President’s Report

While 2016 wasn’t without its challenges, Hockey WA continued to take positive steps forward delivering against the pillars of our strategic plan while focusing on our core values. While I often talk about the pillars of our strategic plan, I would like to focus on the core values which were updated with our revised strategic plan in 2015. The core values outline the en- gagement and relationship Hockey WA seeks to have with all our stakeholders and, while we may not always achieve these, they certainly are the standard we are aiming for. As a reminder, the Hockey WA core values are:

• INCLUSIVE PARTICIPATION for all people of all abilities, gender, race and age group to achieve their full potential • TRANSPARENT and regular engagement to encourage dialogue and CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT • To work together to ensure ENJOYMENT for all • Open to INNOVATION and striving for EXCELLENCE in all that we undertake.

Inclusive Participation

While many alternative sports are commencing the journey towards a broader and more inclusive participation model, hockey can boast a long and proud history of engagement par- ticularly across gender and age. In 2016 Hockey WA continued to grow our broad participation base providing: • Increased levels of direct engagement, in partnership with local clubs and regional associations, in schools based introduction programs; • Expansion of clinics and camps providing additional active participation opportunities for young members of our community; and • Expansion of our HEAT and TAP programs which provide developing athletes with the opportunity to develop their skills and experience base with some of the best our game has to offer.

While the focus has been on investing in the growth and expansion of our younger members, Hockey WA has continued to work with and -ex pand our Masters competitions and community which provide one of the best competitions for our more mature members that any sport can offer.

Transparent and Regular Engagement

In 2015 Hockey WA created a Communications and Marketing Committee which has focused on improving the quality of our engagement with all our hockey community stakeholders. We have seen a significant improvement in the measurable engagement through this program which creates a more in a more informed and engaged community. Hockey WA will continue to innovate and invest in this area to provide further opportunities for engagement and exposure including areas such as live streaming of National and International engagements which can open up our competitions and our game to the wider sporting community.

Innovation and Excellence

In 2016 Hockey WA tendered for and won the right to host the (AHL), in partnership with Hockey Australia, from 2016 to 2018. Through this process Hockey WA has been focused on reinvigorating our National Championships with changes implemented in 2016 including: • Combining the Men’s and Women’s Championships to a single venue in parallel to the National Under 13 Championships; • Introducing international teams into the AHL bringing varied game styles for our supporters and new challenges for our players and officials; and • Provide online streaming and improved fixturing to increase the opportunity for supporter engagement along with expanding the commercial opportunities for the sport.

The WA hosted 2016 AHL was well received by Hockey Australia and provided an excellent baseline for an expanded 2017 competition with in- creased commercial opportunities. Hockey WA and Hockey Australia are now focused on further innovating the 2017 AHL to provide a greater value for our sport, the wider hockey community and the wider sporting community.

Through 2016, Hockey WA continued to deliver against the six pillars of our strategic plan with some key highlights including:

• VALUE: Hockey WA delivered an improved financial outcome in 2016 against 2015 with a small profit and significant cash positive result. These financial results allow Hockey WA to ensure the sustainability of our association while supporting the growth and expansion of our delivery; • ORGANISATION: Hockey WA continued to improve our stakeholder engagement with our key funding and sporting partners. In addi- tion, the Board of Hockey WA has undertaken a Board Governance review which has resulted in several governance policies and practices; • PARTICIPATION: In 2016 Hockey WA continued to expand our participation and engagement programs which are envied by other

States and are setting the pathway for the growth and retention of our participation levels; • HIGH PERFORMANCE: Hockey WA’s elite level teams had another outstanding year with consistent improvement across all our teams. The WA Thundersticks made the AHL final for the third consecutive year, unfortunately falling short of championship gold, while the WA Dia- monds continued to develop with some strong performances although they were unfortunately undone by some inconsistent results; • FACILITIES: The shortfall in Perth turf facilities continues to be a limiting factor on our sport, however 2016 provided some further relief with the Guildford turf opening and the Whitfords turf in track to open in the coming weeks. In addition, Hockey WA in partnership with local clubs, councils and State and federal government assisted to secure significant funding to develop playing facilities in Cockburn and Gosnells expanding the available facilities for our members in locations where there are high levels of participation growth opportunities exist. • PROFILE: The delivery of an innovative Australian Hockey League in 2016 has set the platform for further profile expansion of our sport in WA along with active participation in our wider international region.

