(JB) ‘Utter desperation’ for ex-LIAT workers By Krystal Penny Bowen

IT has been utter desperation for unemployed local workers of a troubled cash-strapped regional airline. Tearful, desperate and frustrated Barbadian ex-LIAT workers are calling on the local government to assist in the matter of unpaid monies owed to them by their former employer. Some of the former employees joined the Opposition Leader, Bishop Joseph Atherley, at his conference room at the Worthing Corporate Centre yesterday. Captain Neil Cave, Pilot Ronald Field and Senior Cabin Crew instructor, Kelly-ann Franklin, expressed their plight as they all have been left in limbo – facing persistent creditors as they try desperately to survive and keep their mortgages or rented properties. Cave, who spoke first, gave an overview of the past events. He indicated that it has been 393 days or over a year since 94 workers from Barbados have been laid off from LIAT.

Populations in vulner- able circumstances, par- ticularly women, young people, groups in the lower economic status and people with pre-ex- isting mental health con- ditions, have been signif- icantly affected by the pandemic and report high levels of anxiety and depression,” Dr. Hennis pointed out. He added, “Despite the acknowledgement of the impact of mental health, scaling up of proven men- tal health strategies and interventions remains a challenge and the stig- matisation and discrimi- nation and human rights abuses of persons with mental health conditions continues.” Pointing out that one in four persons will expe- rience mental health con- ditions in their lifetime, he suggested that the time has come to recog- nise issues with mental health as being amongst the other non-communi- cable diseases. Stressing that there remains a large gap between the global mental health bur- den and investment, with countries setting aside an average of 42% of their health budgets for mental health conditions, Dr. Hennis suggested that much more must be done to scale up services and invest in better care and treatment for those affected. T20 World Cup could be moved to United Arab Emirates, says BCCI THIS year’s Twenty20 World Cup could be moved to the United Arab Emirates if India continues to suffer with a second wave of the coronavirus pan- demic. The tournament is due to begin in October, but the COVID death toll in India has passed 200,000, with at least 300,000 new infections every day in the past week. Last week, India joined the UK’s travel red list – effectively banning travel to and from the country. Other countries – includ- ing Australia – have also closed their borders to India.
