The Newsletter of the Atlanta 400 Baseball Fan Club ________________________________________________________________________________ April 2021 By Dave Badertscher After 18 long months without “live” Braves baseball in Atlanta, more than 14,000 masked, socially distanced fans turned out for Opening Night at Truist Park on Friday, April 9. When the gates opened the stadium began filling to 33% capacity, our eyes drawn to “44” etched in center field as “real” fans replaced the cardboard cutouts of 2020. We eagerly anticipated a much needed in-person baseball experience. It was high time for a rematch of the opening series in Philly, which had not gone well for our guys. Charlie Morton vs. Zack Wheeler rebooted. Braves fans were pumped! What would Opening Night at a Braves game be without evoking memories of the franchise’s 50+ years relationship with the city of Atlanta and the South? A moving pregame ceremony paid tribute to the passing of Bill Bartholomay, Phil Niekro, Don Sutton, and Hank Aaron, highlighting their legendary contributions to the team, the game of baseball, and our community. Fan Club member Wayne Coleman (pictured bottom right) played “Amazing Grace” on bagpipes. Timothy Miller sang the “National Anthem.” Jets flew over. Fans stood and cheered. Braves Country at its best. The Tomahawk Times April 2021 Page 2 The Phillies brought an impressive, early 5-1 record to town. The pitching duel between Morton and Wheeler held until Ronald Acuna launched a 456 foot, two-run blast and the Braves scored three in the bottom of the 5th. The red-hot Acuna ending up going 4 for 5 and made a sensational run-saving catch in the 6th.

  • SF Giants Press Clips Tuesday, August 7, 2018
SF Giants Press Clips Tuesday, August 7, 2018 San Francisco Chronicle Giants blow 9th-inning lead, fall 3-1 to Astros John Shea The world champs came to town, though they weren’t quite as recognizable as they were in October because of injuries to several front-line players. In the end, it didn’t matter. The Astros were still the Astros. The Giants were one out from beating shorthanded Houston 1-0 in Monday night’s opener of a quick two-game series, but closer Will Smith yielded a three-run homer to Marwin Gonzalez, permitting the Astros to celebrate a 3-1 victory. For much of the evening, the story line for the Giants was Brandon Crawford’s sixth-inning home run and seven spectacular innings by Rookie of the Year candidate Dereck Rodriguez, who has been a savior in a year the rotation has been undermined by injuries. Smith walked Alex Bregman with one out and Yuli Gurriel with two away. Gonzalez crushed a 1- 0, down-the-middle fastball, and the Giants were denied their sixth win in eight games. “That’s baseball,” Rodriguez said. “Sometimes you’re dominant, and sometimes it’s just one bad pitch. Everybody’s trying. The great thing about this sport is, tomorrow (Smith) is going to get the ball again when we have the lead in the ninth inning. That’s part of the game, and that’s why we play.” Afterward, in the quiet of the clubhouse, Smith and Rodriguez crossed paths. Smith told the rookie he pitched beautifully, and the rookie wanted it known he had Smith’s back.

The Boston Red Sox Wednesday, May 26, 2021 * The Boston Globe Atlanta survives early flurry, keeps Red Sox in check for series-opening win Alex Speier Already, the Red Sox have proven capable of defying the measured expectations that greeted them at the start of the season. After a residence of more than six weeks in first place, their talent will no longer be overlooked. Still, their recent slip from atop the AL East has likewise offered a reminder. As the Sox hope to transform from early-season surprise to season-long contender, they do not have the luxury of fumbling opportunities in an ultra-competitive division. Tuesday night, a 3-1 loss to Atlanta at Fenway underscored the point. The Sox had an immediate chance to seize control of the game from opposing starter Charlie Morton. Instead, they blew it in a way that seemed at once impossible, yet somehow familiar. Despite six of the first eight Sox hitters reaching base, that game-opening pressure turned into just one run through two innings — and none thereafter. “When you have a man on third, I think we have to bear down, we have to put the ball in play,” said manager Alex Cora. “For us to keep the line moving and win close games, we have to do that. We haven’t been doing that for a while.” In the bottom of the first, the Sox loaded the bases (single, walk, error) with no outs. But that golden promise — a situation that, on average, produces more than two runs — soon proved a ruse.
