Den Vite Generalen Den vite generalen Baptistpastorn Albert Wickmans kamp för fred The white general Baptistpastor Albert Wickmans struggle for peace Pascal Andréasson Magisteruppsats, 15 hp Institutionen för idé- och samhällsstudier Magisterkurs i idéhistoria, 30 hp Handledare: Christer Nordlund Vårterminen 2021 Abstract This thesis set out to analyse early baptistic peace-activities in Sweden in the 1900s, through a micro-historical analysis of Albert Wickman (1884-1942) who was a Swedish Baptist pastor and peace-agitator. In nonconformist-churches we find the earliest pacifists and Wickman started out as a theological trained Baptist, but he founded an independent organisation with ideas based on teachings by Leo Tolstoy. His Anti-war organisation was organised much like the Salvation Army and had as key-concept to gather members who claimed they would not kill another human being. Another idea was to create an army of volunteers who would be willing to put themselves between fighting nations. The organisation had many thousands member but existed only between 1912-1918 and it never practiced it go-in-between ideas. In the 1920s Wickman was involved with the oldest Swedish peace-society, “Svenska Freds och Skiljedomsföreningen”, and raised their membership from 4 000 in 1922 to 49 000 in 1930, but he also led this organisation to almost bankruptcy. This thesis gives an account of who Albert Wickman was and through him offers contexts and world-views on his pacifistic thinking in the first decades of the 1900s and how peace was promoted at the time in Sweden. Inledning 1.1 Introduktion och bakgrund Baptiströrelsen bröt mark 1848 som den första frikyrkan i Sverige. Baptisterna i internationell kontext fanns redan tidigare och amerikanska baptistsamfund sponsrade missionsverksamhet i Sverige på 1800-talet.1 Baptismen som helhet är en efterföljare till det som kallas den tredje reformationen och anabaptisterna. Luthers uppspikande av 95 teser på kyrkporten i Wittenberg 1517 innebar starten på reformationen som i verkligheten var flera reformationer. I januari 1525 samlades omkring femton män och kvinnor på kvällen hemma hos Felix Mantz, i Zürich till bön och samtal. De hade i flera år studerat och diskuterat reformationen och Bibeln. Denna kvällen begärde George Blaurock att Conrad Grebel skulle döpa honom med det ”rätta kristna dopet”, ett dop baserat på egen tro och bekännelse. Därefter döpte Blaurock de övriga 14 närvarande personerna. Karl Kilsmo skriver: ”Detta var den nutida frikyrkans födelsestund. Och det finns inte en enda frikyrka i hela världen, som icke vuxit ut från det träd som planterades i Zürich den 21 januari 1525.”2 Den tredje reformationens ivrare drev ett antal teser som var mycket kontroversiella, bland annat idén om ett medvetet dop som resultat av en medveten tro och egenvilja till bekännelse.3 Följden av detta var också idén om att kyrkan måste stå fri från staten. En annan övertygelse var att en kristen skulle avstå från att bruka vapen och därmed uppstod den moderna (även om det sker i den förmoderna eran) kristna pacifismen. Anabaptisterna sågs på med avsky av andra kyrkliga ledare i sin samtid och mötte omfattande förföljelse. De studeras än idag oftast genom lutherska eller katolska linser, vilket medför en skev förståelse av dem. Baptiströrelsen omfattar idag över 100 miljoner medlemmar vilket kan jämföras med den lutherska kyrkan som omfattar ca 80 miljoner.4 Lägger man därtill att de flesta pingstkyrkor i världen är baptistiska blir jämförelsetalet

