Memorial to Carlos Schubert 1938-1994 THO M A S W. DONNELLY Dept, o f Geological Sciences, State University o f New York, Binghamton, NY 13902-6000 Friends of Carlos Schubert Paetow were shocked and saddened upon hearing of his death in Caracas, Venezuela, on July 22, 1994, following an aneurism and a mesenteric stroke. Carlos, a longtime Fellow of the Geological Society of America, was one of the dominant figures of Venezuelan geology, specializing in his later years in neotectonics and in Quaternary geology. His untimely passing leaves a large void in Latin American—and in Quaternary—geology. His publications were voluminous and spanned a wide range of topics, but dominantly centered in Venezuelan studies. Carlos was bom in Hamburg, Germany, on October 9, 1938, and went to Caracas as an infant. He had a youthful interest in many subjects, but not especially in geology. His decision to pursue this field was the result of parental advice that geology and chemistry were the major fields of the future. Because he was uncom fortable with chemistry, he chose geology. Undoubtedly one of his important inspirations was the German explorer Alexander von Humboldt. Indeed, one of Carlos’s most prized possessions was his German 1815 edition of Humboldt’s Travels. In much of Carlos’s later work we can find a thread linking him to the founder of South American earth science. When he completed his high school studies in Caracas in 1957, he faced the problem that Pérez Jiménez, the president of Venezuela, had closed all Venezuelan universities. Fortunately, Carlos was awarded a scholarship from the Shell Oil Company to attend the University of Arizona, where he received his bachelor’s degree in geology in 1961. -

Belkin and Peter C. Cornillon Abstract. Oceanic fronts shape marine ecosystems; therefore front mapping and characterization is one of the most important aspects of physical oceanography. Here we report on the first effort to map and describe all major fronts in the World Ocean’s Large Marine Ecosystems (LMEs). Apart from a geographical review, these fronts are classified according to their origin and physical mechanisms that maintain them. This first-ever zero-order pattern of the LME fronts is based on a unique global frontal data base assembled at the University of Rhode Island. Thermal fronts were automatically derived from 12 years (1985-1996) of twice-daily satellite 9-km resolution global AVHRR SST fields with the Cayula-Cornillon front detection algorithm. These frontal maps serve as guidance in using hydrographic data to explore subsurface thermohaline fronts, whose surface thermal signatures have been mapped from space. Our most recent study of chlorophyll fronts in the Northwest Atlantic from high-resolution 1-km data (Belkin and O’Reilly, 2007) revealed a close spatial association between chlorophyll fronts and SST fronts, suggesting causative links between these two types of fronts. Venezuela Location Venezuela, officially the Republic of Venezuela, is a republic (1995 est. pop. 21,005,000), 352,143 sq mi. (912,050 sq. km), in the northern part of South America. With the Caribbean Sea in the north, Venezuela has a coastline of 1,750 long. It is bordered on the south by Brazil, on the west and southwest by Colombia, and on the east by Guyana. Dependencies include Margarita Island, Tortuga Island, and many smaller island groups in the Caribbean. Caracas is the capital and also the largest city in Venezuela. Geography Venezuela, a third larger than Texas, occupies most of the northern coast of South America on the Caribbean Sea. Mountain systems break Venezuela into four distinct areas: (1) the Maracaibo lowlands; (2) the mountainous region in the north and northwest; (3) the Orinoco basin, with the llanos (vast grass-covered plains) on its northern border and great forest areas in the south and southeast, and (4) the Guiana Highlands, south of the Orinoco, accounting for nearly half the national territory. Food The food in Venezuela is generally easy and flavorful. Caracas, the capital of Venezuela, claims to have a greater variety of restaurants than any other South American city, and it would certainly be a pleasure to try and prove it, even if you failed. Venezuelan cooking has European, indigenous, and African roots – a heterodox cuisine formed over the centuries by immigrants. Toussaint In this paper the Spanish Main is taken to refer to the broad area stretching from Mexico to the southern tip of South America, only part of which was affected by East Indian immigration1. Until recently, little research was done regarding migration from the Caribbean to South America. A largely unexplored dimension of this phenomenon is the late nineteenth-century illegal migration of a number of Indian immigrant labourers who had been brought to the Caribbean under indenture contracts. This paper seeks to bring this migration phenomenon into focus. It examines the circumstances surrounding the illegal emigration of these Indians to the South American mainland, their experience there and the British government’s handling of this problem. Also discussed is the cultural impact of those Indian immigrants who remained on the mainland. The overall number of Indian emigrants is unknown and undoubtedly small. Ours, however, is a qualitative rather than quantitative discourse, intended to broaden the context and scope of Indian migration, and our appreciation of the myriad dimensions of their diaspora. Theoretical and Epistemological Issues There are two fundamental and reciprocating nuances to Caribbean migration historiography. Firstly, it emphasizes the movement of labour, whether forced or voluntary. Secondly, from this, historical enquiry remains focused on in-migration to the region. Out-migration, significant as part of the Caribbean experience from the inception of European and Caribbean contact, has been studied as an afterthought. One result is that the complexity of Caribbean migration has been significantly obscured2. -

