Revelation- Chapters 17 to 22, the Parousia (Royal Coming) Revelation- Chapters 17 to 22, The Parousia (Royal Coming) Judgment of Prostitute/Harlot and the Beast- Revelation 17:1-18 • The great prostitute = the false prophet of chapter 16 = the beast from the earth (2nd) of chapter 13. This prostitute represents religious power that is contrary to Christ (all false religions and spirituality, false Christianity, and the apostate church). She appears attractive and entices all to come to her. But she is the enemy of Christ and the true Church and tries to destroy Christ’s Church. • Apostasy and Idolatry are often spoken of in the Scriptures as in terms of adultery and other forms of sexual immorality. • See Hosea 4:10-15. See Leviticus 18 and 20 where God speaks out against such pagan practices and deals out punishments. • The beast, which the prostitute rides, the first one from the sea, with the 7 heads and 10 horns represents social/political/economic power contrary to Christ. • Verse 9- 7 heads are 7 mountains/hills; this is a reference to the 7 hills of Rome. • Verse 10- 7 kings (some have tried to identify with specific Roman Emperors like Nero and Domitian and others with vary lists of the Emperors and kings), but 7 is here symbolic of all earthly powers and rulers who claim spiritual authority by which they justify and sanction their despotic dominion over their subjects and in particular against the Church of Christ through out time until Christ returns. • Verse 14- Christ The Lamb is Victorious! The Fall of Babylon & Rejoicing of the Saints- Revelation 18:1-24 • Verses 1-8- The prostitute, Babylon (Rome at the time John wrote) receives her final judgment and God’s people are called out from her. • Verses 9-19- The kings of the earth lament over Fallen Babylon. • Verses 20-24- The Saints of God rejoice that Babylon is judged! A Song of Victory and the Marriage Feast of the Lamb- Revelation 19:1-10 • Verses 1-4- The hallelujah chorus praise God for His salvation and victory! • Verse 5- A call for all God’s people to Worship • Verse 6-10- The Marriage Feast of the Lamb. The Lord’s Supper is a foretaste and participation in this great end time feast! o Mt 9:15 (Mk 2:19; Lk 5:34) refer to Jesus as the bridegroom. o Mt 22:2-14- is kingdom parable of a wedding feast. o Eph 5:22-33 compares marriage to relationship between Christ and the Church. The Second Coming of Christ at the End- Revelation 19:11-21 • Verses 11- 16 tell of the appearing of the Word of God (see John 1); the King of kings and Lord of lords! • Verses 17-21 summarize the concluding warfare. 1 The Millennium/The New Testament Era- Revelation 20:1-6 This section covers some events that we have already seen referenced to already in the Three 7-fold Visions. • Key- the key appears in 1:18 & 3:7 in the hands of Jesus as the One with ultimate authority to bind and loose. Here an angel is given this key to the “bottomless pit” or the Abyss (a temporary holding place for demons until the End, see Luke 8:31 & 2Peter 2:4- contrast with Rev. 20:10). o Contrast this with Rev. 9 where Satan is given the key to the shaft of the bottomless pit. • Binding of Satan- the holding back of Satan and his demons from accusing, lying, deceiving, and destroying God’s people; God’s people are free in Christ! Though he still is dangerous and seeks to devour where he can (1Peter 5:8-9). o This took place during the life of ministry of Jesus Christ culminating in His death, resurrection, and ascension. o In Matthew 12:22-32, Jesus speaks of the binding of Satan in reference to His ministry, when He is accused of casting out demons by Satan’s power (this is also found in Mark 3:22-30 and Luke 11:14-23). o In John 12:31-32, Jesus speaks of casting out Satan. o See Rev. 12:5-17- Satan is cast out from before the throne of God and Christ has ascended to be our Advocate. • Thousand years- not a literal 1,000 years, but symbolic for a complete period of time marking the time of Christ’s first “Advent” until His second “Advent.” o 10 x 10 x 10= 1,0000. It has been symbolic for completeness in other Jewish literature o Read 2 Peter 3:8 and Psalm 90:4- these are the only other direct uses of 1000 years in the Bible. But Psalm 50:10 & Isaiah 7:23 use “thousand” to convey sense of completeness. • 1st Resurrection- the whole people of God have experienced the 1st Resurrection at conversion to Christ; a “spiritual resurrection” in which they were raised from the deadness of sin and transgressions; those who share in the first resurrection will not be overcome by the 2nd Death (this is eternal separation from God in Hell or the Lake of Fire Rev. 20:14). o Read John 5:19-30; 11:25-26 o Read Romans 6:1-11; Ephesians 2:1-6; Colossians 2:11-13 & 3:1-4 Battle of Gog and Magog and the Final Doom of Satan- Revelation 20:7-10 • Satan is released for a final assault as pictured in the Three 7-fold Visions. • Gog and Magog- symbolize evil forces, people, and nations who are against God and His people. 2 o See Ezekiel 39 and 39- God says that they will rise up against His people Israel in the later days so that the nations may know Yahweh as the One who delivers Israel and vindicates His holiness. • Why will God permit this final fling of destruction by Satan? o God will be Glorified as the One Who Saves the Church and gets rid of Satan. o The Church, the people of God in Christ will follow in Christ’s Way- Suffering 1st and then Glory. The Bodily Resurrection and the Last Judgment- Revelation 20:11-15 • “Him who was seated on the throne”- the Father; see Rev. 5:6-7 or the Son Jesus Christ the Lamb; see John 5:22-23; Matthew 25:31-46; 2 Corinthians 5:10; and Romans 14:10. o The authority to Judge belongs to God the Father, who has given this authority to His Son Jesus Christ, who suffered and died for all humanity’s sin. The Father and Son are One and act together in this as in all things. o See John 5:19; 10:30; and Rev. 6:15-17. • “Book of Deeds”- the record of the things done by a person good or evil by which people will be judged by God. Unbelievers will be judged by all their evil deeds. Believers are covered by Christ thus only their deeds done in Christ, in faith and love are recorded. o See also Matthew 25:31-46. • “Book of Life”- the record of those who belong to Christ, the faithful who are covered by the Blood of the Lamb and will receive eternal life; these are those who have faith in Christ. o See Rev. 3:5; 7:9-17 • “Death and Hades gave up the dead”- this refers to the universal bodily resurrection at the end. Those in Christ to Eternal Life in a New Heavens and New Earth. Those not in Christ to the Lake of Fire. o 1 Corinthians 15 also gives a great presentation of the bodily resurrection of Christians. • “The Lake of Fire”- the second death; eternal judgment and suffering. 3 The New Heaven and the New Earth- Revelation 21:1-8 • A New Creation, a new physical reality! • God dwells with man; they are His people; and God will be with them as God! (John 1:14 God Tabernacles with His people) • God will wipe away all tears! • Death no more! No mourning, no crying, no pain! • The former things have passed away! • Verse 8 describes the unbelievers judged by their deeds. The New Jerusalem- Revelation 21:9-27 • New Jerusalem is the Bride of Christ = all the people of God in Christ = the Church! • How is she described? • The Temple and Light of the New Jerusalem are God and the Lamb! The Garden Restored- Revelation 22:1-5 • See Genesis 2. • See John 4:10-14 on the “water of life” and Ezekiel 47:1-12 The Epilogue- Revelation 22:6-21 • “These Words are Trustworthy and True!” • “And behold, I am coming soon. Blessed is the one who keeps the words of the prophecy of this book.” (Jesus is speaking this). • The prophetic message of the book is recounted- Repent, turn away from sin AND Trust in Christ for the forgiveness of sins and eternal life. 4 .