In closing, I would like to thank the significant sponsors, officials, volunteers, supporter and participants who tirelessly support our sport. I would also like to thank the Board of Hockey WA and in particular several retiring Board members for their significant contribution to our sport: • Mr Mark Kerrigan, who resigned from the Board in late 2016, was critical in developing the marketing and communications board sub-committee; • Mr Pat Hall, who resigned in 2017, was a long serving member of the Board and former Vice President who accepted a role on the Hockey Australia Board; and • Mrs Janene Bon, who will be standing down after the 2017 AGM, has been a long standing member of the Hockey WA Board and most recently has played a pivotal role in revising the Hockey WA constitution which will be put to our members for adoption in 2017.

I would also like to thank Peter Churack and his team for their continued passion, significant contribution and commitment to our sport. The 2016 year has seen Hockey WA deliver off a strong platform which was implemented in the preceding years and now provides a baseline for our organisation to grow and develop.

I thank you all for your support and engagement over the last 12 months and encourage everyone to continue to support the exciting future direction of our sport in WA.

Phil Nillsen President - Hockey WA

Chief Executive Officer’s report While in last year’s report I described 2015 as a watershed, 2016 was the consolidation of a number of those initiatives resulting in many successes, some failures and as always learnings as how to improve.

The third year of the TAP and HEAT development programs again highlighted how successful these programs are in athlete development, with our U18 Men’s team retaining Gold while our U18 Women continued their improvement by finishing 3rd. In fact, all our elite state teams performed admirably with the Diamonds side (the youngest at the Australian Hockey League) being the only team to finish outside of the finals. However, while these programs have been held as a benchmark and are pro- grams which other states are attempting to emulate, community feedback has lead us to review the programs due to their impact upon some clubs and summer sports, and revised programs for 2017/18 will be announced in July of 2017.

Our junior engagement programs which include the Hookedin2Hockey, Sporting Schools and the U13 & U15 programs have also been very successful in providing close to 17,000 in school or in clinic experiences across the state. A pleasing aspect of both our High Performance and Participation initiatives has been the engagement of our regions. Hockey WA staged a development “road show” in conjunction with the Lower Great Southern Hockey Association which involved over 750 children in the Albany and Mt Barker region. Additionally, a regional High Perfor- mance camp conducted at Narrogin was well received and uncovered a number of talented athletes that have now been exposed to and then succeeded in achieving State Team selection.

The 2016 winter competition was well run with more than a few long-term observers of the game commenting on how smooth and incident free the 2016 season was. In addition to the traditional winter hockey season, the Pre-season Cup and Preseason Challenge competitions were also staged. Both ran successfully and achieved their aim of providing warm-up matches prior to the start of the winter season. These competi- tions also provided “warm-ups” for our umpiring and officiating personnel prior to the main event. While on umpiring, mention needs to be made of the Officiating Advisory Group which provided significant assistance in the allocation, evaluation and development of umpires and officials over the course of the year, and their efforts to enhance the game.

Our Masters community continues to grow and it was pleasing this year that the Wednesday Hockey Masters fraternity provided a level of monetary support enabling a number of junior regional athletes to attend and participate in our development programs. Our State Team per- formances at National Championships for both men and women can best be described as dominate.

The development of artificial turf facilities has accelerated in 2016 with the addition of the Guildford Grammar facility and the recently completed artificial turf and club room facilities at Warwick, the new home of Whitfords City Hockey Club. The construction of the Sutherland Park turf development home of the Southern River Hockey Club is due to commence by July 2017 and will mean that by the start of the 2018 season, an additional four metropolitan turf facilities will have been completed and will be available for use in the 2018 season representing an increase of nearly 45% over the 2015 figure.

Regionally, the completion of the Mt Barker turf in the Lower Great Southern region and the turf development in Bruce Rock - due for comple- tion in August 2017 - increases the availability of turf and provides better facilities in our regional areas, ensuring that the strong hockey tradi- tion in the country continues.

At Perth Hockey Stadium, the replacement of the lighting on Field 2 has not only improved the lux levels to a standard that will support TV coverage but it will also produce electricity and maintenance savings in the longer term. These upgrades were made possible by the continued support of the Department of Sport and Recreation (DSR) who, in challenging financial times, have been strong supporters of Hockey WA. DSR also provided support to enable Hockey WA to bid and be successful in staging of the Australian Hockey Leagues (AHL) in 2016. With this support Hockey WA was able to stage for the first time a combined Men’s and Women’s AHL which incorporated six international teams and the U13 Boys’ and Girls’ Championships over the September/ October school holidays. While this was a massive undertaking, Hockey WA was able to stage what has been widely described as the best AHL ever and has led to the opportunity for the State to stage the event in 2017 with a possible extension to 2018.

