Thus begins a guerrilla war like no other, as Darkie moulds the soldiers — through brutal bullying and all manner of psychological ploys — into fanatics with only one purpose: hunting and killing the enemy. He is equally well-known to the enslaved natives and ruthlessly at home in the alien world of the Burma Darkies Mob and swamps. What kind of experiences could transform a British Officer into such a ravening horror? For over a year the hellish Darkies Mob continued with the Mob striking everywhere like bloody ghosts; freeing prisoners, sabotaging Japanese bases, destroying engineering Darkies Mob and always Darkies Mob in the most spectacular manner possible. Stranded, broken and alone, the soldiers are rallied and then drawn into the nightmare unit and world of Joe Darkie, a one man Jap ki Okay, first up, this is an unpleasant, Darkies Mob, quite possibly racist, war time comic compilation of the Battle cartoon strip Darkie's Mob. Stranded, broken and alone, the soldiers are rallied and then drawn into the nightmare unit and world of Joe Darkie, a one man Jap killing machine, who takes Japanese war time cruelty and then triples it. The comic is a relentless essay in the madness and wickedness of man against his fellow man on both sides of the war and Darkies Mob let up for one second in the Darkies Mob, excitement and threat. With a superb payoff at the end, Darkie's Mob is a thrill ride. Just not for the easily offended. CRITICAL AFRICAN STUDIES 2 www.up.ac.za/historical-heritage-studies CRITICAL AFRICAN STUDIES www.castup.co.za www.sayingno.co.za 3 How British war comics of the 60s, 70s and 80s aided the formulation of a militarised state-of-mind among white English speaking boys during apartheid. This exhibition explores the under-researched domain of British war comics and their indelible influence on English speaking boys during apartheid. It explores how war comics aided the tacit construction of a militarised state-of-mind, effectively buttressing the ideologies of the apartheid regime and former South African Defence Force (SADF). The germination of a militarised masculinity begins in childhood and toys are often echoes of the adult world. War toys such as toy guns reinforce the notion that a military solution is a masculine, collective and socially acceptable response. Cock and Nathan (1988: 299) cite Jochelson and Buntman who note that “toys embody social and cultural definitions of what constitutes appropriate interests, activities and (the) behaviour of children” The mythology of combat, perceived as inherently honourable and courageous, often has its origins within the formative realms of childhood, aided by toys, the media and popular literature. Apartheid-era war toys and comics books were almost exclusively masculine, including boy’s comics of the 1980s (Battle, Warlord, Battle Picture Library and Action). British comic books focused mainly on World War 1 and 2 narratives and dominated the children’s magazine shelves of newsagents such as CNA and Paperbacks of the 60s, 70s and 80s.

TIME, MEMORY, NOSTALGIA THE NINTH INTERNATIONAL GRAPHIC NOVEL AND COMICS CONFERENCE WEDNESDAY 27TH – FRIDAY 29TH JUNE 2018 BOURNEMOUTH UNIVERSITY, UK Retro – a looking to the past – is everywhere in contemporary culture. Cultural critics like Jameson argue that retro and nostalgia are symptoms of postmodernism – that we can pick and choose various items and cultural phenomena from different eras and place them together in a pastiche that means little and decontextualizes their historicity. However, as Bergson argues in Memory and Matter, the senses evoke memories, and popular culture artefacts like comics can bring the past to life in many ways. The smell and feel of old paper can trigger memories just as easily as revisiting an old haunt or hearing a piece of music from one’s youth. As fans and academics we often look to the past to tell us about the present. We may argue about the supposed ‘golden age’ of comics. Our collecting habits may even define our lifestyles and who we are. But nostalgia has its dark side and some regard this continuous looking to the past as a negative emotion in which we aim to restore a lost adolescence. In Mediated Nostalgia, Ryan Lizardi argues that the contemporary media fosters narcissistic nostalgia ‘to develop individualized pasts that are defined by idealized versions of beloved lost media texts’ (2). This argument suggests that fans are media dupes lost in a reverie of nostalgic melancholia; but is belied by the diverse responses of fandom to media texts. Moreover, ‘retro’ can be taken to imply an ironic appropriation.

Behind The Gates: The Wagner Free Institute of Science and its Neighborhood, 1865-today Abstract This paper explores the relationship between museums and the neighborhoods around them. It looks specifically at the agnerW Free Institute of Science in North Philadelphia. The research begins with the founding of the Wagner in 1855, then focuses on major changes in the institution and community through the 20th century, and ends with an observational analysis of the relationship today. The Wagner and its neighborhood had a close relationship through the 1950’s, when the neighborhood experienced a rapid demographic change and the Wagner simultaneously reduced its programs. This is a break from the founding ideals of the Wagner, which especially targeted underserved audiences. Today the relationship is murkier, the neighborhood is once again going through a period of rapid demographic change, but the Wagner does not view its neighborhood as its primary audience. This paper, ultimately, tries to explore the idea of communities: how communities are defined and who decides which communities are relevant.
