Conference for Undergraduate Research at FIU 2019 Full Program April 8, 2019 FIU Wellness & Recreation Center 10:00AM – 7:00PM Florida International University Modesto A. Maidique Campus 1 Welcome to the 2019 Conference for Undergraduate Research at FIU Undergraduate research is one of the pillars for student success. Every student should have an opportunity to engage in meaningful research during their time at FIU. The Conference for Undergraduate Research at FIU is a university-wide showcase open to FIU students from any major to show off their work. It is one of the largest multi-disciplinary conferences of its kind in the Southeast. This year, students will present over 200 posters and will share their work during this one-day event. Students from local high schools will also be attending the conference to see what our undergraduates are doing in labs, working groups, and in the field. The 2019 Conference for Undergraduate Research at FIU is organized by the Honors College on behalf of the university. Research is at the core of our mission. Almost every one of our students engage in significant research during their time at Honors, many through the Advanced Research and Creativity in Honors (ARCH) programs that helps students find research mentors at FIU. In addition to the conference, Honors sponsors the new undergraduate research hub, a searchable website where students can search for research opportunities at FIU and at institutions around the world. Special thanks to units and individuals who provided their support: Sabrina Rosell, SGA President; Regina Bailey, FIU Arts Senior Project Manager; Amy Reid, Program Coordinator for MARC U*STAR; Isabela Corzo, Program Coordinator for the McNair Scholars Program; Dr. Alla Mirzoyan, Program Director for the McNair Scholars Program and Andrea Green, Project Lead for FIU Department of Psychology. I would also like to thank Provost Kenneth Furton for his support for undergraduate research at FIU. • While Debbie Mucarsel-Powell Worked to Increase Access to Health
While Debbie Mucarsel-Powell worked to increase access to health care as associate dean at FIU, Curbelo has repeatedly voted to take healthcare away from over 100,000 people in South Florida. He voted to increase the cost of healthcare, allow insurance companies to charge an "age tax" on older Americans, and gut protections for people with pre-existing conditions. Mucarsel-Powell Worked At The College Of Health At FIU, Where She “Establish[ed] And Gr[e]w The Green Family Foundation NeighborhoodHELP Program. “Debbie has spent the last twenty-years dedicated to improving the lives of underserved communities in Miami-Dade, working for non-profit organizations such as the Hope Center, Zoo Miami Foundation, and the Coral Restoration Foundation, and since 2003 at the College of Health at Florida International University and, since its inception, the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine. Debbie has worked tirelessly to establish and grow the Green Family Foundation NeighborhoodHELP program at FIU and improve healthcare access for more Floridians.” [Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, campaign website, accessed 7/5/18] The NeighborhoodHELP Program Provides Health Care Access To Underserved Communities In Miami-Dade County. “The Green Family Foundation NeighborhoodHELP™ (Health Education Learning Program) is the cornerstone of the medical curriculum of the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine. A unique concept in medical education, the program sends student teams to visit patients in their homes in underserved communities of Miami-Dade County, preparing them to address the social determinants that affect health access and outcomes. Through these household visits, the program provides individuals and communities with a range of services including education, support, and primary health care provided through a Mobile Health Care Center, (a second mobile unit will soon go online), staffed by physicians and nurses from the College of Medicine, which makes weekly neighborhood visits.

Florida State University Florida State University has the top-ranked program out of all the PA schools in Florida. Its affordable tuition and high educational quality put it above the rest of the schools on this list. The PA program at FSU is relatively new, but it has already become well-respected in the field. Its Master of Science in Physician Assistant Practice takes students roughly 27 months to complete. Florida State University is known for having exceptional facilities, and its simulation lab allows students to practice their skills before they get real clinical experience. Tuition per year: $5,656 resident; $18,786 non-resident Graduation rate: 94% 2. University of Florida The University of Florida may have been narrowly edged out by its in-state rival, but it’s still one of the best PA schools in Florida. The program awards a Master’s Degree in Physician Assistant Studies. As with the other schools on this list, admission requires the completion of a bachelor’s and the completion of several STEM classes. Applicants with at least one year of relevant professional experience will have a better chance of getting in. This program takes two years to complete. The first year is focused on lectures and laboratory classes.