Finally, while dramatically increasing its spend in the development and delivery of these new initiatives, Hockey WA has, through prudent control of expenditure and the maximising of the hospitality revenue, been able to achieve a surplus and keep any increases in club affiliation fees to or below CPI. These achievements are the result of the diligent work of a committed management team and staff at Hockey WA, the guidance and support of the Board of Hockey WA, our sponsors and the support of the hockey community of Western Australia. To all, I express my appreciation and look forward to 2017.

FACILITIES & INFRASTRUCTURE 2016 was a busy year at the Perth Hockey Stadium (PHS). We hosted several events throughout the year, with the highlight definitely being the successful staging of the Australian Hockey League Men’s and Women’s competitions. For the first time in history the men and women com- peted at the same venue. This 10 day event showcased the best of Australian hockey and we saw more than 12,000 people though the gates. We look forward to the 2017 event which is scheduled to.take place between September 28 and October 8.

In June, PHS welcomed the CBH Country Men’s and Women’s Championships to PHS. These championships are always well supported by our country associations and offer a fantastic opportunity for regional players to compete.

The first stage of the Curtin Master Plan is now almost complete with the new access road and parking lot in use. The construction process was not without its fair share of challenges and we appreciate the patience showed by the patrons and players using PHS.

October 2016

A lack of turf facilities remains an ongoing challenge for the sport and is still an area of focus for Hockey WA. PHS and other turf venues in the Perth Metro are currently running at full capacity for training and games during the season. Hockey WA, with City of Gosnells and the City of Cockburn, made a bid for federal funding to build three additional pitches in the metro area. Unfortunately, the combined bid was unsuccess- ful, but the City of Gosnells did receive the funding through an election promise to build a new turf at Sutherlands Park for the Southern River Hockey Club. The project completion date will be early 2018.

In May, Guildford Grammar School’s new world-class synthetic hockey turf was unveiled. The new facility features a LED lighting system (the first in Australia for Hockey) and the same surface as the one used at the Rio Olympics.

The Warrick Hockey Facility (Whitfords Hockey Club - pictured right) will be ready early in 2017. This will give players in the northern corridor more opportunities to train and play on turf.

Progress of Warrick The challenge always facing us is to balance the necessary Hockey Facility - improvements, replacements and general upgrades to Photo courtesy of the maintain a world class facility at PHS and to do this within City of Joondalup budgetary parameters. With the ongoing support of the Department of Sport and Recreation (DSR), we have man- aged to continue with the long term maintenance plan for PHS. To mitigate our ongoing issues with the roof, we have received the funding from DSR to replace the tiled roof at PHS with a Colourbond roof. We hope to have the works completed by the start of the regular season.

DSR finalised the business case for the Perth Hockey Stadium with a specific focus of the Curtin University lease and the location agreement with the Hockey Aus- tralia High Performance Programmes. The business case included a third pitch at PHS and several improvements to the building.

Thanks must go to our volunteers and staff who dedi- cated many hours over the past season to ensure that Perth Hockey Stadium continued to offer a high quality and enjoyable experience for the West Australian Hockey community and continues to be regarded as the number one Hockey facility in Australia.

Participation

During 2016 Hockey WA (HWA) continued its focus on schools, working in our Eastern corridor with structured MOU’s. In 2017 HWA will move to support the Northern corridor in the same vein. Our Sporting School program numbers also increased significantly this calendar year and we delivered more than 4,000 experiences around the State through this Federal Government supported initiative.

In 2016 HWA attended both Primary and Secondary ACHPER (Australian Council for Health, Physical Education and Recreation) conferences with a focus on training primary and secondary sports teachers from around the state to deliver in-school programs. In 2016 we established a new relationship with Murdoch University’s Education department, and through our ‘Coach Developer’ program, worked to create a program to benefit and share best practice between education students and our aspirant coaches.

In June HWA hosted an Olympic Day, the official Western Australian Olympic event. With a multi-sport approach we welcomed 350 primary aged children for a day of Olympic inspired games and events. Across the year we have delivered 21 days of participation based clinics with more than 632 participants and specific skill based programs for Goalkeepers of all ages, exposing 132 goalkeepers to skill specific training.