  • Rev 20 Classnotes 2020
Revelation Notes 2020 - Laurelwood 85 "The Heart Response to a Perfect Earth" Revelation 20 After the tribulation on the earth and the return of the King to the earth to destroy all the kings of the earth, Jesus will set up His earthly kingdom and rule over the whole world in perfect conditions on the earth. JESUS CHRIST WILL REIGN ON THE EARTH FOR 1000 YEARS, 20:1-15 The transition between Revelation 19 and Revelation 20 is the transition to the fulfillment of the Abrahamic contract and the completion of the kingdom program of God. The kingdoms of this world become the kingdom of our Lord (Revelation 11:15), the King of Kings and Lord of lords (Revelation 19:16). He will reign for 1000 years and then comes the end, when He delivers the kingdom up to the Father (1 Corinthians 15:23-28) so that God may be all in all. Excursus 1: Review of Eschatological Frameworks Three theological grids: the postmillennial, the amillennial, and the premillennial take their names and point of departure from Revelation 20:1-8, where Christ is said to reign 1,000 years, a period which has been called the “millennium.” The word “millennium” comes from the Latin word for 1000. The Greek word for “1000” is χιλιοι chilioi, from which chiliasm is derived. For further study of these three different theological positions, see J. Dwight Pentecost, Things to Come, chapter 22 (XXII). A. Postmillennialism The postmillennial school interprets the millennium to be a period (may be a distinct 1000 year period) of great spiritual blessing fulfilling millennial promises accomplished through preaching the gospel to everyone.

