MMAANNAAGGEERR’’’SS NNOOTTEESS

The Lossiemouth performance was one nobody at the club saw coming. What were your thoughts on what was a very disappointing afternoon?

This performance was simply not acceptable for a club like us. The players knew that themselves and this was simply a day where no one turned up and we got what we deserved. It was not the scoreline which disappointed me the most as you will get days where things just come crashing down on you. We can not do anything about the score now so just accept it and move on, trying not to make those mistakes again. The thing that disappointed me the most was the fact that we did not show any fight, passion, desire, things which Broch teams have been known by in the past.

We simply did not turn up on the day and did not make Lossie work for their win. Overall I am very happy with the performance and result as Huntly has not been a good place to us over the years so I am delighted to come away The players responded with a fine 4-2 win at Huntly despite some with 3 points. baffling decisions by the match officials and a slow start to the game. How pleased were you with the evenings work? Today sees another tough match against an Inverurie Locos team that have had some fine results recently. What are your thoughts on I asked the guys to get back to basics and concentrate on getting that today's game? desire back and making sure we worked hard. You do not need any talent to be able to work hard. I have said before that I will not demand every You are correct. After a slow start to the season, Locos are starting to player plays brilliant every game as this is not possible. However, what I string together a few god results and no doubt will start to climb the do demand is that when the players go out on to the pitch, they give 100% league pretty quick. They are probably the only team in this league that I for the team and do not hold back. We started the game sloppy and struggle to guess their 11. Most teams have a strong core where 2 or 3 allowed Huntly to come at us. They got a soft penalty to say the least players change out at most. Locos have a lot of depth to their squad so I which they put away to go one up. From then on we took a firm grasp on am not sure who will play from the start. Whoever starts, we know we are the game. We scored our first after good link up play by Aidan who in for a very tough game. They have a vast amount of talent and in Neil crossed for Noble to tap in. We scored right before half time with a bit of McLean, I believe they have one of the best players in the league. Next to brilliance from Aidan who beat two defenders before placing it past their Darren Still he is probably the best that I have seen at driving forward goalkeeper. He is full of confidence at the moment and you can see that in from midfield and getting shots away or creating chances. There are of the way he is performing. He has come on leaps and bounds over the last course a lot of other players in their squad who we will have to be wary of 12 months and shows how good a player he is. They then somehow and if we do not turn up at 100% then we will struggle as Locos are a very managed to get a second penalty which no one in the ground knew what it good side indeed. was for. This was after we were denied what I thought was a stonewall penalty for hand ball. We kept going however and got the third through All the Best Marc Lawrence and then capped it off with a late goal through Dean after the best passage of football in the whole match. Mark

Since being elected to the Scottish Highland Football League Locos and the Broch have met on 43 occasions with the Harlaw Park side having the upper hand with 19 wins compared to 14 for the Bellslea men. When you break that down further into league matches Inverurie’s record is even more impressive with 14 wins from 30 matches and the Broch only victorious on 6 occasions. Both sides have their record victory over the other by 4-0, Fraserburgh twice, firstly in Locos first season in the Highland League at Harlaw Park (2002) and then again at Bellslea in 2008 whilst Inverurie did it in 2007 at home and then in 2010 at Fraserburgh.

The clubs have also met on thirteen occasions in cup ties with the Broch holding a slender lead 8 wins to 5. There have been two cup finals between the sides firstly the Highland League Cup Final in 2009 at , Keith which saw Locos take the spoils after extra time by 2-1 and then last season in the Aberdeenshire Cup at Christie Park, Huntly where the Broch recorded a comfortable 2-0 win. Michael Stephen is the only Fraserburgh player to have netted a hat-trick in the 3-3 draw at Bellslea in April 2004, I’m unsure if any Locos player has achieved the feat. MATCHHIGHLAND REPORT LEAGUE vs. LOSSIEMOUTH ROUND UP

th Press & Journal Scottish Highland Football League, Saturday 10 September 2016, Fraserburgh v Lossiemouth, Bellslea Park, Fraserburgh

Lossiemouth shocked Fraserburgh with a 4-0 thrashing at Bellslea Park which saw the Coasters leapfrog their opponents in the Highland

League. The home side fell behind early and then had Bryan Hay sent off for a last man challenge and they never really recovered conceding three further goals to suffer their first league defeat of the season.

Edward Flinn continued in goal for the home side in Paul Leask’s absence and Stuart Taylor replaced Marc Dickson at right back. There was also a recall for Russell McBride in place of Jamie Beagrie who was away on work commitments.

After a slow start to the game the Broch fell behind on 8 minutes when they lost possession in the midfield and Joao Rodrigues sent a through ball to Martin Charlesworth who ran in on goal but saw his shot well saved by Edward Flinn, however the rebound eventually fell to Scott Miller and he coolly sidefooted the ball into an empty net.

At the other end five minutes later and after a slick passing move Ryan Cowie crossed into the penalty area for Greg Buchan who saw his shot on the turn blocked. The ball came back out to Dean Cowie and he fed the ball back to brother Ryan who clipped the ball to Graham Johnston just outside the area but his shot went wide of the post.

On 23 minutes the Broch won a free kick after a foul on Greg Buchan by Chris Ross which saw the Lossiemouth defender cautioned. Ryan Cowie saw his effort blocked and the ball came back to Johnston and his chip to the back post was met by Willie West but he could only head straight at Darren McConnachie.

Disaster struck the home side 5 minutes later when a long ball over the top caught out the home defence and Bryan Hay making his 300th appearance for the club hauled down Charlesworth and was rightly sent off. On 30 minutes the visitors made it 2-0 when a cross into the Broch penalty box found it’s way to Ally Bellingham at the back post and he rifled a shot past Flinn into the net.