    chapter 1 Introduction 1.1 Lewi Pethrus’ Importance in Swedish and International Pentecostalism The Swedish Pentecostal pioneer, Lewi Pethrus (1884–1974), did not introduce Pentecostalism to Europe – an honour often bestowed on the English Methodist immigrant to Norway, Thomas Ball Barratt (1862–1940). Pethrus did not even introduce Pentecostalism in his native Sweden – a task that befell a firsthand witness of the Azusa Street revival in Los Angeles, Andrew Johnson.1 Pethrus’ ascendency to the role as the undisputed figurehead of the Swedish Pentecostal Movement (spm), and a major player on the European and global Pentecostal scene, was a lot more incremental. The story of Pethrus’ rise from his lowly workingclass background to the position as pastor of the largest Free Church congregation in Europe will be told later; yet in order to understand the larger ramifications of his ecclesiology, which is the main focus of this book, it is important to first understand why he is important for Swedish and interna- tional Pentecostalism. For most of its history, the spm perceived itself as a spiritual fellowship of independent local churches without any organisations above or between the churches. The reality, on the other hand, pointed to the fact that it was a tight- knit network with one predominant church, the Filadelfia Church of Stockholm, and its pastor, Lewi Pethrus, as the dominant figures in the centre. Filadelfia functioned, in all practical purposes, as the denominational headquarter only without the official title attached to it. Nearly all joint ventures originated or were controlled by Pethrus and Filadelfia. Some of the most prominent ones were the hymnal Segertoner, the Bible school Kaggeholm, the publications Dagen and Evangelii Härold, and the radio station, ibra radio.

The paper also explores three subordinate questions. What kind of leadership in the Lutheran faith and in the Pentecostal Faith there has been; How the societal, cultural, political, economic context affect church leadership; and Leadership in the church of Sweden and in Pentecostal Faith today and tomorrow. To find the results of the research paper, I used only qualitative research method through hermeneutics. The results of this paper show that church leadership cannot adopt NPM because churchly leadership is totally different than production, effectiveness, optimization. Church leadership is a servant leadership where love and compassion are the foundation of church leadership. A good leadership is when there is a good relationship between leader-followers because they both are the two sides of the same coin. The research paper analyzes two church leaders to identify church leadership, Lewi Pethrus and Erling Eidem. Church leadership has been discriminated, marginalized by the societal, cultural, political, economic context where rationalism, individualism, secularism, globalization, technology, and mass consumption affected individuals to attend church and have religious experiences.The paper recommends that NPM is not a good option to perform spiritual leadership nowadays because these religious organization will be seen like any other earthly organization.

    122 Australian Pentecostal Studies 19 (2017) Tommy H. Davidsson, Lewi Pethrus’ Ecclesiological Thought 1911-1974: A Transdenominational Pentecostal Ecclesiology. Brill: Leiden; Boston, 2015. X + 277pp. Reviewed by Shane Clifton.2 There is an emerging literature on Pentecostal ecclesiology and some disagreement as to how that ecclesiology should be done. It is still the case that idealised biblical and theological ecclesiologies predominate, but Davidsson’s work is a superb example of a concrete method that takes history and social context seriously.3 From this perspective, ecclesiology begins from below, describing and analysing what the church actually is and how it understands itself, before attending to what it is supposed to be (p.11). For those interested in doing Pentecostal (or any) ecclesiology, Davidsson’s final chapter includes an insightful evaluation of alternative methods used by seminal Pentecostal scholars, and whether or not one agrees with his conclusions (and I generally do), his argument deserves to be taken seriously. The concrete ecclesiology that is the focus of Davidsson’s analysis is that of Lewi Pethrus (1884-1974). A Swedish pastor ordained as a Baptist minister, Pethrus experienced the Pentecostal revivals that swept the world at the turn of the 20th century and was Baptised in the Spirit in 2007. Pethrus remained within the Baptist Union until 1913, when he and the church he led were excommunicated over concerns about Pentecostal theology and practices (Spirit baptism and an “open” interpretation of communion (p.63)). Thereafter, the Filadelphia Church of Stockholm grew to become one of the largest Pentecostal assemblies in Europe, and Pethrus the de facto leader of the Swedish Pentecostal Movement (SPM).