2016 also saw us roll out the U15 pathway program. This final phase sees the successful completion of the first year of both the U13 and U15 pathway programs. With more than 750 children involved, these retention based programs are increasing in popularity. Enrolments for the 2016-17 U13 program are 10% up on last year. For the 2016- 2017 U13 and U15 pathways we have also increased the number of places for regional based athletes, committing to an investment of more than $20,000 for their subsidised attendance.

Regionally, we have increased our focus on properly registering Hookin2Hockey centers and we will carry this focus into 2017 as we look to work towards formalizing the program. HWA will also work to establish three new Hookin2Hockey centers in the Pilbara in 2017.

With close to 17,000 in-school and in-clinic experiences for children across our regional areas, our Regional Associations with the support of Regional Healthway funding, continue to deliver a strong ‘Smarter than Smoking’ message to the whole State.

In February we trialled a roadshow model in Albany, Mt Barker and Gnowangerup. Across the four days we covered 11 schools and exposed 756 children to HWA run clinics. Additionally, we offered more than 12 hours of development and extension clinics in two of the locations. This trial demonstrated the importance of suiting the delivery to the context and we look forward to working with our regional associations in 2017 to consider additional context based delivery options.

With Hockey Australia, the Department of Sport and Recreation and the Australian Sports Commission’s support, HWA rolled out the Coach Developer program and Aspirant Coach Program. At this stage we have 20 coach developers from a wide range of clubs and associations help- ing to create this exciting model.

Our strategic intent for 2017 is to embed these programs to ensure their sustainability and to look to a comprehensive and shared approach to the delivery of the sub-ages programs.

COMPETITIONS & EVENTS

The Competition & Events (C&E) department were well placed with the success of the 2015 season to build, enhance, grow and take on the many challenges that 2016 would present.

The C&E department had a very busy start to the year hosting three International Events; Australia v Great Britain (Women), Australian v Great Britain (Men) and Australia v China (Women) at Perth Hockey Stadium. These events were professionally run and provided great training op- portunities and preparation for our national and international identified umpires and officials.

Season 2016

The 2016 season commenced on Saturday, 2 April, and our Grand Final Gala Day held on Saturday, 24 September. Across the senior competi- tion there was a total of 407 teams (senior and master). The draft draw for the Premier One and Promotion One competitions was released in late 2015, allowing our clubs the opportunity to review the scheduling and collaborate on individual club and facility initiatives to best support a successful season delivery at both a strategic and operational level.

Our junior competition continues to develop, with a total of 355 teams split over 50 grades. As ever, the success on the field is measured not only by results but also by increased levels of engagement and participation. The administration of junior teams rests on a collective effort of junior coordinators, coaches, parents, families and volunteers. To that end, I would like to acknowledge the ever changing landscape of junior sport, increasing time commitment and multitude of tasks required to allow our junior players the very best of opportunities to excel.

The season would not have functioned without the enormous support of volunteers across the entire community. I would personally, like to thank the numerous volunteers, club officials and advisory group members for their contribution to the operations of Hockey WA and their clubs, but also for their understanding and cooperation to ensure their clubs are effectively represented.

Match recording

SportsTG continued to provide Hockey WA with the online system for clubs to record match results across all competitions.

It was decided that AltiusRT would be piloted during the Melville Toyota League finals series, a cloud based platform with the ability to capture results as they happen and showcase real time online statistics. The simplicity of this system will allow clubs to reduce the administration com- mitment by allowing starting lineups to be entered online, view results, ladder standings and player statistical data.

In 2017 this will roll out to the entire Premier One competition, inclusive of hardware to assist with timely entry. This will allow Hockey WA to build historical statistical data on our players and teams and promote the Premier League brand to the greater hockey community. This is an exciting new initiative which we are looking forward to implementing in 2017.

Indoor Competitions

In consultation with the Indoor Advisory Group (IAG), the indoor season was approached with new energy. The Indoor Club Championships saw a total of 22 teams participate over a three-day format.

Indoor Club Champions:

Under 15 Boys: Suburban Lions Under 15 Girls: University of WA Under 18 Boys: Melville

The Indoor League season is currently underway, with a healthy 27 senior teams and 24 junior teams.

Smarter Than Smoking Junior WA Club Championships

These are multi-grade, all-inclusive participation based series of events capturing children aged 10-18 years from regional locations throughout Western Australia and the Perth Metropolitan area. 2016 saw 106 representative teams (Boys & Girls), stretched as far North as Geraldton and South in Esperance. These events, consist of J7/8, J9/10 and J11/12 age groups and divisions and were successfully hosted between the Perth Hockey Stadium and Aquinas College.

