The Parable of the Bags of Gold

14 “Again, it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted his wealth to them. 15 To one he gave five bags of gold, to another two bags, and to another one bag,[a] each according to his ability. Then he went on his journey. 16 The man who had received five bags of gold went at once and put his money to work and gained five bags more. 17 So also, the one with two bags of gold gained two more. 18 But the man who had received one bag went off, dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money.

19 “After a long time the master of those servants returned and settled accounts with them. 20 The man who had received five bags of gold brought the other five. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘you entrusted me with five bags of gold. See, I have gained five more.’ 21 “His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’

22 “The man with two bags of gold also came. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘you entrusted me with two bags of gold; see, I have gained two more.’

23 “His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’

24 “Then the man who had received one bag of gold came. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘I knew that you are a hard man, harvesting where you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered seed. 25 So I was afraid and went out and hid your gold in the ground. See, here is what belongs to you.’

26 “His master replied, ‘You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed? 27 Well then, you should have put my money on deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned I would have received it back with interest.

28 “‘So take the bag of gold from him and give it to the one who has ten bags. 29 For whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them. 30 And throw that worthless servant outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

CATHOLIC BISHOPS’ CONFERENCE OF ENGLAND AND WALES Statement on the Publication of the IICSA Report Tuesday 10th November 2020 The in England and Wales welcomes the Report from the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse relating to the institutional response of the Church in its duty of care to protect children from sexual abuse and exploitation. We thank the IICSA Panel for their work. The Report will now inform the ongoing reform and improvement of safeguarding in all aspects of the Church’s life. An important aspect of the Inquiry’s work was the voice given to victims and survivors of abuse, including the accounts which they gave of their subsequent engagement with the Church. Listening attentively to their witness testimony has brought into sharp relief the extent of the damage this sexual abuse has had on their lives. We apologise to all victims and survivors who have not been properly listened to, or properly supported by us. By listening with humility to those who have suffered, we can contribute to the healing of the wounds of abuse, as well as learn from those most directly affected how we must improve the Church’s safeguarding standards, policies and procedures. This is an ongoing task and one to which we are wholly committed. Child sexual abuse is a crime. It is a crime that requires committed vigilance and strict procedures to ensure reporting to the statutory authorities. This is the Church’s policy. It is also why our safeguarding work needs to be continually reviewed and improved. Where there have been failings and inconsistency in the application of our safeguarding procedures, we acknowledge these and commit to actions which will bring about improvement. Abuse is an evil act against the most vulnerable; it must never be excused or covered up. Abuse committed against children and the consequent damage to people’s lives cannot be undone. For this, we apologise without reservation, and we are committed to listen attentively to the voices of those who have been abused. This report is an important moment in our safeguarding journey in the Catholic Church in our countries. It will now be considered in detail by us, the Bishops, at our Plenary Assembly beginning next week so we can explore how to integrate the findings of this important Inquiry into the life and work of the Church in order to consistently safeguard children and the vulnerable.

Vigil of Prayer – Sat. 21st November 2020

The International Eucharistic Congress for 2020 has been postponed until next year. So Cardinal Peter Erdo of Budapest-Estergom has asked that all parishes have a Holy Hour on Saturday 21st November – the Vigil of the Solemnity of Christ the King.

He has asked that “in the current epidemiological situation…we can also join in from our homes with our personal prayers. Let us take part in this common adoration, join with your parish, your community and your family. Let this worldwide adoration be the next station of our preparation for the 52nd IEC in Budapest, and let us relive the regenerating love of God.”

Cardinal Nichols has asked that this be disseminated across our as a moment for the Church to pray for all those affected by the current pandemic in England and Wales ( a poster is attached for your use). There is no set format for this, but all parishes and dioceses are asked to set aside some time on this date to have Adoration, to pray for the worldwide situation with Covid-19, and to enter into this preparation for the Eucharistic Congress next year.

Bishop Patrick and Fr Jonathan will be streaming an hour of Adoration from the Chapel in Bishop’s House from 4 - 5pm that afternoon and, if this would be helpful to you, please feel free to direct your parishioners to this. It can be found on the Bishop’s YouTube channel: www.YouTube.com/bishoppatrickmckinney

Here at St Marys our Holy Hour that day will be from 11.30am to 12.30pm

There is also a video produced by the organisers of the Congress at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5j2bWBfb

Saint Margaret's Day by Martin Ward

I saw Saint Margaret's face on traceries of stained glass. Beautiful, in all her finery.

An English rose with ancestry from King Alfred The Great and educated in Hungary.

Fleeing England when William The Conqueror came and claimed her Saxon family's throne.

Their ship was blown off course and found safe harbour in Scotland, where her hand was kissed by Malcolm.

In Scotland, she found love and her new husband-king found inspiration from her Christian education.

Margaret built the Queen's Ferries for pilgrims to visit shrines of and holy places where they were buried.

She could never see children starve in the cavernous glens or amongst the clans' lands of purple heather.

That face: looking down on me with purest piety gained from adoration of Our Lady and The Catholic Church.

