NEW ACTIVITIES & EXPERIENCES The tour through the village of Zermatt is under the theme: “A Tour with the Farmers from the Past”. During the guided tour in the old part of the village where centuries-old wooden houses, stalls and barns stand, it is possible to experience how the people lived and worked 100 years ago. You can see women weaving wool, braiding baskets or also men roofing the buildings with stone slabs. Those demonstrating these activities wear clothing in a style from that time. In an attractive and entertaining way your guide, Franz-Josef, tells you how the people lived in Zermatt then. Guided tours are in simultaneous German and English. 10 July to 28 August 2017 Details ____________________ HIKING TRAIL „EUROPAWEG“: NEW SUSPENSION BRIDGE From this summer on it will be possible to hike again on the trail „Europaweg“ between Grächen and Zermatt as a real altitude trail. For years a part of it was closed due to rock fall. The hikers had to make a detour of more than 500 metres of altitude into the valley and back. The new suspension bridge is now on a new spot. It is the longest alpine pedestrian suspension bridge of the world. Length: 494 m, 0,65 m wide, altitude on the highest point on the valley “Grabengufer”: 85 m. Opening in summer 2017. Details (only in German) ____________________ PHOTOS, JUST BEFORE THE FALL “My subject – my moment – my Matterhorn photo”. With this motto in mind, it is possible to take a photograph of yourself on Gornergrat this summer. Using a green screen, a picture is taken which creates the impression that someone is just jumping into the crystal-clear Riffelsee (2,575 m). This person is the subject posing in the Matterhorn PhotoShop at 3100 Kulmhotel on Gornergrat. And the result is a photograph which fits very well in a souvenir memories album of the most beautiful trips. First, we travel up to the viewing platform at Matterhorn glacier paradise (3,883 m) and then into the Glacier Palace, where a romantic and impressive ice world awaits your amazement 15 m below the surface. After the return to the valley there are cables and devices high up in the air which can be used to swing from tree to tree. Details ____________________ Seite 4 WATER SKIING AT SCHALISEE Water skiing in the mountains? Really? Of course! This is possible at Schalisee (1,428 m), the largest lake in the Nikolai Valley. There is an electric tow lift more than 100 m above the water that pulls wakeboarders and water skiers across the waves. Those who are talented can ski as many loops as they would like to extend the ride. There is also a little food stand offering snacks and drinks for the betterment and enjoyment of the water skiing fans and swimmers. Water skis, wakeboards, swimming aids and neoprene suits are included in the offer. Together, they present a one-day adventure with skiing on the glacier in the morning and water skiing on the lake in the afternoon – an irresistible adventure. Trip Factsheet: Monte Rosa Climber Zermatt Zermatt is a charming alpine village. It is car-free and reached only by a 15 minute train journey from the valley station of Tasch. As you would expect given its location it is one of Europe's main centres of Alpinism and is a bustling town in both winter and summer. The town is at 1,650m/5,420ft. Zermatt is in the German-speaking section of Switzerland. English (and French) are widely spoken. For further details on Zermatt click on the Zermatt Tourism website at www.zermatt.ch/en/ Monte Rosa (4,634m/15,203ft) Monte Rosa is the second highest mountain in the Alps and the highest mountain in Switzerland. The Monte Rosa is known in German as the Dufourspitze. It is in the Monte Rosa massif which is a range that lies on the border between Switzerland and Italy and is made up of several summits over 4500m, including Nordend, Zumsteinspitze, Signalkuppe and Ludwigshohe. Monte Rosa is located in the Pennine Alps (at 45°56′12.6″N, 7°52′01.4″E), 12kms east of Zermatt. It was first climbed in 1855. We usually ascend Monte Rosa over a 3 day period via the West ridge - the route is graded AD. The ascent begins from the Monte Rosa Hut which is accessed via the Gornergrat railway and a 2 hour trek. Summit day is a long, steady climb with 1800m of ascent to the highest point, called the Dufourspitze. There is a short grade 3 rock section and ice-slopes up to 40 degrees.

Project New Monte Rosa Hut, Switzerland name Keywords Alps, Architecture, Energy-self-sufficient, Off-Grid Start of 2005 project End of In operation project Contact ETH Zürich, Schweizer Alpen Club SAC person or organisat ion Short The New Monte Rosa Hut was built between snow, ice, glaciers project and mountains in the middle of the Swiss Alps. The hut serves as descripti a guesthouse for climbers, hikers and skiers. The project is a on / cooperation between the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology project ETH and the Swiss Alpine Club SAC. The hut was built as a test function object for sustainable construction in such extreme conditions. The aim was to demonstrate self-sufficiency and sustainability. Lastly, the hut features a unique architecture that makes it an unmistakable project in the Swiss Alps. Water Since there is no connection to a central water supply facility, service water has to be obtained from melting ice. For this purpose, a water cavern was installed 40 meters above the hut where during summer ice is melted to fill the cavern. The sanitary facilities were designed to operate with low water consumption. The wastewater can be stored in a waste water tank depending on the available energy for the purification process. The sewage is purified in a compact wastewater treatment plant, which consists of the mechanical pre-treatment, the aeration tank, the filtration chamber and the separate surplus sludge storage tank. The purified water is used for the toilet flushing and the washing machine. Energy One of the main objectives of the project was to build an energy- self-sufficient building.
