AWARDS-COMPETITIONS/EXHIBITIONS, GRANTS/PRIZES/SCHOLARSHIPS.

*Kathryn Wightman Winners The Final Ranamok Glass Prize! New Zealand based glass artist Kathryn Wightman has been named the 20th. and final Ranamok Glass Prize Winnerfor her exceptional work ‘Carpet’. The piece illustrates her fascination with using glass to mimic textile surfaces and create an illusory sense of reality – techniques she began exploring in her Ph.D. work, where she developed ways to apply creative printmaking processes to blown glass. She has now extended that work to kiln forming. Kathryn received her Bachelors, Masters and Doctorate degrees in the UK, but has since moved to New Zealand to teach at the Wanganui Glass School. The Judges said of her AU$15,000 prize winning piece: Kathryn Wightman’s ‘Carpet’ immediately captured the Judge’s attention because of its scale and technical innovation. Its historical reference to aged oriental carpets was seen as intriguing and beautiful reworking of historical imagery, very well known to everyone. The use of screen printing and sintering seem to indicate strongly an artist’s willingness to push the boundaries of what glass might be capable of. The poetic intervention of the human presence shown by the footprints gives the work a haunting presence. Email: [email protected] Website: www.ranamok.com

Deadline 01/12/14: Schiffer Publishing, Ltd., a leading publisher of art reference, decorative art, and design books, is calling for images for ‘Art Glass Today 2’. We are looking for beautiful, professional quality photography of the art glass you have created in any style or works by artists you represent, as well as interesting, engaging information about you or your artists for potential inclusion in this new publication. All materials submitted will be reviewed. Those artists chosen will receive a letter of acceptance listing their pieces that will be featured in the book. Schiffer Publishing takes pride in these books. For the artists involved, it is like a juried show in permanent, published form that will be available for years to come and available globally. The book’s listing of artist contact information and gallery locations are an excellent way to expand an artist’s or gallery’s patron base. Unlike most juried shows, submission and inclusion in this book are absolutely FREE! An artist’s only cost for participation is a little time, creative writing, and professional-level photography. A gallery’s involvement would be to encourage their artists to participate. Contributing artists are credited on the page with the photo caption information, the introductory information about themselves, as well as in the listings providing their contact information and gallery and museum locations where their work is on exhibit. In order to help keep the publishing house’s overhead low and avoid charging a submission fee as some publishers do, Schiffer Publishing does not provide complimentary copies of the book to contributing artists. However, every participant is offered an initial 40% discount should they wish to purchase copies of this book or any of our 5200 titles. Our website has a complete listing of our titles in print. Interested in participating? Contact me for more information and a submission form. We are extending our submission deadline for all materials to December 1, 2014 in accommodate more submissions. If you have already submitted materials, please, do not resend your submission and thank you for your patience. Sincerely, Carey Massimini. Please email me at Email: [email protected] if you are interested in coming along on this course. Understanding Furnace Design and Glass Technology with Richard Golding. Richard has been involved with glass for over 30 years since he set up Okra Glass in 1979. He is renowned for his efficient furnaces, glass recipes and designs, use of iridescence, reduction, colour and surface decoration. In 2010 Richard left Okra and opened his eighth glass studio and first ever gallery, Station Glass, in a Victorian Station building at the end of a preserved railway line in Shenton, Leicestershire, England. The Station was far too small to fit in traditional glassmaking equipment so Richard worked with Merlyn Farwell of PIElectronics to design and build a combined furnace, lehr and gloryhole, the COMBO. The COMBO is now run on electricity and makes glassmaking affordable and possible in a very small space. Richard`s glass is highly collectible and features in museums, galleries and private collections around the world. Originally inspired by artist`s such as Carder, Galle, Daum and Tiffany, Richard`s work at the Station is pushing back the boundaries even further, with new pieces involving intricate layered, surface decoration, lampworking, cutting and colour combinations. Richard was involved in the Stourbridge Twenty Twelve Portland Vase Project where he used his own glass recipes to achieve the right expansion and colour and then blew the blanks for the recreation of the Portland Vase. As well as running a successful studio Richard periodically runs courses on iridising, furnace design and glass technology at his studio in Leicestershire and taught glass technology and colour on a 6 day Masterclass at Corning Museum of Glass in America. *New Glass Furnaces. Microfusion Ltd. together with A.F.T. Ltd. have designed and produced several new and innovative glass making furnaces. These furnaces need to be commissioned in a professional working or teaching environment to enable us to compare actual performance against the design criteria. We are therefore seeking enquiries from glassmakers in the UK who might want to join us in a mutually beneficial partnership. The furnaces available are the TFS100e and TFS100g. These are electric and gas versions of a furnace producing 100kgs of glass. Both share the following features: designed for continuous or intermittent use. tank can be completely drained to enable colour change or glass free shut down program. fully automatic and programmeable temperature control. gathering height can be adjustable. furnace is movable. In addition, we have the smaller PFS30 electric furnace which is a 30kg top gathering cullet melter. This furnace is designed for people who want to experience molten glass in a non professional workshop and for professionals who might, for example, have a need to add colour to their existing production. For more information and to discuss the possibilities please contact David Taylor on Email: [email protected]

*Siddy Langley: Unique Tuition & Limited Edition Opportunities. Siddy Langley is an internationally renowned glassblower with over thirty years experience. She is offering some tuition opportunities as part of a kickstarter project to fund the heat reclamation system she needs to install in her new blowing studio and eco-house. She has on offer twenty lots of one day 1-1 or 1-2 blowing tuition and three lots of five day 1-1 blowing tuition which would be hugely valuable to any glass blower looking to learn from Siddy. She will tailor the tuition to the level of the person booking. Siddy doesn’t usually offer 1-1 tuition and neither does she usually offer five day 1-1 tuition so this is a rare opportunity for people to learn from her. The project details can be found here at Website: www.kickstarter.com/projects/880030579/this-is-my-chance-to-make-glassblowing-more-eco-fr As part of the same project she is also offering limited edition glass items, which will be of interest to any collectors of her work. *Shooting Star CHASE. Charity Contemporary Art Sale @ The Royal College Of Art, Thursday, 9th. October 2014. In an email from Mark Holford, Curator of the Contemporary Glass Section within the sale, he tells me that he/they sold some £38.5k worth of contemporary glass, added to which, another £1,300 was raised from something called the ‘Donation Wall’ (which included work by Peter Layton and 9 yr old Amy Jackson Fawkes). Mark goes on to say that there is also a possibility of selling another £15k from which S.S.C. will benefit. All I can say to that is, what a fantastic job, well done everyone that helped out and donated work. Additionally, Mark states that he would very much like to thank Richard Jackson, Sally Fawkes, Katharine Coleman M.B.E., David Coleman, Margaret Alston and Allison Kinnaird M.B.E. for all their help and support – not only in respect of this years event but also, and more specifically, in the case of Rik, Sal and Katharine, who have helped, curate and run this ever since we started with the glass. Congratulations to all of them, and if I may say something here, a big thank you to all of the Glass Artists over the many years that this event has been going, thank you for donating your work and being a part of this cause.
