Patil Benjamin Luke Williams ABHINAVAGUPTA’S PORTRAIT OF GURU: REVELATION AND RELIGIOUS AUTHORITY IN KASHMIR ABSTRACT This dissertation aims to recover a model of religious authority that placed great importance upon individual gurus who were seen to be indispensable to the process of revelation. This person-centered style of religious authority is implicit in the teachings and identity of the scriptural sources of the Kulam!rga, a complex of traditions that developed out of more esoteric branches of tantric "aivism. For convenience sake, we name this model of religious authority a “Kaula idiom.” The Kaula idiom is contrasted with a highly influential notion of revelation as eternal and authorless, advanced by orthodox interpreters of the Veda, and other Indian traditions that invested the words of sages and seers with great authority. -

The origins, evolution and decline of the Khojki script Juan Bruce The origins, evolution and decline of the Khojki script Juan Bruce Dissertation submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Master of Arts in Typeface Design, University of Reading, 2015. 5 Abstract The Khojki script is an Indian script whose origins are in Sindh (now southern Pakistan), a region that has witnessed the conflict between Islam and Hinduism for more than 1,200 years. After the gradual occupation of the region by Muslims from the 8th century onwards, the region underwent significant cultural changes. This dissertation reviews the history of the script and the different uses that it took on among the Khoja people since Muslim missionaries began their activities in Sindh communities in the 14th century. It questions the origins of the Khojas and exposes the impact that their transition from a Hindu merchant caste to a broader Muslim community had on the development of the script. During this process of transformation, a rich and complex creed, known as Satpanth, resulted from the blend of these cultures. The study also considers the roots of the Khojki writing system, especially the modernization that the script went through in order to suit more sophisticated means of expression. As a result, through recording the religious Satpanth literature, Khojki evolved and left behind its mercantile features, insufficient for this purpose. Through comparative analysis of printed Khojki texts, this dissertation examines the use of the script in Bombay at the beginning of the 20th century in the shape of Khoja Ismaili literature. -

A translation of the Vijñāna-bhairava-tantra (complete but lacking commentary) ©2017 by Christopher Wallis aka Hareesh Introductory verse (maṅgala-śloka): “Shiva is also known as ‘Bhairava’ because He brings about the [initial awakening that makes us] cry out in fear of remaining in the dreamstate (bhava-bhaya)—and due to that cry of longing he becomes manifest in the radiant domain of the heart, bestowing absence of fear (abhaya) for those who are terrified. He is also known as Bhairava because he is the Lord of those who delight in his awesome roar (bhīrava), which signals the death of Death! Being the Master of that flock of excellent Yogins who tire of fear and seek release, he is Bhairava—the Supreme, whose form is Consciousness (vijñāna). As the giver of nourishment, he extends his Power throughout the universe!” ~ the great master Rājānaka Kṣemarāja, c. 1020 CE Like most Tantrik scriptures, the Vijñāna-bhairava-tantra (c. 850 CE) takes the form of a dialogue between Śiva and Śakti, here called Bhairava and Bhairavī. It begins with the Goddess asking Bhairava: śrutaṃ deva mayā sarvaṃ rudra-yāmala-saṃbhavam | trika-bhedam aśeṣeṇa sārāt sāra-vibhāgaśaḥ || 1 || . 1. O Lord, I have heard the entire teaching of the Trika1 that has arisen from our union, in scriptures of ever greater essentiality, 2. but my doubts have not yet dissolved. What is the true nature of Reality, O Lord? Does it consist of the powers of the mystic alphabet (śabda-rāśi)?2 3. Or, amongst the terrifying forms of Bhairava, is it Navātman?3 Or is it the trinity of śaktis (Parā, Parāparā, and Aparā) that [also] constitute the three ‘heads’ of Triśirobhairava? 4. -

