Not many communities can boast that they are no more than a mile away from a river or lake, but the Breezeway communities of East Jordan, Ellsworth and Atwood certainly can! We truly are a “River and Lake Wonderland“! East Jordan is uniquely and ideally situated on the beautiful South Arm of Lake Charlevoix and at the mouth of the Jordan River - Michigan’s first designated Wild and Scenic River. The Village of Ellsworth is conveniently located at the mouth of Lake Sinclair and sits next to beautiful Lake Ellsworth. These lakes, among others, comprise the 80-mile Chain of Lakes Water Trail. The Water Trail is one of only eight State of Michigan Department of Natural Resources’ recently designated water trails. The Chain of Lakes Water Trail is the first designated trail in northern Michigan. Atwood is just a short distance from the gorgeous shores of Lake Michigan. The Banks Township Park provides a great picnic area, beach and park and is located on Banks Township Park Road just off of Old Dixie Highway. All of these communities are also short distances away from many inland lakes, nature preserves, hiking trails, recreational opportunities, plus much more. R3 Triathlon Ride: Participants start the R3 Triathlon at the East Jor- dan Tourist Park on the shores of Lake Charlevoix. The race Saturday, June 22 starts with a gorgeous 19 mile road bike ride with scenic views of farmland, countryside and Lake Charlevoix to fin- ish the ride at the Tourist Park. Run: Participants run 2.3 miles on a scenic trail through Little Traverse Conservancy land along the pristine Jordan River to their watercraft at the Rogers Bridge Jordan River Access site. River: Participants paddle 2.7 miles down the Jordan River, under East Jordan bridge and into Lake Charlevoix. Paddlers can use a kayak, canoe or stand up paddle board for this segment. Freedom, family and friendship are celebrated during the five day event. Kiersten’s Ride Kiersten’s Ride is a Horseback/Walk/ATV fundraising event dedicated to bringing help, hope, and healing Saturday, August 17 through suicide prevention programs in northern Lower Michigan. In memory of East Jordan High School student Kiersten Clavier’s 2012 death by suicide, Kiersten’s Ride, a non-profit organization, is committed to raising awareness in our communities so that future acts of suicide may be prevented.

The mission of the Little Traverse Conservancy is to protect the natural diversity and beauty of northern Michigan by preserving significant land and scenic areas, and fostering appreciation and understanding of the environment. Our service area includes Chippewa, Mackinac, Emmet, Cheboygan, and Charlevoix counties. The Jordan River is a 24.9-mile-long stream, the largest tributary of Lake Charlevoix. The Jordan's headwaters rise from springs in the upper Jordan River Valley northeast of Mancelona in Antrim County. The Jordan River was the first river to be designated in Michigan's Natural Rivers Program. The Jordan River is well known for its world-class brook trout fishing and for its scenic canoe trips. The headwaters are accessible by many foot and snowmobile trails.

Being awarded this honor is partly due to the many forms of recreation the lake provides, including swimming, kayaking, sailing, fishing, diving, boating, water skiing, and just relaxing on the beach. Lake Charlevoix is also one of Michigan’s largest and most magnificent lakes. It is the 3rd largest lake in the state in terms of surface area, but its shoreline length far exceeds that of any other inland lake in Michigan. If you kayak the entire shoreline of Lake Charlevoix, you will have traversed 60 miles!
Chain of Lakes Water Trail The Chain of Lakes is a highlight to our region and it is no wonder. These connected lakes are diverse paddling opportunities on some of northern Michigan’s clear pristine lakes. The Chain of Lakes Water Trail is one of only eight state-designated water trails and the only water trail in Northern Michigan. This non-motorized water trail has over 80 miles of routes to explore and something for all types of paddlers. The Upper Chain is made up of smaller lakes and is a great experience for beginner paddlers. Paddle through a mile of protected shoreline, check out an island, or just enjoy the calm and quiet of paddling through the crystal waters. You can begin, end or pass through the three lakeside communities of Ellsworth, Central Lake, and Bellaire where you will find food, camping, and all the other amenities you need to make your trip complete. The Lower Chain includes larger lakes like Torch Lake and Elk Lake for experienced paddlers looking for an adventure. Explore the serene Grass River Natural Area, find a sunken ship, or just enjoy the turquoise waters of Torch Lake. On December 16, 1919, a Charter was granted by State Headquarters. After meeting at several locations, the C.H. Whittington building was pur- chased for $600 in the fall of 1939. If you are seek- ing a great place to live, retire, or play, Ellsworth is the place. With its park system, waterways, scenic roads, and snowmobile trails, Ellsworth is a great area to take advantage of Michigan’s Natural Resources during the four seasons. Atwood is home to several farm markets, a winery, 3 restaurants, a John Deere mecca, a famous tiny chapel and an 18-hole golf course. Oh, and a 156 acre public natural area is located on Lake Michigan.
Ellsworth Community Park: Located on 4 acres in the heart of the Village of Ellsworth, on the west shore of Ellsworth Lake, part of the Chain O’ Lakes, the park features Michigan’s largest outdoor public Archery Range, a pavilion, restrooms/multipurpose building, playground area, fishing pier, boat dock, walking paths/observation deck, Labyrinth, and sledding hill. The pavilion can be used for roller blading, ice skating, and social gatherings. The pathway is 1.3 miles in length with an observation deck extending into Ellsworth Lake. The Labyrinth is one of the largest in the Northern Midwest. The Ellsworth River Park: Located on Ellsworth Lake next to the Wooden Shoe Campground, it contains a lovely sandy beach, boat launch, playground, and fishing platforms. As part of the Chain of Lakes Water Trail, it is the starting point of Paddle Antrim held the 2nd weekend after Labor Day. Wooden Shoe Campground: Overlooking Ellsworth Lake and the Village, it has a great swimming beach, boat launch, pavilion, and good fishing with a fish cleaning station. Wooden Shoe has 45 modern, large sites with water & electricity, free high-speed wireless internet, dump station, on-site 24-hour management, private show- ers, and restrooms. Camping can be reserved any time. Antrim Creek Natural Area (Atwood): 156 acre parcel in Banks Town- ship. Conservation of the wetlands and sand dunes while allowing enjoyment by the public. Hiking trails and boardwalks allow access to remote areas of the property, with strategically placed benches and overlooks for resting and taking in the beauty. Small boats, kayaks and canoes can be carefully launched via the north entrance. Parking is available at both entrances with outdoor toilets nearby. Banks Township Park (Atwood): One acre, peaceful park overlooking Lake Michigan. Picnic tables, grills, benches and an outdoor toilet with ample room for a volleyball game on the upper level. Access to the beach is via a sloped, grassy path or set of steps. The BEST sunsets!