Grandmother of the Plantagenet Kings; Margaret won Scottish hearts and brings us hope of better things.

Saint Margaret, an earthly queen, come saint, whose motherly traces guide us towards another Kingdom and Greater Place.

How these teddy bears were miraculously rescued after Derby school blaze

They have become a symbol of hope for the school

BY Zena Hawley 8 NOV 2020

(Image: Ruth Sellers) Two teddy bears which survived an arson attack on a Derby primary school were minutes away from being destroyed by a demolition digger when they were spotted sitting in a classroom window - with their arms around each other.

The bears were first spotted in the window of the nursery classroom at St Mary's Catholic Academy in Derby, several weeks ago by a number of mums. Mum Lucy Winter visited the site on Thursday and realised the bears were still there – sitting in the window with their arms around each other – after demolition work started on Monday.

She told fellow school mums Ruth Sellers, Amy Barlow and Victoria Brammer and on Friday morning they all drove to St Mary’s and called to workmen to stop just before the teddies were destroyed by a bulldozer.

Ruth, who has three children at the school, said everyone was over the moon that the teddies had been saved. She said: “When we saw a photo of the bears everyone felt quite emotional and we all agreed that we had to save them.

Just minutes to go before the building is flattened (Image: Ruth Sellers) "We drove to school on the Thursday and we were shouting at the workmen to stop, but they couldn’t hear us. I climbed on the wall and was shouting at them and the man driving the digger stopped and asked us what was up.

"We asked him to save the bears and he spun the digger away from the building so that his colleague could collect the bears and he brought them over to us.

“I know some people will think it’s a bit silly, but these bears are so symbolic.

"These two little bears stuck together through something really terrible and survived and I just think that’s a really good lesson for the pupils and a really good example of the St Mary’s spirit that has shone throughout this horrible time.

“I think the bears just really meant something to all of us and we wanted to make sure we could give them back to school. It will be a great story to tell the children in years to come that these were the two bears that survived the fire.”

Rescued in the nick of time by a worker from demolition company Cheshire Maintenance and Developments Ltd. (Image: Ruth Sellers) Ruth washed the bears and along with the other mums involved she returned them to nursery teachers at the school on Friday afternoon.

Executive head teacher Amanda Greaves said: “I’m absolutely delighted the bears have been saved. I have seen them numerous times when visiting the site, but the area was deemed too unsafe to enter.

"This once again reflects the level of strength, hope and love in the St Mary’s community.

"I would also like to thank the construction workers who took the time to respond in a caring and compassionate way and hope they realise the joy this will bring to many. I can’t wait to see the bears take pride of place in our new school in due course."

These sentiments were echoed by head teacher Gill Novak-Lemmings, who said: “The rescue of these two teddies is a testament to the wonderful community we have here at St. Mary’s.

"The fact that they were spotted, arm in arm, on a shelf is a symbol of the love and support we have received since the fire, including these two teddies.

"Furthermore, the fact that they have been rescued, has to be a symbol of hope.”

Washed and clean, the pair have now become a symbol of hope for the future and will eventually have their own space in the rebuilt school (Image: Ruth Sellers) This week St Mary’s pupils resumed face-to-face learning for the first time since the fire on Saturday, October 3. Years three, four, five and six have moved into St Benedict Catholic Academy in Duffield Road, Derby.

Children in nursery, reception, years one and two are based at the Diocesan Centre in Mornington Crescent, Mackworth and the neighbouring Christ the King Catholic Church.

A building has been identified for use by St Mary’s pupils as a medium-term solution until they are able to move to the new build. Plans are being made to adapt this existing building and the aim is that all pupils will be able to move in by early 2021.

Derbyshire police are still appealing for information about the incident. https://www.derbytelegraph.co.uk/news/derby-news/how-teddy-bears-were-miraculously-4677200

What did the actually say about same-sex civil partnerships?

In the last few weeks, some statements contained in the documentary Francesco by the director Evgeny Afineevsky have given rise to various reactions and interpretations. Below are some points from the Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales to help people understand correctly what the Holy Father said.

In an interview he gave more than a year ago, answered two separate questions at different times, but they have been edited and published as a single answer, without being put into context in the way they should have been, and this has created confusion. In the first place, the Holy Father had made a pastoral reference to the need for homosexually oriented sons or daughters not to suffer discrimination within their own families. That is what these words refer to: ‘Las personas homosexuales tienen derecho a estar en familia. No se puede echar de la familia a nadie ni hacerle la vida imposible por eso’ (Homosexual persons have a right to be part of a family. You cannot throw someone out of the family or make his or her life impossible for that).

The following section from the Post-Synodal Exhortation Amoris Lætitia on the family can shed some light on these expressions: ‘During the , we discussed the situation of families whose members include persons who experience same-sex attraction, a situation not easy either for parents or for children. We would like before all else to reaffirm that every person, regardless of sexual orientation, ought to be respected in his or her dignity and treated with consideration, while ‘every sign of unjust discrimination’ is to be carefully avoided, particularly any form of aggression and violence. Such families should be given respectful pastoral guidance, so that those who manifest a homosexual orientation can receive the assistance they need to understand and fully carry out God’s will in their lives’ (§ 250).

