Port Captain's Directory The United States Power Squadrons® PORT CAPTAIN’S DIRECTORY Local knowledge via radio, telephone, mail or the Internet SQUADRON ACTIVITIES COMMITTEE Dedicated to making boating safer and more fun This is the symbol of one of the largest groups of local boating knowledge volunteers that exists anywhere. This roster is filled with the names of USPS® PORT CAPTAIN volunteers, men and women who have local knowledge and are willing to share with fellow members. They are just a letter, ham radio contact, e-mail, phone call away. Contact them and you will be pleasantly surprised. If you see someone wearing the elite patch shown top center of this page they also will share their local knowledge with you. This roster is for the use of all our members, whether they are on their first cruise to unfamiliar waters, visiting new areas by land, or by other means of travel. Also, an amateur radio net listing of volunteers is also available at http://www.usps.org/national/Ham as a means of obtaining local information when needed. The Port Captains are listed in the roster under the states in which they have their local knowledge. This is usually, but not always, the state they reside in. The general areas of their knowledge is listed in underlined bold type. They are then listed geographically under these areas with their specific area noted. For squadrons or districts planning cruises to unfamiliar waters this knowledge can be very helpful in their planning. The format is designed to lead you to the areas you plan to cruise or visit. Please review your listing and submit any corrections or additions on the form contained in the guide section. If you are not listed and would like to join this group of volunteers all you have to do is complete and submit the same form. If you see areas that do not have coverage and know a USPS member that has local knowledge of that area encourage them to submit their name for listing in this roster. Please check the Port Captain Division of Squadron Activities website for possible updates. When Henry David Thoreau and his brother John put their dory into the Merrimack in September of 1839, they were paddling into a landscape that was shifting towards water-powered industries and mill cities. The legal transformation of water and the completion of the Great Stone Dam at Lawrence in 1847 spelled the end of the anadromous fish runs that had populated the Merrimack for centuries. Salmon restoration proceeded for three decades after the Civil War until fish passage failed.

Courtesy Alison Pouliot The Corangamite region is bound by the coast and the magnificent Otway ranges in the south, Corangamite giving way in the north to the rich agricultural land of the volcanic plains and the historic gold fields Region surrounding Ballarat in the Central Highlands. The region has a population of more than 370,000 and is home to Victoria’s second largest city, Geelong, as well as much of Ballarat, Colac, Camperdown, Torquay and numerous smaller towns. Four river basins form the region – the western section of Moorabool (basin 32), Barwon (basin 33), Corangamite (basin 34) and Otway (basin 35). Corangamite Region The basins are fed from the Otways, You Yangs and the Water Quality Great Dividing Range and include a range of major rivers and lakes, including the Heritage listed Aire River and Water quality was tested at 24 of the 138 reaches across internationally significant wetlands (Western District Lakes the Corangamite region.
