Closing Arguments from Maccabees on Trial- Kol Ami 2014 Maccabees on Trial: Kol Ami, 2014 Closing Arguments: Scott Musoff WE ALL NEED HEROES. WE ALL WANT HEROES. INDEED, I TOO ENJOY WATCHING OUR CHILDREN IN THESE VERY HALLS, SING: I WANT TO BE A MACCABEE, SO BIG AND STRONG AND BOLD. I WANT TO BE A MACCABEE, BUT I'M ONLY FOUR YEARS OLD. BUT WHEN WE'RE OLDER, WE REALIZE EVEN OUR HEROES HAVE FLAWS. EVEN OUR HEROES CAN DO WRONG. AND EVEN OUR HEROES MUST BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR ACTIONS. AND THAT GOES FOR MATTATHIAS AND HIS TWO SONS. THIS TRIBUNAL IS NOT ABOUT THE REVOLT AGAINST THE GREEKS, THIS TRIBUNAL IS NOT ABOUT AVENGING THE GREAT ATROCITIES AGAINST HANNAH AND HER SONS, AND THIS TRIBUNAL IS NOT ABOUT SAVING THE JEWISH PEOPLE. THIS TRIBUNAL IS ABOUT A CIVIL WAR. A WAR OF JEW AGAINST JEW. ABOUT THE ATROCITIES THAT MATTATHIAS AND HIS SONS COMMITTED AGAINST JEWS WHO DID NOT PRACTICE IN THE WAY THE MACCABEES BELIEVED A JEW SHOULD PRACTICE. SPECIFICALLY, THE MACCABEES MURDERED SCHMUEL AND FORCED THE CIRCUMCISION OF REBEKAH'S SON DANIEL AGAINST HIS AND HIS MOTHER'S WILL. AND WHY? YOU HEARD MATTATHIAS' TESTIMONY THAT THE MACCABEES BELIEVED THAT A JEW "SHOULD NOT VARY ONE INCH FROM GOD'S LAW" -- NOT ONE INCH. IT DIDN'T MATTER TO MATTATHIAS OR HIS SONS, WHAT SCHMUEL OR DANIEL OR ANY OTHER JEWS ACTUALLY BELIEVED; IT DIDN'T MATTER WHAT WAS IN THEIR MINDS; INSTEAD, THE MACCABEES TRAVELED THROUGH THE COUNTRYSIDE KILLING JEWS LIKE SCHMUEL WHO ADOPTED SOME OF THE WAYS OF THE GREEKS AND CIRCUMCISING BY FORCE ALL UNCIRCUMCISED MALES THEY FOUND, INCLUDING DANIEL. THINK ABOUT IT. WHAT DO WE CALL PEOPLE WHO REFUSE TO VARY ONE INCH FROM THE WRITTEN SCRIPTURE -- WHETHER THE TORAH, THE KORAN OR THE NEW TESTAMENT – WE CALL THEM RELIGIOUS FANATICS. AND WHAT ARE THE DANGERS WHEN RELIGIOUS FANATICS TURN VIOLENT IN THE NAME OF GOD? THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE BETWEEN YELLING "MI CHA MOCHA BAELIM ADONAI" -- WHO IS HOLIER THAN YOU -- BEFORE MURDERING SCHMUEL FOR HIS BELIEFS; AND SOMEONE YELLING ALLAHU ACHBAR -- GOD IS GREAT -- BEFORE CRASHING TWO PLANES INTO BUILDINGS. OR THE KIDNAPPING OF HUNDREDS OF NIGERIAN GIRLS BECAUSE SOMEONE IN THE NAME OF GOD DOESN'T BELIEVE THEY SHOULD BE EXPOSED TO WESTERN EDUCATION (WHICH IS BASED ON GREEK CULTURE). OR THE LAUNCHING OF HUNDREDS OF YEARS OF CRUSADES. OR THE MURDER OF YITZAK RABIN BY A JEW BECAUSE RABIN SOUGHT PEACE. THESE ATROCITIES WERE ALL IN THE NAME OF GOD. BUT THEY ARE ALL WRONG. AND PEOPLE WHO MURDER AND MAIM – EVEN IN THE NAME OF GOD, ESPECIALLY IN THE NAME OF GOD -- MUST BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR ACTIONS. WE SIMPLY DO NOT AND SHOULD NOT ALLOW ANY ONE -- EVEN THE MACCABEES -- TO MURDER AND MAIM PEOPLE BASED ON HAVING DIFFERENT BELIEFS. IN THE WORDS OF ISIAH'S TESTIMONY, "THIS MUST STOP. JEWS KILLING JEWS, ALL IN THE NAME OF TORAH." LET'S GO OVER THE FACTS. THERE IS NO DISPUTE THAT MATTHIAS MURDERED SCHMUEL. HIS RAGE OVER A PIG SACRIFICE