The Women’s tournament played through three days of competition was this year shared between Perth Hockey Stadium and the immaculate home grounds of Victoria Park Xavier Hockey Club. Under advice from the Women’s Country delegates, securing a quality grass facility remains high on the ability to deliver a successful tournament.

The success of this event on every level, the grounds and facilities, the catering and hospitality, is a true reflection of the generosity of Victoria Park’s volunteer base its commitment to grass roots hockey.

Umpires & Officials

During 2016, Hockey WA facilitated a number of new development plans and strategic initiatives with the assistance of the Officiating Advisory Group (OAG) for its myriad of tiers from junior to senior umpires. Umpiring in particular has been a focus of HWA where seamless transparent allocations, education and pathway and opportunity have been identified as important areas for improvement and immediate attention. HWA continues to maintain its outstanding presence and effective contribution to the number of umpires and officials appointed to national and international tournaments.

Hockey WA continues to commit to work with our clubs to ensure that our competition remains at its highest competitive level, and work to strengthen Hockey WA’s involvement in delivering events at state, national and international level, to reinforce our event brand and ensure our customer loyalty remains of great significance.

OFFICIATING ADVISORY GROUP

2016 heralded the second year of operation of the Officiating Advisory Group (OAG) and brought with it some new members. The group welcomed Frank Brown, Shane Knapp and Tom Daniels to the team who determined that our goal for 2016 was to focus on officiating develop- ment and streamlined allocations.

As is always the case, assisting Hockey WA in the effective management of the officiating program brings with it some challenges including inap- propriate treatment of umpires by players, off-field staff and spectators and a lack of umpires. With this is in mind, the Group worked tirelessly to address issues of umpire abuse/ mistreatment “head on”, consider new pathways to identify, recruit and develop umpires and ensure equity in the allocation of umpires throughout our grades.

2016 was also the year where members of our WA hockey officiating were recognised on the world stage and our congratulations go to Tammy Standley, Melissa Trivic and Murray Grime who represented Australia as officials at the Rio Olympics.

International and National competitions also showcased other members of our WA hockey officiating community and we’d like to congratulate the following on their officiating achievements in 2016:

2017 I’m sure will bring with it more challenges and opportunities for the OAG but I am confident that our goals to increase our officiating num- bers, provide sound development pathways across our officiating levels and increase the number of officials representing WA at the National and International level will be achieved.

In closing, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of those in our officiating hockey community for their ongoing dedication and com- mitment to our sport and for rising to the numerous challenges that they face with professionalism and pride in often challenging and trying situations – hockey in WA (or anywhere for that matter) would not survive without you.

Yours in hockey,

MASTERS

Charter

The WA Masters Hockey Committee is a committee of Hockey WA and is responsible to the Management of Hockey WA and encompasses all matters relating to Masters Hockey and Masters Hockey State Teams.

Chairman’s Report

The WA Masters Committee Members elected at Annual Meeting and holding office during the year were Peter Westlund (Chairman), Jill van Duuren, Keith Gilbride, Sinead French-Bluhm Peter Connolly, Jean-Marie Rudd and John Heath. Following the 2015 Annual Meeting, Scott Mac- donald and Rona Craig offered to fill, and were appointed to, two of the three casual vacancies. Graham Newson was appointed as Secretary to the Committee. Committee Members hold portfolio responsibilities and continue to discharge these with considerable energy and terrific success. I acknowledge and congratulate Committee Members’ significant contributions during the year.

As the Charter specifies, the Committee has significant advisory and operational responsibilities. In its advisory capacity, the Committee pro- vides advice to Hockey WA management and staff on a wide range of local competition issues and policies, and the development of Masters Hockey for the hockey community. Its operational responsibilities encompass selecting coaches, managers and players to participate in the annual Australian Masters’ Championships, this year held in Adelaide for Men’s Teams and for Women’s Teams, and the significant as- sociated logistical arrangements.

Local Competition

Thirty-five teams took the field in four divisions of the Women’s Wednesday Night Masters Competitions, an increase of one team on last year. Two new teams were admitted to the competitions with one team not renominating this year. The additional synthetic turf surface capacity at UWA allowed the Women’s Masters competitions to meet club and player demand this year. However, turf capacity continues to be the subject of year-by-year review.

