had huge hands. He was a good friend. He worked at the Canyon. The first time I saw him was the first day I came to Grand Canyon in 1946. He was in an old truck with a fellow named Ken. I don't remember Ken's last name, he left not too long after that. They did everything with this old truck. They took the garbage out to the garbage dump. They took the supplies from the Bright Angel to the El Tovar, the El Tovar down to the Bright Angel, whoever needed it.
