  • JOSE De JUAN MARTINEZ' METODO DE CLARIN (1830)
92 HISTORIC BRASS SOCIETY JOURNAL JOSE de JUAN MARTINEZ' METODO DE CLARIN (1830) Introduction and translation by B. Kenyon de Pascual INTRODUCTION ince most readers will not be familiar with the history and terminology of Spanish brass instruments, it would seem appropriate to introduce Jose de Juan's tutor in its Spanish context. The first point that may usefully be considered is the type of S clarin instrument for which the work was written. The Spanish word has been used for a variety of instruments at different times in the past. It is first to be met with in the literature of the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Its use was recorded in the 16th century for processions and bullfights but not for sounding the seven army calls. These were the prerogative of the trumpeters of the Italian school (tromp etas italianos), who were examined by the guild. In the definitions for clarin and bastardo to be found in S. Covarrubias's dictionary Tesoro de la lengua castellana o espanola (Madrid, 1611) the c/arin is described as a small, high-pitched trumpet with a clear and delicate sound. When players using clarino technique reached Spain in the 17th (?) century, they and their instruments were also called clarines. The first cLirin to be officially appointed to the Spanish Chapel Royal was Josef Losqui, or Loschi, described as a Venetian. He was given the post in 1679 (with the obligation to teach interested choirboys) and was succeeded in 1697 by his Spanish pupil and son-in-law, Gregorio Fernandez de la Cuerda.

THE COMMISSIONED FLUTE CHOIR PIECES PRESENTED BY UNIVERSITY/COLLEGE FLUTE CHOIRS AND NFA SPONSORED FLUTE CHOIRS AT NATIONAL FLUTE ASSOCIATION ANNUAL CONVENTIONS WITH A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE FLUTE CHOIR AND ITS REPERTOIRE DOCUMENT Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Musical Arts in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Yoon Hee Kim Graduate Program in Music The Ohio State University 2013 D.M.A. Document Committee: Katherine Borst Jones, Advisor Dr. Russel C. Mikkelson Dr. Charles M. Atkinson Karen Pierson Copyright by Yoon Hee Kim 2013 Abstract The National Flute Association (NFA) sponsors a range of non-performance and performance competitions for performers of all ages. Non-performance competitions are: a Flute Choir Composition Competition, Graduate Research, and Newly Published Music. Performance competitions are: Young Artist Competition, High School Soloist Competition, Convention Performers Competition, Flute Choirs Competitions, Professional, Collegiate, High School, and Jazz Flute Big Band, and a Masterclass Competition. These competitions provide opportunities for flutists ranging from amateurs to professionals. University/college flute choirs perform original manuscripts, arrangements and transcriptions, as well as the commissioned pieces, frequently at conventions, thus expanding substantially the repertoire for flute choir. The purpose of my work is to document commissioned repertoire for flute choir, music for five or more flutes, presented by university/college flute choirs and NFA sponsored flute choirs at NFA annual conventions. Composer, title, premiere and publication information, conductor, performer and instrumentation will be included in an annotated bibliography format. A brief history of the flute choir and its repertoire, as well as a history of NFA-sponsored flute choir (1973–2012) will be included in this document.

  • Instruments of the Orchestra
INSTRUMENTS OF THE ORCHESTRA String Family WHAT: Wooden, hollow-bodied instruments strung with metal strings across a bridge. WHERE: Find this family in the front of the orchestra and along the right side. HOW: Sound is produced by a vibrating string that is bowed with a bow made of horse tail hair. The air then resonates in the hollow body. Other playing techniques include pizzicato (plucking the strings), col legno (playing with the wooden part of the bow), and double-stopping (bowing two strings at once). WHY: Composers use these instruments for their singing quality and depth of sound. HOW MANY: There are four sizes of stringed instruments: violin, viola, cello and bass. A total of forty-four are used in full orchestras. The string family is the largest family in the orchestra, accounting for over half of the total number of musicians on stage. The string instruments all have carved, hollow, wooden bodies with four strings running from top to bottom. The instruments have basically the same shape but vary in size, from the smaller VIOLINS and VIOLAS, which are played by being held firmly under the chin and either bowed or plucked, to the larger CELLOS and BASSES, which stand on the floor, supported by a long rod called an end pin. The cello is always played in a seated position, while the bass is so large that a musician must stand or sit on a very high stool in order to play it. These stringed instruments developed from an older instrument called the viol, which had six strings.

The Physics of Musical Instruments Class Notes – October 24 Pipes with holes; Recorders, flutes The Physics of Musical Instruments – Fall 2017 – October 24 – 1 Topics • More on acoustic impedance • The end correction for a flute or recorder • The effect of a side hole • The flute – a pipe open at both ends with side holes The Physics of Musical Instruments – Fall 2017 – October 24 – 2 More Complex Pipes • We are now beginning to consider more complex pipes and air resonators – Bottles, blown across the top (fun stuff) but more seriously… – Bells at the end (why?) – Pipes with finger holes – And, eventually, pipes with non-cylindrical bores • The concept of acoustic impedance is very helpful here, even without getting highly quantitative. The Physics of Musical Instruments – Fall 2017 – October 24 – 3 Energy Transfer • When the impedance changes along an acoustic pipe, there can be a reflection • If one of the impedances is exactly zero, ALL OF THE ENERGY IS REFLECTED. • We used this idea to analyze the open end of an ideal pipe The Physics of Musical Instruments – Fall 2017 – October 24 – 4 A Finite Discontinuity • Consider a discontinuity in pipe radius • Energy reflection in this case is 1/9 or 11% The Physics of Musical Instruments – Fall 2017 – October 24 – 5 Add a Transition Piece • With a transition segment added, the impedance discontinuity is reduced, and there is less reflection • Only 6% is reflected The Physics of Musical Instruments – Fall 2017 – October 24 – 6 A Tapered Transition • The impedance is lowered gradually left
