Despite the increasing level of fieldwork and excavation across the region, there has been comparatively little synthesis, and the discourse remains tied to historical sources dominated by the Victoria County History series, the Agrarian History of England and Wales volumes, and more recently by the Historic County Atlases (see below). Nonetheless, the Thames Valley has a rich and distinctive regional character that developed tremendously from 1500 onwards. This chapter delves into these past 500 years to review the evidence for settlement and farming. It focusses on how the dominant medieval pattern of villages and open-field agriculture continued initially from the medieval period, through the dramatic changes brought about by Parliamentary enclosure and the Agricultural Revolution, and into the 20th century which witnessed new pressures from expanding urban centres, infrastructure and technology. Introduction 1.1 Oxford is an international city, which is successful, vibrant, and a national economic asset. It is at the centre of the world-class knowledge economy of Oxford and Oxfordshire, with one of the most important concentrations of high-value businesses in Europe. However, a severe lack of housing availability, choice and affordability is creating a deepening housing crisis in Oxford, which is significantly undermining its future. 1.2 Oxford has overtaken London as the least affordable city to live in across the UK. Oxford average house prices are over 11 times the gross annual earnings in the City.1 This means there is already severe pressures on the City’s housing stock. 6.2% of households in Oxford are classed as overcrowded, compared with an Oxfordshire average of 3.3%2. The affordability crisis has meant that more households in Oxford now rent their homes rather than own them. Oxford has been identified as the most unaffordable location outside of London for private renting: median rents for two bedroom homes account for 55% of local median full-time earnings.3 1.3 Oxford’s population is growing and increased by 10% over the last decade.

The 'Golden Age' of Oxfordshire Archaeology, 1965–1980
The ‘Golden Age’ of Oxfordshire Archaeology, 1965–1980 James Bond and Trevor Rowley SUMMARY This article reflects upon on some aspects of the spectacular growth of archaeological activity which began in Oxfordshire during the late 1960s. This expansion was a response to the realisation that the survival of local archaeological sites was coming under threat on an unprecedented scale from motorway construction, urban redevelopment, suburban expansion, gravel extraction and intensive agriculture. Much was achieved through major organisational changes, initiated in what was then the Oxford City and County Museum and Oxford University’s Delegacy for Extra-Mural Studies. Major developments included both the training and mobilisation of a considerable volunteer force from the general public, and the creation of the Oxfordshire Archaeological Unit as a professional excavation team. In Oxfordshire as elsewhere, expansion was accompanied by important advances in the nature of archaeology itself, in particular its integration alongside other disciplines into landscape studies. The untimely death of Mick Aston in June 2013 robbed the archaeological community of one of its most colourful and influential characters.1 Mick spent the greater part of his working life in the West Country, but like the present authors he first learned his trade in Birmingham and the West Midlands. All three of us subsequently worked in Oxfordshire, Trevor Rowley from 1969 to the present, Mick Aston from 1970 to 1974, James Bond from 1974 to 1986. The late 1960s saw the dawn of a spectacular expansion of archaeological activity in the county, a time of great enthusiasm and strong commitment which some recent commentators have recalled fondly as the ‘golden age of Oxfordshire archaeology’.