Another continuing concern is the low number of teams in the premier Women’s Masters Rae Blunt competition where only 7 teams partici- pated this year. There appears to be a perception that the grade is too strong for entry from Division Two. However, in not making the move, club teams which are eligible do not provide their players with an opportunity for development of Women’s Masters Hockey in WA and for their club. The Committee will work with clubs to moderate this perception. Hale were Grand Final winners of the 2016 Rae Blunt Pennant competition.

Seventy-Three teams took the field in Men’s Masters Saturday afternoon competitions, an increase of one in 2015, and 11 teams participated in the Over 40 Midweek Division on Monday night. Grand Final Winners in Division 1 for each grade included YMCC in Over 40, Fremantle in Over 40 Midweek, Modernians in Over 50 and Westside Wolves in Over 60. The Western Hockey Masters club also facilitate Over 50 and Over 60 Master’s hockey competitions on a Wednesday afternoon at Perth Hockey Stadium and an Over 65s competition on Saturday afternoons at Perry Lakes most weeks of the year. Men’s Masters hockey players in WA are fortunate to have this level of choice of participation.

Australian Masters Championships

Hobart hosted the 2016 Women’s Australian Masters Championships with WA Masters Hockey fielding teams in Over 40 through to Over 65 divisions, an inaugural year for the Over 65 competition. Results for the Championships were Over 40, Gold Medal; Over 45, Silver Medal; Over 50, Gold Medal; Over 55, 4th; Over 60, Silver Medal and Over 65, 4th. An Over 35 team was not fielded due to insufficient nominations.

The WA contingent won the Anne Stewart Perpetual Trophy for best overall State for a restricted (reduced team numbers) State. Nine players and one shadow player from Western Australian teams were selected to play in the Australian Women’s Masters Teams for the 2017 Trans- Tasman Masters Challenge at Whangarei, New Zealand in May. Allison Rieck was appointed Coach of the Women’s Australian Over 35 Team, having completed a successful appointment as Australian Women’s Over 50 Coach in 2016.

Adelaide hosted the Men’s Australian Masters Championships after an absence of 19 years. Nine teams from Over 40 Division through to the inaugural Over 75 Division were entered in the Championships. WA won Gold Medals in the Over 45, Over 50, Over 50/2 Over 55, Over 55/2 and Over 65 Divisions, a Silver Medal in the Over 75 Division, a Bronze Medal in the Over 70 Division and came 7th in the Over 40 and 4th in Over 60 Divisions. Selected in Australian Teams to participate in the 2017 Trans-Tasman Masters Challenge, also at Whangarei, New Zealand in May, were 24 players, 11 shadow players, and Cameron Fairbrother as Coach of the Australian Over 55 Team and Paula Dick as Australian Over

50 Manager. Congratulations to all successful WA teams and Australian selections.

The overall performance of the WA Masters Hockey Women’s and Men’s Teams in 2016 is exceptional and demonstrates that we are perform- ing well above expectations for the size of our player base and shows that our Selection Policies and Procedures and team preparation is high- class. A warm thank you and congratulations to the coaches, managers and sports health professionals who helped deliver these outstanding results. Newcastle is the venue for the Women’s Australian Masters Hockey Championships and Hobart for Men’s Championships in Septem- ber/October 2017.

Committee Outlook

The Committee makes a significant contribution to the development of Masters Hockey in WA to meet the needs of participants with a- pre dominantly volunteer base. It could not deliver these results without the support of Hockey WA and I would like to acknowledge and thank Hockey WA CEO Peter Churack and his staff for their assistance throughout the year.

2017 presents the challenge of continuing to implement our Strategic Plan, revised as necessary, to ensure that the WA Masters Hockey Com- mittee’s activities meet the needs of Masters Hockey players to participate in the game of hockey at all levels. Of significance, is the need to encourage players who are reaching the age of eligibility for Masters Hockey to consider continuing their participation into and beyond Over 35 and Over 40 competitions.

To this end, the Committee is trialling Over 30 Summer competitions with the expectation that there is recognition of Over 35 Australian Mas- ters competitions and Women’s Over 35 and Men’s Over 40 WA competitions by the participating players. In addition, there is an opportunity to offer an entry level Women’s Masters competition on weekdays throughout the year to provide Masters Hockey at a variety of levels of skill and fitness for women.

These and other action plans to improve participation in, and enjoyment of, Masters Hockey are a focus of the WA Masters Hockey Committee’ 2017 agenda.

WAIS WOMEN’S REPORT 2016 started with the National Futures Camp on the Gold Coast in January. Jemma Green, Annie Gibbs, Sienna Archer and Pippa Morgan were involved in the futures camp that was a mixture of training and matches against visiting New Zealand and Japanese teams.

