Charlevoix County Updated 2016 Economic Profile – Charlevoix County Updated 2016 County Highlights Charlevoix County is located in the northwestern part of the lower peninsula, east of Lake Michigan and traversed by US-31 and US-131. In addition to the mainland, the county includes Beaver Island some 25 miles offshore in Lake Michigan. The county is 416 square miles and is the state's fourth smallest. Lake Charlevoix, the third largest in the state with a surface area of over 17,200 acres, is in Charlevoix County. The county seat is Charlevoix. The retail and service industries dominate this tourist economy, though there is some manufacturing of automotive stampings, wiring devices, and engineering and scientific instruments. Fisherman's Island State Park, Young State Park, and the Mackinaw State Forest occupy many acres within the county. Skiing, hunting, fishing, and boating are all offered in abundance in the county. This report provides an assessment and compilation of recreation-related monitoring data sources across the National Wilderness Preservation System (NWPS). Telephone interviews with managers of all units of the NWPS and a literature search were conducted to locate studies that provide campsite impact data, trail impact data, and information about visitor characteristics. Of the 628 wildernesses that comprised the NWPS in January 2000, 51 percent had baseline campsite data, 9 percent had trail condition data and 24 percent had data on visitor characteristics. Wildernesses managed by the Forest Service and National Park Service were much more likely to have data than wildernesses managed by the Bureau of Land Management and Fish and Wildlife Service. Both unpublished data collected by the management agencies and data published in reports are included. Extensive appendices provide detailed information about available data for every study that we located. These have been organized by wilderness so that it is easy to locate all the information available for each wilderness in the NWPS. Rakoczy Michigan Department of Natural Resources Charlevoix Fisheries Research Station 96 Grant Street Charlevoix, Michigan 49720 Abstract.–Sharp declines in the Thunder Bay, Lake Huron and Lake Charlevoix brown trout fisheries prompted investigations into the causes of brown trout failures in these waters and possible solutions. Both Thunder Bay and Lake Charlevoix are located in the northern part of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. Test netting and diet studies of predators and prey in Thunder Bay during 1990 showed that piscivorous fish, particularly walleyes, consumed recently stocked brown trout, but that spawning aggregations of alewives during June appeared to buffer predation on stocked trout by offering ample alternate prey. The stocking date for brown trout, which had been early May, was therefore changed to mid-June in 1992. Two strains of brown trout, Wild Rose and Seeforellen, were selected for field evaluation based on evidence of satisfactory lacustrine performance elsewhere, and programmed for testing in Thunder Bay and Lake Charlevoix. These strains were also compared with Plymouth Rock strain, which had been stocked in both systems prior to the study. Both Seeforellen and Wild Rose strains produced greater returns and faster growth than Plymouth Rock strain. Seeforellen and Wild Rose strains were similar to each other with respect to returns to creel, growth rates, and longevity in the fishery.

The airport received the designation for its efforts associated with the rehabilitation and extension of its east-west runway last fall. The nearly $14 million project - which including completely repaving the runway and extending it by 115 feet, bringing its total length to 7,015 feet - will allow airlines to accommodate more passengers in the summer. Passengers were previously being bumped to lessen the cargo load in planes so that aircraft could achieve lift on the shorter runway in the thinner hot air. The project, initially estimated to take 162 days, was completed in just 21.
