The Advantages of Microform

Despite the continually developing array of digital technologies—and sometimes because of it— information professionals at libraries and universities worldwide still rely on microform. They know it is an archival medium that will meet the needs of researchers for years to come. Microform provides many advantages including:

 New Viewer/Scanners - Images can now be easily sent to remote locations using microform viewer/scanners, which link to your computer workstations, letting you view and print articles or digitize and transmit them electronically (within Fair Use guidelines). This approach combines the unparalleled preservation and storage benefits of microform with the speed and ease of electronic access.  Special Collections - Microform is the answer if you need hard-to-find or specialty resources. Many older newspapers and periodicals are available only in microform, and it gives your users access to complete page images from historical titles—often from the first issue .  Space Savings - Microform lets you store an extensive collection of complete article images in a small amount of space. Microform takes up less than one-tenth the area of bound copies of newspapers and periodicals.  Ownership - There is no upkeep or access fees. It uses stable, proven technology you already have, with no need for new workstations or continual software upgrades.  Clarity and Accuracy - Microform is the answer if you need cover-to-cover clarity and accuracy. Full-image articles are essential to getting the full story.  Complete Collection - Microform usually is the best solution if you need a complete collection fast. Maybe you’re seeking accreditation or even rebuilding after a disaster. An extensive, customized collection of retrospective and current microform titles will meet the needs of your researchers quickly and efficiently.  Support for Specialized Studies – A compact collection in microform will meet specialized research needs and still leave plenty of resources for the rest of your population. Many libraries also use microform as an added point of access for content that is most in demand.  Durability - archived properly, it can last for generations, and there is no degradation of images.  ProQuest Quality - ProQuest’s microform images are taken directly from the original printed pages, so you always get the clarity of first-generation copies.

ProQuest Microform is the answer because we’ve been producing it since 1938. We not only exceed industry standards, we set them. Our microform products include thousands of newspapers and periodicals, and hundreds of research collections, many of which are not available from any other source.

The BBC Summary of World Broadcasts 1939 - 1997

In the summer of 1939, with a world war on the horizon and many of the normal communication channels about to disappear, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) began monitoring radio broadcasts in other countries. They began with five countries. Since then, monitoring has grown to include over 100 countries.

Throughout the world, the BBC continually monitors major foreign radio broadcasts from strategically placed listening posts. Transcripts of broadcasts are then edited and translated into English.

In addition to being useful for studying current global affairs, the BBC Summary of World Broadcasts chronicles important historical events, such as the first man in space, the invasion of Czechoslovakia, and the Chernobyl incident. Included are detailed accounts of events from different perspectives--some factual, some propaganda. These uncensored transcripts often provide critical information not available through "official" news sources.

Due to the overwhelming quantity of broadcasts, the BBC Summary of World Broadcasts provides a representative sample of the material monitored. Publications and topics include speeches by national leaders; military, political, economic, scientific, and cultural developments and appointments; propaganda trends, including subversion and incitement to revolt (particularly by means of "freedom stations" purporting to operate within the country addressed, but in reality outside it); and radio developments. During time of war, publications also include official war communiqués, news reports from the fronts, reports indicative of resistance activities, and news and talks giving indications of public morale.

The BBC Summary of World Broadcasts is available in sets organized by region, by time period, or both. Prior to 1947, all parts were grouped together into one series in Digest of World Broadcasts (the publication's original name). In the years that followed, groupings varied in size and number (for example, from 1947-1949, the Summary of World Broadcasts was divided into three parts: U.S.S.R. and Eastern Europe; Germany and Austria; and the rest of the world). Publication frequency also varied, from daily publication in 1939 to six days a week. (At times, frequency was five times a week and periodical.)

Also included is The Monitoring Report, a brief summary of the major items and trends of broadcasting throughout the world, which was published daily from April 1940 to January 1947 and five times a week from 1947 to November 30, 1996.

