April 2014 Copyright © 2014 Stellenbosch University All rights reserved ii Stellenbosch University http://scholar.sun.ac.za ABSTRACT This study engages with the complete novelistic oeuvre of the Zanzibari-born author Abdulrazak Gurnah, whose fiction is dedicated to the theme of migration. With each novel, however, Gurnah deploys innovative stylistic features as an analytic frame to engage with his signature topic. From his first novel to his eighth, Gurnah offers new insights into relocation and raises new questions about what it means to be a migrant or a stranger in inhospitable circumstances and how such conditions call for a negotiation of hospitable space. What gives each of his works a distinct aesthetic appeal is the artistic resourcefulness and versatility with which he frames his narratives, in order to situate them within their historical contexts. This allows him to interrogate the motives behind his characters’ actions (or behind their inaction). Gurnah, therefore, employs a variety of narrative perspectives that not only challenge the reader in the task of interpreting his complex works, but which also allow for the pleasure of carrying out this task. In its exploration of migrant subjectivities and their multiple and varied negotiations to create enabling spaces, this thesis shows how Gurnah’s fiction deploys various artistic strategies as possible ways of thinking about individual identity and social relations with others. In short, this thesis explores how Gurnah’s texts become discursive tools for understanding the complexity of migrancy and cultural exchanges along the Swahili coast, in Zanzibar, in the Indian Ocean, and in the UK. iii Stellenbosch University http://scholar.sun.ac.za OPSOMMING Hierdie tesis is ‘n studie van die geheelwerk van die Zanzibar-gebore skrywer Abdulrazak Gurnah, wie se fiksiewerk gewy is aan die tema van migrasie. Hoewel daar so ‘n deurlopende en kenmerkende tema in die geheelwerk is, ontwikkel die skrywer stilistiese vernuwing in elk van die individuele romans. Vanaf sy eerste roman tot en met sy agtste en mees onlangse, bied Gurnah se romans aan die leser nuwe insigte in die tema van verhuising, en die romans vra elkeen nuwe vrae oor wat dit beteken om ‘n migrant of vreemdeling te wees in onverwelkomende omgewings. Die romans wil ook vra wat die opsies is vir die individu om sulke omgewings meer verwelkomend te ervaar, of meer verwelkomend te maak. Wat Gurnah se werk so uitsonderlik maak en wat elke individuele roman ‘n kenmerkende estetiese eienskap gee, is sy vernuf en veelsydigheid as skrywer, en veral sy vermoë om sy verhale te historiseer. Hierdie historisering stel hom in staat om die beweegredes van sy karakters en hulle aksies (en dikwels ook gebrek aan aksies) te verken sowel as te bevraagteken.     Burgess.1-26 3/18/09 4:05 PM Page 1 introduction Cosmopolitanism and Its Discontents THE ZANZIBARI REVOLUTION OF January 1964 was the climax to years of growing racial, ethnic, and partisan tension in the islands and a violent rejection of Zanzibar’s cosmopolitan heritage. Probably one-third of all Arabs on Unguja Island were either killed or forced into immediate exile; for those Arabs and other minorities who remained, the next years witnessed the confisca- tion of most of their lands and urban properties, as well as their mass exclusion from government employment. A new African nationalist regime espoused socialism and, for two decades, found means by which to transform privileged minorities into second-class citizens. The revo- lution ended 150 years of Arab and South Asian economic and cultural hegemony in Zanzibar. Many hoped the revolution would heal or reduce communal tensions in island society, but any observer of Zanzibar’s contemporary politics can see that it did not. Three elections since 1995 have served, among other things, as popular referenda on the legitimacy and legacies of the revolution. One legacy is the political union of Zanzibar and Tanganyika and the creation of the United Republic of Tanzania in April 1964, barely three months after the revolution. Initially, the island government retained nearly all aspects of its national sovereignty, including control over its finances and armed forces. Starting in the mid-1970s, however, the mainland began to assert increasing control over island affairs, so that today, although Zanzibar retains its own presidency, cabinet, and parliament, the archipelago is utterly dependent on the mainland for its security, finances, and even its electricity.