  • The End Times
The End Times Today, more than any other time in history, events are being played out on the world stage that will bring an end to our current times. These are more commonly referred to as The End Times or The Last Days. World events such as the rebirth of Israel in 1948 and the regathering of the Jewish people back into the land, conflicts and tensions in the Middle East, an increase of wickedness and evil, an increase of knowledge, nations that are blatantly anti-Israel and the instability of Russia as well as economic and technological advances that make possible events described in the Bible, that 100 years ago would have been inconceivable. These signs exhort us to be like the five wise virgins in (Matthew 25:1-13) that kept theirs lamps full and their wicks trimmed as they waited and watched for their Lords return. Jesus rebuked the Pharisees for not discerning the times (Matthew 16:1-3) and to the disciples He spoke the parable of the fig tree about discerning the times (Luke 21:29-33). Let’s take a closer look at some of the signs that point to the soon coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. We see leaps in technological advances such as nuclear missile strike capability and satellite technologies that allow us to see real time events halfway around the world which were impossible one-hundred years ago. Calls for a global economic system, a “world currency” and a one world government also demonstrate that we are closer to the end times then ever before.

  • The Chronology of Revelation 19—20
Session #5 The Chronology of Revelation 19—20 The Expositors Seminary Super Seminar—April 8–9, 2016 I. Introduction § Key Question: Do the events of Rev 20:1–6 follow the events of Rev 19:11–21? OR Does Rev 20 take the reader back to the beginning of the NT era so that verses 1–6 describe the present age? Comparison of Views Ø The Sequential View of Premillennialism The Millennium of Rev 20 ____________ the Second Coming of Rev 19 Ø The Recapitulation View of Amillennialism The Millennium of Rev 20 ____________ the Second Coming of Rev 19 II. The Sequential View of Premillennialism A. The Introductory “And I Saw” (Rev 20:1) § Used _______ in Book of Revelation § Almost always introduces _______________ ________________ § Argument is _______________ but places burden of proof on amillennial view B. The Content of the Visions (Rev 20:1–6) § The binding of Satan is ____________ (not present) § The first resurrection is ____________ (not spiritual) § The thousand years is ____________ (not symbolic) Ø Therefore: The chronology of Rev 19-20 must be ________________! 19 C. The Use of “Any Longer” (Rev 20:3) § Rev 12–19 repeatedly highlights the satanic deception of the nations in the second half of the Tribulation (12:9; 13:14; 16:14; 18:23; 19:19–20). § Satan is then locked in the abyss “so that he would not deceive the nations any longer” (Rev 20:3), which indicates the interruption of a deception that was already taking place. § This connection indicates a historical progression in which the binding of Rev 20 is designed to halt the deception described in Rev 12–19.