A later question in the interview was related to a local law ten years ago in Argentina on ‘matrimonios igualitarios de parejas del mismo sexo’ (equal marriages of same-sex couples) and the then Archbishop of Buenos Aires’ opposition to it. Pope Francis said about this that ‘es una incongruencia hablar de matrimonio homosexual’ (it is inconsistent to speak of homosexual marriage) and he added that, in precisely this context, he had spoken about these people’s right to be covered legally: ‘lo que tenemos que hacer es una ley de convivencia civil; tienen derecho a estar cubiertos legalmente. Yo defendí eso’ (what we need to have is a law of civil partnership; they have a right to be covered by the law. I defended that).

The Holy Father said this in an interview in 2014: ‘Marriage is between a man and a woman. Secular states want to justify civil unions to regulate different situations of people who live together, driven by the need to regulate financial matters between persons, for example ensuring health care. It is about agreements on various kinds of living together, of which there are so many I would not be able to list them. We have to look at different cases and evaluate them in all their variety.’ It is clear, therefore, that Pope Francis was referring to particular state arrangements, and certainly not to Church doctrine, which has been re-stated various times through the years.

10/11/2020 McCarrick Report: a sorrowful page the Church is learning from After pronouncing these words, he paused for a moment of silent prayer. The McCarrick Report, composed of 461 pages of documents and testimonies, is an exhaustive investigation into the knowledge and decision-making regarding Theodore McCarrick during his career as a priest, bishop and cardinal.

The Report, published by the Secretariat of State on the mandate of Pope Francis, is the result of a two-year investigative process.

Speaking upon its release on Tuesday, Cardinal Secretary of State said the Report "will also have an effect in this respect: in making all those involved in such choices more aware of the weight of their decisions or omissions. These are pages that encourage us to reflect deeply and ask ourselves what more we can do in the future, learning from the painful experiences of the past."

A charitable partnership for the pandemic

We all know the hardship which the Coronavirus is causing. Those who were already the most vulnerable in our diocese are the hardest-hit. So in May the diocese formed the Catholic Partnership for Covid Emergency Relief, with charities across the diocese.

As we enter a second national lockdown, we can be sure the challenges will be with us for many more months to come.

• Visit the partnership's page on the diocesan website

• Find out what we've achieved so far.

Meet the founding partners

The partnership brings together organisations with which parishes and individual Catholics have long supported - because of their Catholic heritage, or because we pray, give, and volunteer for them.

Parishes can be members too - two in Leicester are founder members. Currently the partnership includes:

• Agencies which serve homeless or vulnerable people: Emmanuel House, central Nottingham, The Friary, West Bridgford and the Padley Group, Derby.

• Blessed Sacrament and St Peter’s parishes in Leicester, whose Justice and Peace Group supports three foodbanks, including E2 Food Hub

• Two further foodbanks in Derbyshire: Hope for Belper and the Zink Project (High Peak).

We've reached over 5,000 people so far

In June 2020 we raised a grant of £36,102 from the Albert Gubay Charitable Foundation to provide emergency relief over the summer of 2020. That enabled the Diocese to help over 5,000 people at risk of hunger and homelessness in the pandemic.

• Download our report to find out what we have achieved so far. As the second lockdown looms, we're not going to stand by. We are ready to take the next step - and that is where you can help us.

Sign up your parish or organisation

The ministry of charity is at the heart of who we are as the Church. We're looking to expand the partnership to meet the challenges of this next phase of the pandemic. Partners will be able to:

• Form joint projects and funding bids to Catholic donors and others

• Recruit volunteers and support in parishes around the diocese

• Harness the power of Catholic social teaching to 'heal the world'.

If you, your parish or project see a need and would like to make common cause through the Catholic Partnership for Covid Emergency Relief, get in touch.

Can you help? Volunteers sought

We are particularly seeking volunteers with specific skills:

• writing funding bids to grantmaking trusts

• book-keeping, budgeting and monitoring expenditure of successful projects

• co-ordinating meetings by Zoom. For a chat about what help is needed, and how you might play a part, contact Paul Bodenham, Programme Leader for Social Action. Or come to a partnership meeting planned for our volunteers on Thursday 25 November to be held by Zoom. Get in touch if you'd like the joining details.

Through 2020 Greater Lincoln Active Faith Network has pulled together the efforts of the churches in Lincoln in order to serve the people of Lincoln during this difficult time. Join their annual Network Gathering on 12th November, 7.30pm on Zoom!

For the last 43 years, Faith in Families have provided struggling families across the East Midlands with hampers of toys and food for Christmas. These families have experienced difficult times and have been referred via the charity's School Social Work Service. Without such support these families will have nothing; children will have no presents to open on Christmas Day.

The aim of Faith in Families' Christmas Appeal is to ensure that these families don't go without each year. This year their aim is to provide 100 families across the region with a £100 voucher for a local supermarket. Visit their website to find out ways in which you can help a family under pressure this Christmas.

Faith in Families is a member of the Caritas Social Action Network