California Academy of Science Vascular Plant Type Collection 1851 - 1900 The remarkable herbarium of the California Academy of Sciences reproduced on microfiche. During the second half of the 19th century the herbarium of the California Academy of Sciences became the largest and most important research collection in the region with over 2,000 types from California and western North America. One of the few Academy collections to survive the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, the herbarium continued to flourish as a major centre for floristic and taxonomic research. Strengthened by the addition of several private herbaria, it was integrated with the Dudley Herbarium of Stanford University in 1976 thereby gaining two major historical collections: the G. Gautier Herbarium and a duplicate of the Harvey Herbarium including early collections from Europe, Africa, Australia, the Indian Ocean and Asia. CA, USA 263 fiche

Cook, Captain James. Log and Journal of His Journey Round the World in the Bark “Endeavour”* 1768 - 1771 This log, in two different hands (neither of them Cook’s) is the original of many of the extant logs of Captain Cook’s first voyage of circumnavigation and came to the British Library on the death of Sir Joseph Banks in 1820. It contains the official record of the voyage, giving details of weather, sightings, significant events and the daily navigational record. On this voyage, Cook surveyed New Zealand, establishing that it was not part of the great southern continent, which was believed to exist. He also explored the east and west sides of the South Pacific and discovered and surveyed the east coast of Australia. From the British Library, Add. Ms. 8959 London, England 1 reel 35mm

The Gerritsen Collection of Women’s History 1543 - 1945 ‘It is safe to say that no other collection in this country offers such resources for comparative studies of the feminist movement.’ ~ Anne Firor Scott, Duke University

The Gerritsen Collection of Women’s History provides an entire international library spanning four centuries and documenting the lives and experiences of women in the public and private arenas. Widely acclaimed as the greatest single source for the study of international women’s history and the feminist movement, this collection was begun in the late 19th century by Aletta Jacobs Gerritsen. This leading feminist and the Netherlands’ first woman doctor brought together an unmatched body of material from:  Continental Europe  the United States  the United Kingdom  Canada  Australia  New Zealand These materials permit scholars and researchers to study what authors from various countries were writing about women during the same periods in history. The anti-feminist case is heard as well as the pro-feminist. Many other titles present a purely objective record of the condition of women during a given historical period. Considered a desideratum for any library supporting programs in women’s history, social history and the history of ideas, the collection is divided into two Series: the Monograph Language Series and the Periodical Series. Human Relations Area Files Human Relations Area Files, Inc. (HRAF) is an internationally recognized organization in the field of cultural anthropology. Established as a not-for-profit membership consortium of universities, colleges and research institutions, HRAF’s mission is to provide information that facilitates the cross-cultural study of human behavior, society and culture. HRAF grew out of work in the 1930s by behavioral scientists at the Yale University Institute of Human Relations who began development of a classification scheme for cultural information by subject. The Human Relations Area Files was incorporated in 1949 with Harvard University, the University of Oklahoma, the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Washington and Yale University as its founding members. These five were joined within the year by the University of Chicago, the University of North Carolina and the University of Southern California. Some 300 colleges, universities, libraries, museums and research institutions in the United States and 25 other countries are now Associate or Sponsoring Members.

HRAF is a financially independent research agency of Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. Since World War II, the growing concern of students, scholars and the general public around the world to understand ethnic conflict, cultural diversity and global problems has generated a demand for educational and research programs emphasizing the worldwide, comparative study of human behavior and society. The development of cross-cultural and area studies requires an extensive body of readily available organized cultural information. Scattered among myriad journals, dissertations and fieldwork studies and across numerous disciplines, conventional sources of such information are often inaccessible, expensive and difficult to utilize effectively. The HRAF collections are specifically designed to lessen these barriers to cross-cultural research. Only members of HRAF can acquire access to HRAF collections. Thus individuals or institutions (colleges, universities, public libraries, museums, high schools, etc.) must first become members of the HRAF consortium before they can acquire microfiche. All applicants must be approved by the Board of HRAF. However, virtually all applicants are accepted. Please inquire for additional information  Selected Sample File Set HRAF has created the Selected Sample File Set (also known as the Probability Sample Files), a specially selected group of 60 representative cultures from around the word, to enable global comparative studies when an institution is not able to acquire the complete collection. The materials in these files touch upon virtually all of the areas of social and cultural life of most interest to scholars and students. Each of the cultures in the Sample Set represents a different cultural area.  Oceania – Aranda; Kapauku; Lau (Lau Fijians); Tikopia; Trobriands; Truk (Chuuk)  Regional Groups – Oceania  Aranda  Marshalls  Tasmanians  Buka  Murngin  Tikopia  Easter Islanders  New Ireland  Tiwi  Kapauku  Northeastern Massim  Tonga  Kwoma  Orokaiva  Trobriands  Lau (Lau Fijians)  Palau (Belau)  Truk (Chuuk)  Malekula  Pukapuka  Wogeo  Manus  Samoa  Woleai  Maori  Santa Cruz  Yap  Marquesas 29 culture files on 1,723 fiche  Oceania – Outline of World Cultures Subsets:  Australia – Aranda, Murngin, Tasmanians and Tiwi; 221 fiche  New Guinea – Kapauku, Kwoma, Orokaiva and Wogeo; 143 fiche  Massim – Northeastern Massim and Trobriands; 84 fiche  Bismarck Archipelago – Manus and New Ireland; 72 fiche  Solomon Islands – Buka and Santa Cruz; 48 fiche  New Hebrides (Vanuatu) – Malekula; 18 fiche  Fiji – Lau (Lau Fijians); 32 fiche  Micronesia – Marshalls, Palau (Belau), Truk (Chuuk), Woleai and Yap; 455 fiche  Polynesian Outliers – Tikopia; 78 fiche  Western Polynesia – Samoa and Tonga; 367 fiche  French Polynesia – Marquesas; 35 fiche  Easter Island – Easter Islanders; 29 fiche  New Zealand – Maori and Pukapuka; 141 fiche