Andrews University Seminary Studies, Vol. 43, No. 1,185-210. Copyright 0 2005 Andrews University Press. AMILLENNIALISM RECONSIDERED BEATRICES. NEALL Union College Lincoln, Nebraska Introduction G. K. Beale's latest commentary on Revelation and Kim Riddlebarger's new book A Casefor Ami~~ennialismhave renewed interest in the debate on the nature of the millennium.' Amillennialism has an illustrious history of support from Augustine, theologians of the Calvinistic and ~utheran confessions, and a long line of Reformed theologians such as Abraham Kuyper, Amin Vos, H. Ridderbos, A. A. Hoekema, and M. G. line? Amillennialists recognize that a straightforward reading of the text seems to show "the chronologicalp'ogression of Rev 19-20, the futurity of Satan's imprisonment, the physicality of 'the first resurrection' and the literalness of the one thousand years" (emphasis supplied).) However, they do not accept a chronologicalprogression of the events in these chapters, preferring instead to understand the events as recapitulatory. Their rejection of the natural reading of the text is driven by a hermeneutic of strong inaugurated eschatology4-the paradox that in the Apocalypse divine victory over the dragon and the reign of Christ and his church over this present evil world consist in participating with Christ in his sufferings and death? Inaugurated eschatology emphasizes Jesus' victory over the powers of evil at the cross. Since that monumental event, described so dramatically in Rev 12, Satan has been bound and the saints have been reigning (Rev 20). From the strong connection between the two chapters (see Table 1 below) they infer that Rev 20 recapitulates Rev 12.

  • Revelation 20 (NRSV) 1 Then I Saw an Angel Coming Down from Heaven
Revelation 20 (NRSV) 1 Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, holding in his hand the key to the bottomless pit and a great chain. 2 He seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the Devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years, 3 and threw him into the pit, and locked and sealed it over him, so that he would deceive the nations no more, until the thousand years were ended. After that he must be let out for a little while. 4 Then I saw thrones, and those seated on them were given authority to judge. I also saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for their testimony to Jesus and for the word of God. They had not worshiped the beast or its image and had not received its mark on their foreheads or their hands. They came to life and reigned with Christ a thousand years. 5 (The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were ended.) This is the first resurrection. 6 Blessed and holy are those who share in the first resurrection. Over these the second death has no power, but they will be priests of God and of Christ, and they will reign with him a thousand years. 7 When the thousand years are ended, Satan will be released from his prison 8 and will come out to deceive the nations at the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, in order to gather them for battle; they are as numerous as the sands of the sea.

  • We've Got Mail Jesus' Letter to the Church in Ephesus — Revelation
Pastor Jeff Barclay - July 5, 2020 We’ve Got Mail Jesus’ Letter to the Church in Ephesus — Revelation 2:1-7 Passionate about Doctrine, Passionless for Jesus Of the seven churches described in Revelation 2-3 Ephesus is the church with the most extra historical and doctrinal details —Acts 19-20 and Paul’s letter to the Ephesians. COMMUNION. As we share in the Lord’s Supper let’s go back to last week’s Sermon-to-Life. It will be a helpful way to provide context and introduce today’s sermon. The focus of which will be this statement from Jesus to the Church in Ephesus: “I know you are enduring patiently and bearing up for my name’s sake, and you have not grown weary. But I have this against you. You have abandoned the love you had at first. You have abandoned Me, your first love,” (Revelation 2:4-5). Last week I wrapped up saying this Together let’s slow down a little and pay attention to the most significant person that ever lived. Let’s pay a ridiculous amount of attention to Jesus. In the days ahead, let’s make more of Jesus in the days ahead! These sound similar to what Jesus reminded the church in Ephesus. Returning their focus to Him their first love. In it’s beginning the church in Ephesus made much of Jesus. The Apostle Paul lived and taught there for three years. (Acts 19:10) In a city known for its sensual cult worship of Artemis, extraordinary miracles occurred.