    Elizabeth Brooks East African Culture and Society 15PANCO84 Essay #2 Tutor: Iain Walker April 16, 2008 Cultural Production and Diaspora: the novel as a vessel for a transnational voice Abdulrazak Gurnah’s remarkable novel, Desertion, paints an intricate portrait of life in a diasporic African community. His characters are unparalleled in their complexity and humanity. The details of time and place, and the historical context of the novel all combine to create a reading experience that seems to somehow illuminate Gurnah’s particular corner of the world. But, what makes Desertion a distinctly Zanzibari novel? What makes Gurnah a Zanzibari author? In order to read the novel from an anthropological perspective, we must first establish what it means to be Zanzibari, to be Swahili, from the corner of Africa that falls on the southernmost tip of the monsoon winds. If there exists some kind of a unifying principle that can be called culture, a way of seeing, perhaps, that is particular to a certain time and place, then we must identify it and search for it within the text of Desertion. The most immediately unifying principal in Swahili culture is a more nuanced one than an anthropologist would hope for. The culture is founded on multiculturalism. The East African coast is like an exotically spiced stew, stirred by the currents of trade, empire, and, lately, tourism. Swahili peoples have long been the subjects of an almost 1 absurd anthropological debate.1 People cannot seem to figure out who they are. While the term ostensibly refers to the coastal populations of Eastern Africa, modern migration has further muddled the ethnic makeup of the peoples of the coast.

Its aim is to place this ironic phenomenon in conversation with historiographical claims that porters were not slave labor as well as postulating that enslaved people were agents of their own social mobility and manumission.

    Literary Forum Gurnah Folktales Review Literary Forum By Fatma Alloo his year’s Literary Forum was a further manifestation of the fact that the Board of Directors of ZIFF is committed to the endeavour to further explore the concept of the dhow culture. Oral stories of the peoples must be documented so that our chil- Tdren can hear them for generations to come. They carry what we are made of and as we embed this culture we assert our identity as a people. These stories then could form part of visual stories that we see on the screen. Change in Africa through media portrayal of our own images form the basis of the literary forum in the long run in ZIFF’s quest to establish itself into a viable cultural arts institute on the island of Zanzibar. The fact that the renowned Zanzibar-born writers like Abdulrazak Gurnah honoured our call to be our special guest tells the story of commitment to the island’s literary world. It is telling those who set out to write that it is possible and doable. ZIFF tries to create an enabling environment as does the Zanzibar Gallery bookshop in making visible the products of this venture as we saw in this year’s ZIFF. The literary forum became a forum of debate in which writers were asked and explained why they write and for whom. Participants took a journey exploring their own analytical per- ception of where we are as a people and how we are perceived and depicted in the cultural and literary world as a continent.

Active 1987- in Tanzania; United Kingdom The work of remembering is central to Abdulrazak Gurnah’s literary art, much of which is based on a desire to recuperate the history/ies of the Swahili Coast, and, more specifically, of the people of his native Zanzibar. He draws on innovative ways of using memory as a tool for deconstructing historical narratives, enacting in his fiction the tension between the individual’s perception of history and that of the collectivity. He captures the sense of uprooting that exile etches on those people who are either compelled by circumstance or voluntarily choose to abandon their homelands. His work has no doubt been greatly inspired by his own experience as an African migrant in 1960s Britain, which filters in the loneliness his characters suffer from. Daud in Pilgrim’s Way (1988), the eponymous heroine of Dottie (1990), the narrator of Admiring Silence (1996), Saleh Omar and Latif Mahmud in By the Sea (2001) and Rashid in Desertion (2005) all have first-hand experience of both this sense of alienation and of the often thinly-veiled racism they have to confront. Abdulrazak Gurnah was born in Zanzibar, then a British colony, in 1948. After a traditional colonial education, he migrated to Britain three years after the 1964 revolution in September 1967. He studied at Christ Church College, Canterbury, whose degrees were then awarded by the University of London. He lectured at the Bayero University Kano in Nigeria from 1980 to 1982 and was appointed professor at the University of Kent in 2004, where he is still based.

    ‘That little space’: Locating Abdulrazak Gurnah in the Global Literary Marketplace Erik Falk, Nordic Africa Institute, Uppsala, Sweden Abstract The transformation of the publishing world in recent decades—which includes, among other things, the increasing significance of large retail outlets, the emergence and establishment of literary agents, and the merger of publishing houses into large media corporations—has been amply documented. Among the consequences for postcolonial literary fiction, and African English-language fiction, which is the subject here, are increasing use of the author as a public figure and marketing device, and heightened expectations on cultural representativity that link authors to particular places and cultures. With a focus on the initial and middle phases of his career, this article discusses the ways in which East African author Abdulrazak Gurnah has responded to such pressures in his novels and in essays and articles. It shows how both the form and the content of Gurnah’s writing exemplify a double effort to complicate ideas which frame authors and their texts through culture-specific identities and the seemingly opposite, generalizing notion of the postcolonial’ author which flattens history—a strategy of ‘self-authorization’ which can be seen as Gurnah’s critical resistance towards received categories used in both book marketing and postcolonial authorship. In a further twist, this resistance is in some tension with Gurnah’s choice to write in English and use an unmarked linguistic style and register since these seemingly align with marketing interests and enable easy translation which facilitates the global circulation of his books.
