LYNN — It’s a place where fun happens, but Camp Fire North Shore is also part of a nation- wide alliance of after-school programs commit- ted to keep students safe and healthy. With a variety of programs, including extend- ed-day programs based in Lynn and Salem schools, Camp Fire shares the 8,000-member Afterschool Alliance’s goal of keeping kids safe and healthy, inspiring them to learn and giving parents peace of mind that their children are safe, supervised and learning after the school day ends. Camp Fire North Shore serves over 240 Lynn and Salem students with before- and after-school programs. From the first day of school in September until the last day of school in June, Camp Fire staff are helping with homework, running fun enrichment activities from gardening to STEM (Science, Engineer- ing, Mathematics and Technology) to arts and crafts. According to a Camp Fire press release, stu- dents join Camp Fire’s programs, which are run right at the schools that enrolled children attend, for a variety of reasons: They need ad- ditional academic support, they are exposed to new and engaging activities, they gain so- cial-emotional skills by being with their peers, and they have a safe place to be while parents and guardians are at work. “The healthy habits after-school programs in- still in children and youth can last a lifetime,” said Afterschool Alliance Executive Director Jodi Grant. ©2017 AccuWeather, Inc. SPORTS B SATURDAY, OCTOBER 28, 2017 Missed chances spell trouble for Rams football By Harold Rivera ITEM STAFF LYNN — Friday night’s Division 3 North quarter nal game between the No. 3 Classical and No. 6 Danvers football teams at Manning Field was billed as one to keep an eye out for. The two NEC foes met three weeks ago at Danvers, resulting in a Classical win that knocked the Falcons off the ranks of the unbeaten. This time around, the Falcons got their revenge with a 21-7 win. “The playoffs are a different ballgame and at any level it's tough to beat a team twice," Classical (6-2) coach Brian Vaughan said. "We knew that going in. Penalties hurt us early on and put us in tough situations. Turn- overs hurt us early on and put us in tough situations. We tried to battle back and we just weren't able to do it." The two teams got off to polar opposite starts. After a scoreless rst quarter, Danvers (6-2) found the end zone twice to take a 14-0 lead at halftime. Danvers quarter- back Justin Mullaney scored on a one-yard keeper and Tahg Coakley converted a Rams fumble into a 17-yard touchdown run. Zach Dillon split the uprights on both PAT kicks. RAMS, B2