Oddfellows Friendly Society Records* 1829 - 1950 Friendly societies are mutual aid organizations designed to help people protect themselves against hardship. They were seen as a solution to the problems people knew they (or their families) would face should they fall ill or die leaving their children or spouse with limited resources. The friendly societies movement grew as new towns and industries developed in the 19th century and people found it difficult to rely on village communities. In the 20th century, state welfare provision in the UK improved. This rich collection reproduces the Magazines and Directories of one of the UK’s largest Friendly Society. The quarterly Magazine, first published in 1828 was available free to each member. The Magazine was an informal publication aimed at keeping members informed of the activities of branches around the world and also used as a forum to exchange opinions between branch members. Fronted by a comprehensive contents page, each edition included:  Portraits and Memoirs of senior or longstanding members  Details of Anniversaries and Presentations  Details of new lodge openings  Friendly Society issues and legislation  Letters written by members  Details of major events on world-wide branches  Obituaries  Articles and poems written by members  Comprehensive Portraits (inc photo/image) of eminent branch members The Oddfellows Directory and List of Lodges was an annual publication dating from 1841. The Directory was official reference publication for the society detailing each branch in existence and offering a lodge summary in the form of statistics and tables: Each and every branch was listed, first by Country, then by District. Details of each branch are provided, with the address, number of members and details of when the branch met. There are also details on the:  Number of adult members  Amount of funds at last Audit  Number of members admitted  Number of members excluded  Number of member deaths during the year  Average age of members Records are available for the UK, Australia, US and Canada. There are lists of Lodges that have been opened or closed that year, lists of members per region and whether they are state insured or not. There is a list of the Annual Moveable Conferences and where these were held each year, a list of officers of the order and board of directors, and finally a comprehensive index to each lodge in alphabetical order. Public Record Office: Foreign Office Registers and Indexes of Correspondence 1793 - 1919 The only means of access to the correspondence and dispatches of the Foreign Office is through the contemporary handwritten Registers in the Reference Room of the Public Record Office. The correspondents were  Statesmen  Ambassadors  Consuls  Spies  British travellers abroad  Foreign citizens from every part of the world This consular reporting and intelligence gathering system provides what is often the only consistent series of reports in existence on the political and economic history of many countries. Three sets of Foreign Office Registers have been published on microfiche together with the contemporary indexes. Since documents listed in the Registers cannot be identified and retrieved without their Class List numbers the relevant Class List number has been added to each microfiche. Researchers are generally interested in the diplomatic correspondence with a particular country. The Registers and Indexes have been published in the following groups of countries. The P.R.O. The British Empire is no more, its place taken by a multitude of free and independent states. Its legacy, however, survives in the form of social and economic transformations, cultural ties and a body of laws and precedents that link nations from Australia to Zimbabwe, from Belize to Vanuatu. The institutional expression of these ties is the Commonwealth of Nations and its highest governing body, the Commonwealth Secretariat. Each issue of the Bulletin contains the following: o Summaries of important legislation from each member state o Key judicial decisions o Reports on legal reform o Notice of new regulations affecting legal professionals in the member states o Changes and decisions in international conventions and courts as they affect member states o Top-ranked scholarly articles on international law o Book reviews, notices and announcements Commonwealth nations share an underlying body of law and precedents, impacting the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Singapore, South Africa and the Indian subcontinent, as well as numerous other countries in Africa, the Caribbean, Europe and East Asia. This makes the Commonwealth Law Bulletin an essential resource for legal scholars, students or practitioners with an interest in these countries, no matter where they are. Now, with publication of the microfiche edition, libraries can provide their patrons with ready access to the full backfile of this significant publication, in a lasting, secure format silver halide microfiche. Vols. 1-26; Includes indexes; Continuation available at 16 fiche per year 463 fiche
