History of Navratri UDAAN I SSUE -3 15/10/2012—26/10/2012 History of Navratri Legend says that when Mahishasura, the spiteful demon, who was a devotee of Lord Shiva, acquired unbeatable powers of eternity, he started taking away innocent lives. In order to stop him from taking over all the three lokas, Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Mahesh of the Hindu Trinity united their supreme powers and created a warrior goddess Durga who entered a war with Mahishasura. This war extended for nine days and on the tenth day she beheaded him. These nine nights signify the festival of Navratri. This week started with beginning of Navratari which is to be followed by different festivals like Dushera, Durga Pooja, Eid, Diwali etc. The Udaan-5 participants were in the mood of enjoying the day of the biggest festival in terms of duration i.e. Navratri. The Udaanities went to a Garba night to have a glimpse of this colorful festival which demonstrates the rich culture of the Gujarat. Accountancy Test First official test of Udaan-5 batch was of test of accountancy. Though the test was neither surprising nor shocking but it was head-shaking. The knowledge of right from the basic concepts of accountancy to preparation of financial statements with adjustment Interaction with trainee IRS Officers. DTRTI provided an opportunity to have a healthy interaction among Udaanites and newly recruited IRS Officers. As Income-Tax Department is team oriented, every task from top to bottom has to be performed in a team for successful accomplishment of the task, this interaction will provide fruitful result in form of team-spirit. Exploring Ahmedabad The entire batch of Udaan-5 was divided into two groups for exploring Ahmedabad. One group went to Science city via Sidi Saiyad Mosque whereas another group headed towards kankariya Lake. Use of public transportation was the essential rule of the game. The purpose of the exercise apart from exploring Ahmedabad was to have an idea of importance and potential implication of public transportation. Hyenas, Chital, Nilgai, Sambhar, Chinkara etc. The Asiatic Lions habitat is dry scrub land and open deciduous forest. These lions were once found across northern Africa, south west Asia and northern Greece. Now there are only around 411 left in the wild and all of them are in or around the Gir Forest National Park. Due to the efforts of Gujarat government & compliance by the people of Gujarat, today there are 411 lions instead of only 15 at the start of 19th century. The local Maldhari community has lived here for generations and coexists magnificently with the wilderness. They sustain themselves by grazing their livestock and harvesting what they need from the forest. The sizeable portion of their herds lost to lions and other predators is considered Prasad, offered in exchange for living in another's homeland. Many people come to Gir because, outside of Africa, it is the only place with wild lions. But to truly experience Gir and the lions, one must explore their natural habitat, with everything from tiny wild birds, not easily seen, but heard singing in the forest canopy, to crocodiles floating in the marsh waters. “The trouble with life is that you're half way through it before you realize it's a do it yourself thing.“ Exploring A’hmedabad– Kankaria Lake Udaanites were given a group task to explore A s h u t o s h Ahmedabad. Explorer Research Article [Modi et al. , 4(12): Dec., 2013] CODEN (USA): IJPLCP ISSN: 0976-7126 INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF PHARMACY & LIFE SCIENCES Ecological investigations of Shahwadi Wetland Nainesh R. Modi 1*, Nilesh R. Mulia 1 and Sumesh N. Dudani 2 1, Department of Botany, M. G. Science Institute, Ahmedabad, (Gujarat) - India 2, Deparment of Botany, Yuvaraja’s College, University of Mysore, Mysore - India Abstract The wetlands form important repositories of aquatic biodiversity. The diverse ecoclimatic regimes extant in the country resulted in a variety of wetland systems ranging from high altitude cold desert wetlands to hot and humid wetlands in coastal zones with its diverse flora and fauna. There are many important lakes and wetlands in Ahmedabad including Kankaria lake and Vastrapur Lake. The Nalsarovar wetland and Thol lake in the outskirts of Ahmedabad city are very important spots for migratory birds coming from different parts of the world and hence, attracts large number of tourists. However, many small and big wetlands are also present in and around the city which has not received due attention and hence, have suffered badly in the increased age of industrialization and urbanization. One such wetland is Shahwadi wetland which is situated in the heavily industrialized Narol area of Ahmedabad city. This study was undertaken to understand the ecological richness and importance of this region and highlight its degrading condition. It was found that this wetland harbors a good number of migratory birds and local birds, but is in highly degrading condition due to the negligence of local people residing in the periphery and the industries running nearby.

  • Coping with Injustice with Coping
Perspectives of victims of Hindu-Muslim violence in Gujarat, India GERBEN DE WITTE COPING WITH INJUSTICE Photo front page: Amit Dave / Reuters Perspectives of victims of Hindu-Muslim violence in Gujarat, India MSc thesis GERBEN DE WITTE October 2013 Registration number 880406-967-050 Study programme MSc International Development Studies Specialization Communication, Technology and Policy Chair group Knowledge, Technology and Innovation Thesis code TAD-80433 Supervisor dr. ir. Kees Jansen COPING WITH INJUSTICE Abstract This thesis presents the perspectives of riot victims on the justice process after the 2002 riots in Gujarat, a state in western India. These riots, organized by Hindu right-wing forces with complicity of the state government, were mainly one-sided attacks on Muslims. The justice process after the riots has been protracted: judicial systems have failed to bring justice, and Muslims have experienced increasing discrimination and segregation. This study – based on interviews and observations in Ahmedabad, Gujarat’s largest city – looks at the way Muslim riot victims deal with this situation of injustice, and what their perspective on the concept of justice is. Findings suggest that riot victims often associate the concept of justice with rectificatory justice. Although they are aware of other types of justice that might be relevant to them, they have only pursued justice through the judicial system. This has a lot to do with their limited ability to pursue justice, due to the circumstances they live in. Being dependent on the Hindu majority for their position in society, Muslims fear that pursuing justice might negatively affect their living situation. Additionally, they often experience other pressing issues that need their attention, and therefore pursuing justice is not their main priority.

Vidya (2019) Vol : 14(2) 1 Vidya (2019) Vol : 14(2) From the Editorial Desk Carried out with the help of GSLV Mk-III launch vehicle, Chandrayaan 2 was launched from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh. India will become the fourth country to land a spacecraft on the Moon. So far, all the landings have been in the areas close to the Moon’s equator. Chandrayaan-2 will make a landing at a site where no earlier mission has gone, i.e., near the South Pole of the Moon. It can contain clues to the fossil records of early Solar System. The primary objective of Chandrayaan-2 is to demonstrate the ability to soft-land on the lunar surface and operate a robotic rover on the surface. Scientific goals include studies of lunar topography, mineralogy, elemental abundance, the lunar exosphere, and signatures of hydroxyl and water ice. The unexplored territory gives an opportunity for the Mission to discover something new. The South Pole of the Moon holds possibility of presence of water. In addition, this area is also supposed to have ancient rocks and craters that can offer indications of history of the Moon. The launch vehicle will be carrying an orbiter, a rover named Pragyan and a lander named Vikram. And what makes this mission even more special is that the Project Director and Mission Director of the Rs 978 crore Chandrayaan-2 are both women scientists from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). Also, it is noteworthy that 30 percent of the team leading Chandrayaan-2 are all women.
