As Samuel Peploe's grandson, Guy Peploe has access to all the major public and private collections. Born in Edinburgh, he was drawn to France and returned to paint there frequently, moving in to Paris, where he moved in artistic avant-garde circles. His painting style gave way to a more contemporary and expressive approach, and he used rich colours applied with more structured brushstrokes. In Peploe returned to Edinburgh and slowly began to build a successful career as an exhibiting artist. From around until his death, he sought to paint the perfect still life. A modest selection of props, including roses or tulips, fans, books, fruits and Chinese vases, were carefully placed in infinite varieties on patterned drapery. In he explained: 'There is so much in mere objects, flowers, leaves, jugs, what not - colours, forms, relation - I can never see mystery coming to an end'. Cox was awarded a PhD in History of Art from the University of Leeds in 2014, where he specialised in 19th-century Nordic art. He shares his interests between this topic and British art of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In addition to teaching at ICE, Cambridge, Jan is a regular tutor for Oxford University weekly classes, lectures at arts organisations, including Dillington House, and tutors an online course on the Impressionists. At Oxford Brookes University, Jan was awarded the Jeanne Sheehy Memorial Prize for work on Christopher Wood, an MA at Bristol followed, where his studies focused on John Minton, Keith Vaughan and British Neo-Romanticism. Subsequently, at the University of Plymouth, he placed online Wyndham Lewis's art criticism in 'The Listener' magazine (1946-51). He has lectured extensively throughout Britain, in addition to addressing conferences in Copenhagen, Montreal, Rome, Greifswald and Oslo, and at Tate Britain and Tate St. Ives. In the past year we have been relieved to discover that, despite global financial difficulties, there is still a strong market for original drawings and watercolours of high quality. Traditionally the fields of British Watercolours on the one hand, and Old Master, 19th century and modern drawings on the other, have each had their own collectors, auctions and exhibitions. The aim of this catalogue, and indeed the aim of our shared gallery as a whole, is to blur the distinction between these collecting areas, and hopefully show that a good drawing is always a good drawing, whoever the artist and whatever the date. The present catalogue includes a wide range of British and European drawings and watercolours, placed more or less in chronological order, ranging in date from the 16th century until the present day. As a glance at the enclosed price list will show, the prices of the drawings and watercolours are equally broad in scope - from under £1,000 to around £10,000 – with a large number of interesting works at the lower end of this range.
