Submitted by Debbie Ray Everyone should experience winter camping at least once in their life time, it is enlightening and empowering. Ever wondered what it’s like to sleep in a “Quinzee”? Twelve grade seven students from Bruce Peninsula District School (BPDS) can tell you all about their experience! A quinzee is similar to an igloo; an igloo is made out of blocks of snow, but making blocks of snow on the Bruce Peninsula isn’t particularly easy. Our conditions are more suited to quinzees, as all you need is a relatively flat area with an abundance of snow. The schoolyard at BPDS made a perfect base camp for our “Intermediate Outers” on Friday, January 28th. Quinzee construction began on Friday morning with the help from the grade seven and eight classes. Five mounds of snow were piled to the desired height (typically six to ten feet), and then allowed to harden for the remainder of the day. After school on Friday, four groups of three students claimed their snow mound and it all became very real. Students Photo: Ready to brave the cold winter night. Charges Withdrawn in Lindsay Road 20 Beach Dispute A long-standing dispute about the use of a beach at the end of Bass Road (Lindsay Road 20 area) has taken another bizarre twist. Adjacent landowners claim their property line extends to the water’s edge, wherever that may be. Traditional users of the beach say that public use of the beach was guaranteed in the original Plan of Subdivision. On September 4, 2010, a group of citizens entered the beach (photo below) and the adjacent landowners called the OPP. Police officers attended and wrote trespassing tickets to three people. The tickets were contested on the grounds that the beach is public, not private, property. The court date was to have been Jan 27, but the Crown Prosecutor withdrew the charges. A similar dispute at “The Rocks” at Whiskey Harbour reached a similar impasse many years ago. That case is currently winding its way through the legal system. A Tight Spot for an Emergency Vehicle Carter Lane, Lion’s Head — one of the prettiest places in Northern Bruce Peninsula, reached via a romantic, one lane road that twists along the shoreline with no turnaround at the end. Fire and Ambulance crews were misdirected here once in 2010. They spent quite a while getting turned around after the 911 operator gave them the correct location. Meanwhile a man lay dying at Carter Road in Cape Chin South. The Municipality of Northern Bruce Peninsula is moving to end such confusion (see Publisher’s Rant, page 4).