Lewi Pethrus as the unofficial leader of the Swedish Pentecostal movement (Pingströrelsen) and Ulf Ekman as the leader and founder of the Word of Life (Livets Ord). In the search for comparative studies between Pethrus and Ekman I didn’t find much studies done, therefore I see this as an attempt to contribute to fill up the knowledge gap. Both Pethrus and Ekman were successful in their charismatic leadership. The main question is if their success was built on the same components to create a charismatic unity in their leadership? The purpose with this study is to examine the similarities and differences in Pethrus and Ekman’s religious charismatic leadership, and to increase knowledge in comparative studies between Pethrus and Ekman for future studies on this subject. The main reasons to choosing Pethrus and Ekman is that both were/are well known public figures in Sweden outside their movements and that their charismatic leadership happened on different sides of the 20th century. Pethrus in the beginning of the century, Ekman in the end of the century. Both Pethrus and Ekman’s leadership was built on a strong inner vocation from God to be leaders. Both entrepreneurs built strong institutions, even though the vocation to preach the Word of God was the primary.

Paper presented by Jean-Daniel Plüss, PhD, during the sessions of the World Alliance for Pentecostal Theological Education at 23rd the Pentecostal World Conference in Kuala Lumpur August 26-30, 2013 Introduction From its inception, many leaders in the Pentecostal movement have repeatedly stated a desire to unite in the name of Christ, through the power of the Spirit and to the glory of God. After all, being in “one accord” was the hallmark of the Early Church. Like a literary inclusion, being in one accord is mentioned at the beginning and at the end of the second chapter of Acts, an account of the quintessential Pentecostal church. Nineteen centuries later and after the Reformation was largely responsible for bringing about a fragmentation of the Christian witness into many denominations, early Pentecostal leaders felt that the Holy Spirit would bring about a fresh unity so that the Good News could be preached in all parts of the world before the second coming of Christ would take place. The main reason was to present a credible witness to the Gospel “in these last days” and the desire to allow the Holy Spirit to blow wherever God wished. Another reason for achieving unity was to enable cooperation across denominational lines. The task at hand was huge and cooperation was of the essence. A third reason for the quest towards unity was the often overlooked fact that the early Pentecostal leaders had a common experience in the Spirit, but at the same time they came from a variety of ecclesial traditions and cherished a different theological convictions.

    LEWI PETHRUS: HIS INFLUENCE UPON SCANDINAVIAN-AMERICAN PENTECOSTALISM by Joseph R. Colletti Lewi Pethrus (1884-1974) represents an influence that has directly rooted Scandinavian Pentecostal church polity into the Scandinavian- American Pentecostal movement. The son of devout Swedish Baptist parents, he was converted, immersed in baptismal waters, and became a church member of a Baptist congregation in Vastergotland, Sweden, by the age of fifteen. In 1907 he received the baptism of the Holy Spirit while attending a meeting of Thomas B. Barratt, who first brought the Pentecostal message to Scandinavia, in Oslo, Norway.l After attending Bethel Seminary in Stockholm, Sweden, he became the pastor of a Joseph R. Colletti (M.A., Theology, Fuller Theological Seminary), has done further graduate work at U.C.L.A. Lewi Pethrus, A Spiritual Memoir, (Plainfield, New Jersey: Logos International, 1973), p. 25. - 18- small Baptist church in Lidkoping, Sweden, and later the Filadelphia Church in Stockholm in 1911. In 1913, Pethrus and the Filadelphia Church were excommunicated by the Conference of Swedish Baptist Churches for allowing Christians who were not members of a Baptist church to participate in the Lord's Supper. According to Thomas B. Barratt, behind the conference's action was "a definite feeling of ill-will towards Pethrus' Pentecostal feelings."i The action taken by the Baptist conference proved to be a great mistake. Many other Baptist congregations, who also had "Pentecostal feelings," immediately protested against the conference's action. They believed that it was unbiblical for the conference to infringe upon the freedom and liberty of a local church.

Barratt’s meetings in Oslo and travels there. Is confronted with Barratt’s three questions: ‘Do you want to become anything for Jesus? Do you want to do anything for Jesus? Do you want to go anywhere for Jesus?’ and answers ‘yes’ to these. Receives knowledge of the teaching of Spirit baptism. This Pethrus came to regard as his entrance into the Pentecostal movement. 1910 Is called to become pastor of the newly formed Stockholm’s seventh Baptist church, Filadelfia.