This research paper describes a corpus based transliteration system for Punjabi language. The existence of two scripts for Punjabi language has created a script barrier between the Punjabi literature written in India and in Pakistan. This research project has developed a new system for the first time of its kind for Shahmukhi script of Punjabi language. The proposed system for Shahmukhi to Gurmukhi transliteration has been implemented with various research techniques based on language corpus. The corpus analysis program has been run on both Shahmukhi and Gurmukhi corpora for generating statistical data for different types like character, word and n-gram frequencies. This statistical analysis is used in different phases of transliteration. Potentially, all members of the substantial Punjabi community will benefit vastly from this transliteration system. 1 Introduction One of the great challenges before Information Technology is to overcome language barriers dividing the mankind so that everyone can communicate with everyone else on the planet in real time. South Asia is one of those unique parts of the world where a single language is written in different scripts. This is the case, for example, with Punjabi language spoken by tens of millions of people but written in Indian East Punjab (20 million) in Gurmukhi script (a left to right script based on Devanagari) and in Pakistani West Punjab (80 million), written in Shahmukhi script (a right to left script based on Arabic), and by a growing number of Punjabis (2 million) in the EU and the US in the Roman script. -

Journal of Indian and Buddhist Studies, Vol. 52, No. 2, March 2004 ( 45 ) Untouchables in Hindu Tantric Literature Hiroki WATANABE 1 It is well known that what is called Hindu Tantrism, on the assumption of the concept of the corruption of the Kali Age (kaliyuga), denies caste discrimination and makes the practice of its doctrine open to people of all castes and that it reveals a new and easy way by which even the people in this age can attain moksa or final emancipation from transmigration.1)We can generally recognize in Tantric practices some aspects that are inherited from traditional Brahmanism or Hinduism and at the same time other elements different from them .2) Each of Hindu Tantric works, the number of which is enormous, includes various ideas or thoughts. We can sometimes find contradictory ones even in a single text. Moreover, many written sources of Hindu Tantrism to be directly based on yet remain to be edited critically in the strict sense of the word. Then the purpose of this paper is, taking up comparatively popular texts considered to belong to the Sakta or the Kaula that have several editions respectively : the Mahanirvanatantra (=Mnt), the Kularnavatantra(=Kt), the Jnanarnavatantra(=Jt), and the Rudrayamala- Uttaratantra (=Ry-Ut)3), to consider what they describes concerning what is called untouchables. 2 As to the view on the varna-system, first of all, it must be noted that in addition to the traditional four•\that is, brahmana, ksatriya, vaisya, and sudra•\Mnt acknowledges the fifth varna called samanya for the Kali Age when humanity is held to become corrupted.') -910- ( 46 ) Untouchables in Hindu Tantric Literature (H. -

Demand for Separate Lingayat religion Why in news? \n\n The Karnataka government decided to recommend to the Centre to grant religious minority status to the Lingayat community. \n\n What is the state government decision? \n\n \n Lingayats account for nearly 17 per cent of the state’s population. \n The demand for separate religion tag and minority status is a long pending demand of the Lingayat community. \n The State Cabinet has decided to accept the recommendations of the state minority commission in this regard. \n The religious minority recognition will thus be granted under the Karnataka Minorities Act. \n The status will cover two factions of the community — Lingayats and Veerashaiva Lingayats. \n The State Cabinet also decided to forward the demand to the Centre for notifying under the Central Minority Commission Act. \n \n\n Who are the Lingayats? \n\n \n The Lingayats are strict monotheists. \n They instruct the worship of only one God, namely, Linga (Shiva). \n ‘Linga’ here does not mean Linga established in temples. \n It is rather the universal consciousness qualified by the universal energy (Shakti). \n Status - Lingayats are currently classified as a Hindu sub-caste called “Veerashaiva Lingayats”. \n There is a general misconception that Lingayatism is a subsect of Shaivism, which is itself a sect of Hinduism. \n There is also a misconception that the Lingayats are Shudras. \n But textual evidence and reasoning suggests that Lingayatism is not a sect or subsect of Hinduism, but an independent religion. \n \n\n How did it evolve? \n\n \n The community actually evolved from a 12th century movement led by social reformer and philosopher-saint Basavanna.