The futures camp was followed by the arrival of Georgia Wilson, Shanea Tonkin, Candyce Peacock and Aleisha Power to take part in the nation- al junior camp and Oceania Test Series against New Zealand. Pippa Morgan was invited to attend the camp on the back of her performances at the futures camp.

After two practice matches, a national junior team was selected to play against New Zealand, and all five girls were selected for the 3 test series. Australia improved their performances with each match and concluded the series with a 3-0 win.

In February, the WAIS program welcomed Sara Foster, Jemma Green, Candyce Peacock and Renee Rockliff to its training program in 2016. These girls performed very well in their respective under age national events. Candyce and Sara had particularly good tournaments, and were rewarded with further selection into their respective national squads.

In March Penny Squibb, Aleisha Power and Kyra Flynn were selected to play in a three match series against China with the national develop- ment team. This providedfurther international experience for these girls and all provided strong performances.

Following the National U21 tournament in , where WA finished second to Queensland, nine WAIS athletes were selected to attend the National Training Centre Challenge in Canberra. This was the final selection point for the 2016 Junior World Cup Squad.

Six of these athletes were then selected for the JWC Squad: Georgia Wilson, Shanea Tonkin, Candyce Peacock and Aleisha Power, were joined by Pippa Morgan and Annie Gibbs as members of this group.

Further to this, a national development team was selected to tour to England to play Great Britain and the Netherlands in a six match series. Georgia Wilson, Penny Squibb and Aleisha Power were part of a successful tour that finished with three wins, a draw and two losses in an excellent development opportunity for athletes and staff alike.

At this time, Kathryn Slattery was selected for the Rio Olympic Games Team, and made a commendable contribution at her first Olympic Games. Ash Nelson was unfortunately unavailable for selection due to an ACL injury that was sustained only a few months out from Rio.

At the completion of the National U18 event in Launceston, Sienna Archer and Sara Foster were selected for the 2017 National Futures pro- gram. The U18 team performed very well and although settling for bronze, showed potential for a talented group to build on this result in the coming years.

Following the AHL, Kathryn Slattery was selected for a series against New Zealand and then India as she continues to lead the Australian for- ward line at senior international level.

Georgia Wilson and Aleisha Power were selected for the Junior World Cup to be held in Santiago, Chile. This will be the final competitive event for 2016.

The coming months are filled with great expectation as Hockey Australia will announce their coaching staff for the Tokyo cycle, to be followed by the release of national squads and program plans for 2017.

Bunbury Hockey is heading in a positive direction with consistent numbers, we have also had an amazing 22 junior athletes attend state this year, and also 1 junior umpire attend states.

This year saw Wests Men win their first SWHL premiership, and the Boyanup ladies once again taking home the title.

The A2W was again taken out by Marist making it back to back for them; the A2M was won by Collie for the first time in the Bunbury competition. The A3 division was dominated by Marist with both Men and Women winning the premiership.

Looking forward to a successful season in 2017.

BUSSELTON HOCKEY ASSOCIATION

2016 was another busy season for Busselton with a large number of South West Strikers games and South West League (SWL) games being playing at the Stadium. And finally, 22 years after their last SWL Grand Final win, West’s men bought home the silverware. Both South West league Grand Finals were held in Busselton with a large portion of the crowd supporting the home side, which Wests won 3 - 1. The women’s South West league Grand Final was a hard fought game between Collie and Boyanup and the scores were level on the final siren. With just six seconds to play in the second lot of extra time Boyanup scored the winning goal.

The 2016 season concluded on the weekend of October 8 & 9 with our annual Retravision Masters Carnival which saw 28 teams from the Great Southern, South West and Perth Metro areas make the treck to Busselton. The weather proved to be a bit of a challenge with all four season over the weekend but all teams had an enjoyable weekend of hockey and socialising and vowed to return in 2017.