  • Final Victory and Celebration Await the People of God. in the Great Miracle Still to Come, Jesus Will Reign Forever with His People in a New Heaven and a New Earth
Focus Idea: Final victory and celebration await the people of God. In the Great Miracle still to come, Jesus will reign forever with his people in a New Heaven and a New Earth. The Context: Revelation is the last book in the Bible. Written near the end of the First Century AD, Revelation is a work of encouragement, social commentary, and prophecy. The text is in the form of apocalyptic literature, a style of writing that employs vivid images of otherworldly creatures, places, and experiences to bring transformation and hope to communities of believers. Revelation begins with a series of warnings and lessons for early churches located in Western Asia (Chapters 1-3) and continues with a series of visions and oracles meant to show persecuted Christians that God was in control of the world and would ultimately set things right (Chapters 4-20). Chapters 21 and 22 end the book. The Characters: The author of Revelation is John, but which John this is remains unclear. Some have suggested that the writer is one of Jesus’ original twelve disciples, but this cannot be proven. What is known is that the author represented a threat to the interests of imperial Rome and had been placed in exile (1:9). The Core: Where is the world going? How will it all end? Is humankind headed for a fiery collapse, or is there a chance that salvation and a new creation might yet come? Revelation 21 and 22 represent the final passages in the Christian Bible. They bravely answer the big questions about the future with a triumphant vision: God and his people will be united forever in joy.

The Restoration of the Primordial World of Geneis 1–3 in Revelation 21–22 Bruce Norman School of Religion Southern Adventist University One of the key discussions in religious studies today revolves around the ef- fect of post-modern thinking upon contemporary society. While modernity may be characterized as the age of empirical truth– what can be gained by the scien- tific method–post-modernity may be portrayed as an age in quest of renewed interpersonal relationships.1 Some of the most vital questions raised in connec- tion with the post-modern world view are those which have to do with origins and endings.2 The two biblical books which deal most directly with these questions are Genesis and Revelation.3 When we compare their content, we find their respec- tive messages are more related, and perhaps more relevant, to today’s world than we might think at first. Both deal with the intimately connected themes of ori- gins and endings, two vital matters among the concerns of the post-modern world.4 The purpose of this investigation is to explore the subject of origins as ex- pressed in Genesis 1-3 and its relationship to the apocalyptic end of the world presented in Revelation 21-22.

! Building Wholehearted Disciples of Jesus Behold, I am Coming Quickly Revelation 22 Teacher: Steve Holt Series: Apocalypse, The Book of Revelation © Steve Holt | TheRoad.org !1 Behold, I am Coming Quickly! Prayer: O God fire us up with anticipation of your soon coming! • Last week we had a tour of the holy city. • We saw the transparent and translucent light and the splendor of this city. • 6 times the word “come or coming” is used. 3 times Jesus says “I am coming quickly” and the meaning is “suddenly,” “unexpectedly.” Revelation 22:1 And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding from the throne of God and of the Lamb. • Is this real water or a river of the Spirit? I think it is a Spirit River. • It is life itself. In other words, it is not a river that contains life, but it is life! It is in fact life! • Because it is flowing from the Throne of God. • This is the River of Life in the center of the celestial city. • Glistening like a diamond, translucent and sparkling. • This is the lesson: Life flows from the Throne of God. o God has dominion! o God has authority! o In Matthew 8, the Centurion understood this with Jesus, “all you have to do is speak the word and my servant will be healed.” He understood that all of life flowed from Jesus. He was under authority! © Steve Holt | TheRoad.org !2 o The life you are searching for comes from Jesus. o This is what Jesus meant: that He is looking for a new kind of people that will worship Him in “Spirit and truth.” John 4:23-24 But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him.