On 34 minutes the Broch were awarded a free kick after a foul on Aidan Combe which Dean Cowie floated into the box but West couldn’t connect properly with a header in front of goal. Lossiemouth almost snatched a third goal when a Bellingham cross from the left was met by Charle sworth who shot just wide of the goal.

Just before the break West and Buchan combined to set Ryan Cowie free on the left and his cross just evaded the onrushing Marc Lawrence at the back post. From the resultant corner McConnachie cleared from under his own crossbar.

The Broch came out for the second half with a bit more purpose and after a series of corners Dean Cowie teed up Lawrence inside the box but the young striker did make a good contact and his initial effort was blocked before McConnachie fell onto the loose ball. A long ball forward by Cameron Buchan to the edge of the Lossiemouth box found McBride who flicked it onto Combe and his cross found Johnston but he snatched at the ball an the chance went wide.

Lossie went 3-0 up on 65 minutes when Bellingham’s cross from the left was met by Charlesworth at the back post and he nodded home. Combe then had a chance for the Broch but he shot tamely at McConnachie after playing a 1-2 with Paul Campbell. In the last minute a breakaway by the visitors saw Miller fire past Flinn and West had one final chance for the Broch but he volleyed wide of the post.

MATCH REPORT vs. HUNTLY Press and Journal Scottish Highland Football League Match, Wednesday 14th September 2016, Huntly v Fraserburgh, Christie Park, Huntly

Fraserburgh came from behind to beat Huntly in a 4-2 victory at Christie Park despite having had two penalties awarded against them. Huntly made one change to the side which started at Banff on Saturday with Blair Johnston coming in for Cory Ritchie. Neale Allan and Jordan Morrice dropped out of the squad through injury as youngster Ben Leslie was added to the subs bench. The Broch made a number of changes to the side that lost 4-0 to Lossiemouth with Marc Dickson, Cameron Buchan, Michael Rae, Grant Noble & Paul Campbell all coming into the side to the expense of the suspended Bryan Hay, injured Ryan Cowie and Graham Johnston, Stuart Taylor & Greg Buchan all of whom dropped to the bench.

After two minutes of play, Dennis Wyness took an Alexander Thoirs pass on the run before firing wide of goal. Paul Napier then had a chance which was blocked for a corner that Thoirs met on the full from the edge of the penalty area but went just wide of goal. Marc Lawrence and Paul Campbell would be denied six minutes later as both were blocked from chances inside the Huntly box. Dean Cowie also had a chance which he fired over from 20 yards. On the quarter-hour mark, Wyness laid off to Glenn Murison who in turn played a ball in behind the Broch back four for Paul Napier but the former Buckie player was blocked by Paul Leask in the visiting goal.

The chances kept coming for Huntly and Blair Johnston’s cross from the right was met by Paul Napier who again saw his shot blocked and from the resultant corner Sean Webb saw his header saved by Paul Leask on the line. With 21 minutes played, Marc Lawrence was harshly adjudged to have fouled Paul Napier inside the box. Once Napier had received treatment, Robert Duncanson sent Paul Leask the wrong way for his third of the season. On 25 minutes Willie West found Cameron Buchan on the left and after a one-two with Lawrence his crossed into the Huntly box was just out of reach of the inrushing Campbell. The Broch levelled seven minutes later when Aidan Combe lifted a shot beyond Huntly goalkeeper Andrew Pennycook before Grant

Noble bundled in on the line unmarked.

A few minutes later a long ball forward by Leask was held up by Campbell and he released Combe who drove into the box but saw his cross blocked for a corner. Two minutes before the break Noble found Combe with a pass and the striker’s effort fell into the path of Campbell who saw his shot deflected wide. McBride then saw his effort from the corner drift over the bar. With just seconds of the half remaining, Huntly lost the ball in their own half and Paul Campbell released Aidan Combe who raced past two Huntly defenders to fire past Pennycook.

Two minutes after the restart, Fraserburgh had a claim of their own for a penalty but the appeals for a handball by Sean Webb were turned down by Will Smith after the defender stopped Combe’s cross with his hand. Alexander Thoirs had used his long throw on a number of occasions and when his delivery reached Webb inside the box he saw a header wide. Just after the hour mark, Paul Leask was caught off his line but he was able to redeem himself by getting back in time to divert a Duncanson shot away from goal.

The Broch were hunting a third goal and Cammy Buchan and Grant Noble combined to set up Lawrence who saw his shot saved. Dean Cowie then lobbed a free kick into the Huntly area which caused panic and after McBride teed up Noble the striker fired well over the bar. At the other end McBride allowed

Duncanson through on goal and Leask did well to thwart the Huntly player’s effort before McBride atoned by clearing the danger fully. Huntly were awarded their second penalty of the evening when Philip Duncan appeared to be pushed in the box. Marc Lawrence was cautioned by Referee Will Smith before Robert Duncanson netted his second spot kick of the evening hitting high into the net.

Five minutes later, a ball into the home goalmouth was flicked on by West behind Pennycook for Marc Lawrence to net from close range. Combe and Lawrence then combined to set up Campbell to curl the ball just wide. Johnston the saw one of his trademark free kicks rise just over the bar. Huntly could’ve been awarded a third penalty when Russell McBride appeared to have handled against Lewis Ingram inside the area. Huntly pushed bodies forward in the latter stages and Adam Naismith came close following a low drive after Thoirs’ long throw was not cleared. Campbell had another chance with four minutes left but his shot on the turn went wide, Fraserburgh wrapped up the scoring two minutes into stoppage time when Graham Johnston started a quick passing move which Dean Cowie finished off with a low shot after taking a return pass from Combe.
