Guggenheim Museum and Dior Announce 2017 Guggenheim International Gala Honorees and Pre-Party Performance by HAIM Benefit events on November 15 and 16 will honor visionary artist Cai Guo-Qiang, former President of Guggenheim Board of Trustees Jennifer Blei Stockman, and UBS, in recognition of its collaboration on the Guggenheim UBS MAP Global Art Initiative. The 2017 Guggenheim International Gala is made possible by Dior. (NEW YORK, NY—September 18, 2017)—The 2017 Guggenheim International Gala (GIG) on November 15 and 16 in the museum’s landmark building will celebrate the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation’s 80th anniversary by recognizing pioneering artists and arts patrons that embody its forward-looking identity. The festivities kick off on November 15 with a special Pre-Party performance by HAIM, whose 2017 critically acclaimed album, Something to Tell You, debuted in the top ten of the Billboard 200. A benefit dinner on Thursday, November 16, will follow, honoring visionary artist Cai Guo-Qiang, known for his groundbreaking and extraordinary multimedia artwork; Jennifer Blei Stockman, who served as president of the Guggenheim Board of Trustees for twelve years; and UBS, in recognition of the Guggenheim UBS MAP Global Art Initiative, a global contemporary art collaboration. Dancer Daniil Simkin will perform an excerpt from his Works & Process at the Guggenheim–commissioned production, Falls the Shadow, featuring costume design by Maria Grazia Chiuri, Artistic Director of Dior. Proceeds from the GIG contribute to the Guggenheim Museum’s general operating fund, which advances a range of internationally acclaimed exhibitions and educational programs, supports stewardship of the Guggenheim’s singular collection of modern and contemporary works of art, and provides for the care of the museum’s landmark Frank Lloyd Wright–designed building. Gala Co-Chairs include Christina and Robert Baker, Maria Grazia Chiuri, Valerie and Charles Diker, Wendy Fisher and Dennis Goodman, Phyllis and William Mack, Nancy and Howard Marks, Lauren Baker Pinkus and Scott Pinkus, Pilar Crespi Robert and Stephen Robert, Denise and Andrew Saul, and Sidney Toledano. Tickets to the GIG Pre-Party on November 15 include a performance by HAIM, a full open bar, and an opportunity to view a selection of works from Art and China after 1989: Theater of the World, an interpretive survey of experimental Chinese art from 1989 to 2008. Tickets are $225 for members and $250 general admission. A one-year membership to the Guggenheim Young Collectors Council (YCC) may be combined with an individual ticket to the Pre-Party for the discounted price of $750. The event has a limited capacity. Even these songs probably sounded ten times better in the studio when we recorded ’em. CDs are small. There’s no stature to it.     Is This Jazz? Newport Jazz Festival ’17 Cecile McLorin Salvant, credit: Norman Grant The jazz world descended upon Newport to see some of the music’s legends as well as many of its rising stars. As is always the case with such events, the hardest part of the weekend was catching a significant portion of each great set before running full speed to another stage to try and catch the next historic moment that could be unfolding. It was tough to get it all in, but here are some of the highlights. The festival kicked off Friday with a stellar set from the Jimmy Greene Quartet on the Fort stage. Greene — the saxophonist and band leader — took his quartet through a set of terrific originals, including the flowing groove of “Second Breakfast” off his latest release Flowers. Later on, Cecile McLorin Salvant and the Aaron Diehl Trio took the stage and shattered minds with their beautiful and complex arrangements, including her profound version of “Wives And Lovers.” Having a soft spot for the New Orleans clarinet style, Evan Christopher’s Clarinet Road & New Orleans Brass was a much- appreciated addition to the Quad stage with a killer band, locked-in swing and loose group improvisations. The day closed out with Joey DeFrancesco + The People, who were by far the funkiest, most swinging band of the day. DeFrancesco is a monster organ player who demonstrated why he has redefined how the instrument is approached. After leaving the Fort I headed over to watch Rhiannon Giddens and Trombone Shorty each play very different, but equally excellent sets at the Tennis Hall of Fame.

From the 1930’s through today this rustic dive bar has seen more than its share of the famous and the infamous. It’s a little joint called Capt. Tony’s in Key West, Florida. Eighty-seven-year-old Anthony ‘Capt. Tony’ Tarracino has been the owner and proprietor of this boozy establishment since 1959. It seems Tony, as a young mobster, got himself into some serious trouble with ‘the family’ back in New Jersey and needed to lay low for a while. In those days, the mosquito invested ‘keys’ (or islands) on the southernmost end of Florida’s coastline was a fine place for wise guys on the lam to hide out. And this was well before the tee-shirt shops, restaurants, bars, art galleries, charming B&B’s and quaint hotels turned Key West into a serious year-round tourist destination. Sure, there were some ‘artsy’ types like Hemingway and Tennessee Williams living in Key West during the late 50’s when Tony bought the bar, but it was a seaside shanty town where muscular hard-working men in shrimp boats and cutters fished all day for a living.

    Introduction to Music Unit for grades K-2 on Variations on “Ah vous dirai-je, maman” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Dr. Kay Edwards, Miami University Unit Length There are 3 lessons in this unit for grades K-2. Lesson plans are designed for class periods of approximately 30-40 minutes. Teachers will need to adapt the lesson plans to fit their school resources and the individual needs of their students. Lesson Use These 3 lessons are designed for use by general music teachers. However, portions of the lessons could be used by classroom teachers as well. Standards National Standards for Music are indicated on each lesson. The 3 lessons combined address 7 of the 9 National Standards (all except #4 and #5). The Ohio Standards for Music are indicated on each lesson also. Music teachers in other states can easily match their standards to those in this Unit. The 3 lessons combined address all of the 5 Ohio Content Standards. Multiple Intelligences These lessons facilitate musical, bodily-kinesthetic, linguistic, interpersonal, and intrapersonal intelligence, 4 of the 7 intelligences originally identified by Howard Gardner. Overview Music Concepts and Objectives/Outcomes are indicated on each lesson. Over the 3 lessons, the Concept Areas of Rhythm, Melody, Harmony, Form, and Tone Color are used. Skills developed over the 3 lessons are Singing, Moving, Listening, Playing Instruments, Creating, and Analyzing/Relating music to other subject areas such as history and literature. Lesson #1: Move to the Music of Mozart Lesson #2: Melody and Harmony Lesson #3: Moving to Mozart’s Variations Prior Knowledge No prior knowledge on the part of the student is needed, although it is helpful to have had experience keeping a steady beat, movement, or experience playing unpitched percussion instruments.