Pedro Morales is a pioneer of digital art in Venezuela. “La Mirada”, (The Gaze), ca. 1989, is one of the first works of digital art documented in the region, pushing the aesthetic limits of what was starting to be known as “virtual reality”. Morales was honored with the Research in the Arts Award at Salón Arturo Michelena in 1991, arguably Venezuela’s most prestigious art competition. His work has been in individual exhibits at the Sofia Imber Museum of Contemporary Art and the Alejandro Otero Muesum, both in Caracas; In 1994 received the FAMA Award, granted by the Polar Foundation Fund for The Arts; and the Grand Prize in the 20th Salon de Aragua, another national prestigious meet (1995). He has participated in Prix Ars Electronica in Linz, Austria (2002, 2005). Morales represented Venezuela in the 50 th Venice Biennale exhibition “The Dictatorship of the Viewer” (2003) with an iconic work “City Rooms”, censored by the government of his country. It was however viewed (navigated) by thousands of people online. “City Rooms” is a high point in his career and a landmark for Venezuelan early XXI Century art. For more than two decades Morales’ research on the beauty inherent in geometric shapes has maintained an intimate focus, using everyday household items and events as background for his digital work. He turns to fractal geometry to show his mosaics, the home he means to portray, exploring the beauty of geometric forms created with an utilitarian purpose. Pedro Morales has explored his vision of the picture within the picture using stereography. -

Boletín de Geología, 43(1), 53-75. https://doi.org/10.18273/revbol.v43n1-2021003 Resumen La secuencia de rocas volcánicas y volcano-sedimentarias reportadas en el segmento superior de la Formación Bocas, subyacen sedimentos rojos de la Formación Jordán, está constituida por derrames de lavas máficas a intermedias y rocas piroclásticas félsicas interestratificadas con lodolitas, areniscas y areniscas tobáceas. En este trabajo se exponen nuevos datos de campo, petrográficos y geoquímicos de una secuencia volcánica máfica y volcanoclástica félsica. En cercanías al corregimiento Las Bocas, las rocas básicas presentan bajos contenidos TiO2 (1,04 - 1,65% peso) y P2O5 (0,3 - 0,7% peso) y altos contenidos de Al2O3 (15,79 - 15,92% peso), dentro de las series toleíticas; estas rocas se caracterizan por tener un leve enriquecimiento de LREE, anomalías positivas en Th, U y Zr y anomalías negativas en Nb, Ta y Ti con tendencias de ambiente MORB. Las rocas félsicas que corresponden a rocas piroclásticas de composición riolítica están enriquecidas en álcalis y LREE con anomalías negativas Ba, Sr, Nb, Ta y Ti y enriquecimiento moderado en LREE con un patrón característicos de intraplaca. -

(I hnstitut Franqais du PCtrole, BP3 1 1, 92506 Rueil-Malmaison, France (2)~ntevep,Apartado 76343, Caracas 1070-A, Venezuela (3)~eicipFranlab, 92506 Rueil-Malmaison, France KEY WORDS: Venezuela, Merida Andes, tectonic inversion, crustal scale balanced sections INTRODUCTION Unlike the adjacent Caribbean and Central Andean orogens, the Merida Andes (Fig. 1) do not relate to direct interactions between the South American craton and either arc terranes or oceanic domains, but represent only minor intraplate readjustements between the Eastern Cordillera in the south and the South Caribbean transform margin in the north.Although no deep seismic profiling has yet been attempted across the Venezuelan Andes, a large set of conventional seismic reflection profiles has been recorded by the petroleum industry in the Maracaibo and Barinas-Apure basins, respectively along the North and South Andean foothills. In addition, isolated refraction and magnetotelluric data are available. However, only the gravimetric coverage is really complete, thus providing a relatively coherent image of the basement architecture. STRUCTURE OF THE SOUTH ANDEAN FLANK The Barinas-Apure basin extends from the Andean foothills in the northwest to the Guyana shield in the southeast, thus encompassing most of the drainage area of the Rio Apure, a tributary of the Orinoco River. Southwards, it connects directly with the Llanos basin in Colombia. The Barinas basin hardly compares with a flexural basin. It is largely dominated by either north- or south-verging basement- involved structures. -

The Yariguíes Anticlinorium, a regional structure located at the western flank of the Eastern Cordillera of Colombia, includes the thickest record of continental sedimentary rocks accumulated near to the Jurassic-Cretaceous boundary. The sedimentary rocks are lithoarenites and feldspathic arenites, grouped in the Girón Formation, and deposited in a Late Jurassic extensional basin interpreted in this work as a rift basin. We analysed the sedimentologic and compositional characteristics of two sections that accumulated in a complex rift system. We identified important thickness variations, from 3,350 m in the type section to at least 525 m in a reference section in the Zapatoca area, as well as petrographic and lithofacies changes. This led us to confirm that the Girón Formation encompasses all the continental facies, whose source rock correspond mainly to the exhumed blocks of the Santander Massif during the Late Jurassic. The synrift successions were segmented by transverse structures and regional longitudinal faults of the rift-shoulder, as the Suárez Fault. The tectonic frame of the study area shows the relevance of the W-E compressional regimes, explaining the local kinematics as a heritage of the former configuration and tectonic inversion of the basins. -

ABSTRACT The Maracaibo’s Lake is a basin located in the western side of Venezuela and supports an important agricultural and industrial activity. This basin is a core of the petroleum industry since the 20th century. Oil activities had develop a ecological disorder, which a sign of primary manifestation were a cultural eutrophication process related to the phytoplankton blooms in the middles 70’s, and more recently, since 2004 an extensive covered area of Lemna obscura . It seems that change in the hydrological cycles and input of pollutants are the reasons of this macrophyte appearance. In this research, the spectral signature of Lemna obscura is evaluated using MODIS images from 2000 to 2010. Other program as ENVI 4.3 has been considerate to correlate hydrological data with Lemna obscura bloom. Spectral signature appearance of Lemna obscura could be a consequence and indicates changes in the hydrological and ecological features in Maracaibo´s Lake. These actions have impact environmental cost that it has accelerated and intensified in recent decades (Hernandez et al, 2003).