PEEL HOCKEY ASSOCIATION

2016 was a year of consolidation and planning for hockey in the 2016 PREMIERS - Peel region. We have continued on our program of development in LOCAL COMPETITIONS all areas of our responsibilities, with much progress in umpire MEN’S DIVISION ONE development and a continuing coaching and player development plan across all ages. Without being proactive in these areas enthu- MIDCITY HOCKEY CLUB siasm drops away and both our local hockey and Metro teams WOMEN’S DIVISION ONE will suffer. Our progress is already evident with our junior Metro PINJARRA HOCKEY CLUB team enthusiasm and the players’ willingness to participate in our senior Metro sides. WOMEN’S DIVISION TWO HALLS HEAD HOCKEY CLUB This was a year where our financial base was more solid despite substantial infrastructure expenses throughout the season. We are J9/12 also on track with forward planning to replace our turf for 2019 MANDURAH HOCKEY CLUB season. J7/8 MANDURAH HOCKEY CLUB With a new Strategic plan in place Peel Hockey is looking forward with confidence for the next few years. UPPER GREAT SOUTHERN HOCKEY ASSOCIATION 2016 was a huge year for the UGSHA with the resurfacing of our facility with the top of the range Tiger Turf Wet Pro surface being completed in late December 2015. This resurfacing was also the catalyst for other upgrades to our facility with new retaining walls, storage area, sea contain- ers, and a $60,000 children’s playground being built at the hockey stadium to service the UGSHA families and the wider community. These fa- cilities, coupled with our full digital full video scoreboard and entertainment system, were part of a proposal to Hockey Australia to potentially host a National level match or even “pie in the sky” - an international match.

In March Hockey Australia visited UGSHA and were privy to a full tour of the hockey facility and the adjoining Regional Rec Centre, with a view that there may be something in the pipeline for an international Match Vs Great Britain. In cutting a long story short, we were successful in gaining not one – but two internationals between the Kookaburras and Great Britain on the 21 & 22 May (coincidentally the 21st May delivered the worst weather conditions in Narrogin for 50 odd years). Despite all the bad weather, we managed to successfully pull off the series, which was being broadcast worldwide via Epicentre TV.

This was a HUGE coup for the UGSHA and one we are all extremely proud of.

In regards to our local competition and our successes, the UGSHA had a great season with the culmination of the year being our Grand Final series. The talking point of the finals was the Men’s A grade, where a team (All Blacks) scraped into the final four after only winning four games all season, and eventually made it into the Grand Final to play Warriors (who had only lost one game all year – to All Blacks coincidentally). No one gave All Blacks a chance, but they played out of their socks and defeated the hot favourites to claim back to back premierships.

The final tables for the UGSHA were:

Team Team Team Men A Grade Women A Grade Upper School Competition ALLBLACKS WARRIORS WOMEN EAGLES WARRIORS MEN WAGIN VULTURES OLYMPICS WILLIAMS NRC TOUCANS RIFFS ROBINS (UGSHA) FALCONS ALL BLACKS A MIGHTY DUCKS COLLEGIANS Men B Grade Women B Grade AG RANGERS WARRIORS MEN WARRIORS WOMEN Middle School Competition DUMBLEYUNG PINGELLY PUMAS WAGIN WICKEPIN TIGERS RIFFS WAGIN PANTHERS WILLIAMS BROOKTON LEOPARDS ALLBLACKS WILLIAMS COUGARS PINGELLY ROBINS WHITE NRC LIONS OLYMPICS ALLBLACKS Lower School Competition ROBINS RED WILLIAMS DUMBLEYUNG STINGRAYS DINGOES BULLDOGS BROOKTON WAGIN DEVILS SAINTS

We have had a changing of the leadership team this October when Mark Regan stepped down as President after nine years and Andrew Corner stepped up from Vice President to take on the role. We plan to continue to develop our facility to make it the best regional hockey stadium in WA. We are also planning for the next international match hosting gig in the next year or so.

We look forward to working with Hockey WA and Hockey Australia to further support our sport and our athletes across all levels.

Mark Regan President – UGSHA (now Vice President)

The 2016 season saw 66 teams entere, an increase from 2015 by three teams. 43 of these teams were juniors and 23 were seniors. Great Southern Grammar, Vikings and Mount Barker Hockey Club made up the majority of the teams. Both the Albany turf (regional centre of the LGSHA) and the new turf in Mount Barker were used extensively throughout the season, with one junior grade played on grass.

In conjunction with HWA, a ‘Regional Roadshow’ was held early in 2016. From 18 to 21 February, HWA and the Association focused on junior player development – Association players and schools in the region. In addition, a coaching clinic was held with a number of local coaches -at taining Level 1.

Six junior players were selected for State teams this year with an increase in the number of junior players taking part in TAP in Perth.

Year 11/12 boys and girls teams were successful in the State Championships coming second and first respectively.

The Association has formed a sub-committee to look at turf replacement with the intent of a new turf ready for the 2018 season.
