We were looking for family entertainment in Kaikoura, and we certainly found it. The Kaikoura Farm Park is one of those rare places where many of the animals free-range roam around the site, so you meet them in an intimate, hands-on, close-up way. The staff were all friendly and noticeably willing to help you get the most out of your visit. For example, we hadn’t seen any Donkey’s, so I asked Within minutes we were whisked behind the scenes to meet their Donkey duo grazing on lush grass in their front garden - very helpful. They offer $1 cups of animal feed, which I strongly recommend because it persuades many of the animals to come right up and be fed from the hand. Bambi was a particular delight, allowing us to stroke her while she was fed - what a treat to be so near to her. With well over one hundred animals, there’s never a dull moment as you wander round the site. The park is split into four large paddocks for the bigger animals, plus other areas and large cages for the smallest animals. You can stay as long as you like, which was refreshing. I guess the range of babies and youngsters varies with the time of year. During our summer visit we had the pleasure of meeting: gosling, ducklings, guinea pigs, lambs, rabbits and chicks. Apparently, they have piglets and a donkey due any day! Sometimes they have animals needing bottle feeding - but none the day we visited. They’ve gorgeous thick rimu wood picnic benches and a small on-site café. It was a treat sitting out enjoying the magnificent view of Mt Fyffe, still with a small amount of snow at the top. During our drinks break, staff had readied a pony with a saddle. Both our children loved their short ride, with an attentive member of staff taking them round and making sure everything was ok - and it was FREE. Just before leaving, one of their guides brought a Llama Trek back into the park. The customers were grinning ear-to-ear, and couldn’t stop marvelling at the experience. It was fascinating watching the llamas being striped of their trekking saddles, bags and equipment; then released back into the field with their mates - what a bonus! Afterwards, we all selected our favourite animal. Our daughter chose Bambi, a small two-year old Fallow Deer; Our son remembered the Goats more than any other animal; I chose Jess their affectionate female Border Collie; my husband liked Marmalade their cream coloured Kune-Kune pig (who was heavily pregnant at the time!) It’s now a few weeks later and the kids are still talking about their Farm Park visit in Kaikoura. Since then we’ve been to loads of places, but none have stuck in our children’s minds like the hands-on, intimate, animal experience they enjoyed at the Kaikoura Farm Park. (A place enjoyed by us thirty-something’s too I must add!)
