Missouri 2000 Transportation Data Center Data Set Codebook NUMBER 2006-18 AUGUST 2006 Missouri 2000 Re-Release with VIN The University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute STATE OF MISSOURI 2000 MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENTS Introduction This code book documents data sets describing motor-vehicle traffic accidents that occurred in the State of Missouri during calendar year 2000. The data sets were developed by the Transportation Data Center at the University of Michigan's Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI) from data supplied by the Missouri State Patrol. The original data in the Missouri STARS protocol (State Traffic Accident Reporting System) have been formatted into three rectangular data sets documenting accident level, vehicle level, and person level information elements. The characteristics of these data sets are shown in the following table. 2000 MISSOURI DATA SETS DATA SET KEY VARIABLES CASES Accident MOCØØACC 1-75 193,778 Vehicle MOCØØVEH 1-75,101-145,170-191 358,157 Person MOCØØPER 1-75,101-145,170-191, 367,252 201-217 The letter "C" in the data set descriptor represents "CENSUS" since these data sets describe all motor vehicle accidents that occurred in the state during calendar year 2000 that were recorded by the State Patrol. The code book itself is divided into three sections that document the accident, vehicle, and person records, respectively. Univariate frequencies and frequency percentages displayed in each section were derived from the corresponding data set (i.e., accident frequencies from MOCØØACC, person frequencies from Missouri 2000 Introduction MOCØØPER, etc.). An index located at the end of the code book gives the variable number and code value where each word used in a variable name or code value definition may be located. Certain English connectives (e.g., "the", "and", "but", "while", etc.), proper names such as county names and police agency names, and other common words not likely to be of value in an index are not included. While every effort has been made to provide accurate, reliable data, inconsistencies may arise from the source data or from the reformatting procedures used. Consequently, the Data Center cannot guarantee the accuracy of the data, but will try to correct any discrepancies that are found. Please notify the Center of any errors that you may uncover (or of any suggestions or comments that you may have concerning the data or code book) by calling the Transportation Data Center (734)-763-3230 or by emailing [email protected]. For more information about our full line of services, please visit our website: http://www.umtri.umich.edu/tdc/. Abstroct This report describes a survey of 1986 model year domestic and imported cars. A total of 236 cars were examined, representing 90% of the cars domestically produced or imported to the United States for that model year. The data were collected by visiting car dealerships and surveying all models and body styles (i.e., 2-door, 4-door, station wagons, etc.). For each car surveyed, 31 secondary controls (e.g., front wiper, turn signal, dome light, etc.) were examined in order to answer the following questions: - Where were the switches for these controls located? - What kind of switches were used for each control? - What motions were used to operate these controls? - How were the switches labeled? - Were there any patterns in switch location or design by manufacturer? The report contains a large number of tables and figures that answer these questions.