OVERCAME HIM AND HE LASHED OUT AND MURDERED SCHMUEL IN COLD BLOOD. HE DID NOT JUST ATTACK THE GREEK OFFICER, BUT HE MURDERED THE INNOCENT SCHMUEL. AND WE KNOW THIS WASN'T NECESSARY TO SAVE THE JEWISH PEOPLE BECAUSE EVEN HIS SON SIMON TRIED TO STOP HIM. SIMON TESTIFIED, "I TRIED TO STOP HIM WHEN HE ROSE, BUT FOR AN OLD MAN HE WAS STILL QUICK AND STRONG." SIMON TRIED TO STOP HIS FATHER FROM COMMITTING MURDER BUT COULDN'T. SIMON COULDN'T GET THERE IN TIME AND MATTATHIAS SLAUGHTERED POOR SCHMUEL, JUST BECAUSE SCHMUEL SLAUGHTERED A PIG. NOW MATTATHIAS MUST BE HELD RESPONSIBLE. AND WHAT ABOUT DANIEL. THERE IS NO DISPUTE ABOUT THE FACTS. REBEKAH AND HER HUSBAND MADE A DECISION NOT TO CIRCUMCISE THEIR SON. THAT WAS THEIR DECISION. YET, MATTATHIAS, JUDAH AND SIMON TOOK DANIEL INTO THE WOODS AND CIRCUMCISED DANIEL BY FORCE. AND DANIEL WAS NO BABY, MIND YOU. THEY TOOK A SWORD TO DANIEL AGAINST HIS WISHES AND THOSE OF THIS MOTHER. WE CRINGE WHEN HEAR OF FORCED FEMALE CIRCUMCISION IN THE NAME OF RELIGION; WE CRINGE WHEN OTHERS MAIM INNOCENT PEOPLE IN THE NAME OF RELIGION; AND WE SHOULD CRINGE WHEN JEW DOES IT TO JEW AS THE MACCABEES DID UNTO DANIEL. AND THEY SHOULD PAY THE PRICE. I RESPECTFULLY SUBMIT THAT THE DEFENSE OF NECESSITY – NECESSARY TO SAVE THE JEWISH PEOPLE – MUST BE REJECTED. WHERE DO THE MACCABEES DRAW THE LINE? WHO IS A JEW? WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A JEW? WEARING A KIPAH ON YOUR HEAD TO SERVICES? SHOULD WE MURDER ALL THOSE WHO CHOOSE NOT TO DO SO. YOU, YOU AND YOU? SHOULD WE MURDER AND MAIM THOSE THAT ALLOW WOMEN TO PRAY EQUALLY WITH MEN, HOW ABOUT THOSE THAT ALLOW WOMEN TO BECOME RABBIS? THERE ARE ALWAYS, EVEN TODAY, THOSE THAT WILL SAY: THOSE JEWS WHO STRAY "ONE INCH" FROM GOD'S LAWS ARE NOT JEWS. BUT WE DON'T, AND SHOULDN'T, ALLOW THEM TO MURDER AND MAIM THOSE WHO DO STRAY. AND WHO KNOWS WHAT WOULD BECOME OF THE JEWISH PEOPLE IF IT WERE MORE PLURALISTIC, MORE OPEN. PERHAPS ONE DAY WE WOULD HAVE AN OLYMPICS FOR JEWISH ATHLETES MODELED ON THE GREEK OLYMPICS. AND WE COULD CALL THEM THE MACCABEAH GAMES -- HOW IRONIC. THE MACCABEAH GAMES NAMED FOR A PEOPLE WHO WANTED NOTHING TO DO WITH GREEK 2 CULTURE? ALSO, IMAGINE A JEWISH PEOPLE WITHOUT JUST ONE TEMPLE IN JERUSALEM, WITHOUT ANIMAL SACRIFICES AND WITHOUT HIGH PRIESTS. IT IS POSSIBLE. USING VIOLENCE TO MAINTAIN THE STATUS QUO IS NOT THE ANSWER. HEARTS AND MINDS ARE WON WITH IDEAS NOT VIOLENCE. DON'T GET ME WRONG, I AM A REALIST. I UNDERSTAND FORCE IS SOMETIMES NECESSARY TO DEFEND ONESELF AND EVEN TO DEFEND A PEOPLE. BUT THE MACCABEES ARE NOT ON TRIAL FOR THE WAR ON THE GREEKS OR THE KILLING OF THE GREEK OFFICER. THEY ARE ON TRIAL FOR THE MURDER OF SCHMUEL AND THE FORCED CIRCUMCISION OF DANIEL. JEWS HAVE ALWAYS BEEN PERSECUTED. INDEED, THERE IS THE OLD JOKE, WHAT NINE WORDS DESCRIBES EVERY JEWISH HOLIDAY. "THEY TRIED TO KILL US. WE WON. LET'S EAT." BUT WE PERSEVERE AS A PEOPLE. AS A GREAT RABBI ONCE SAID, IT IS BETTER TO BE AMONG THE PERSECUTED, THAN THE PERSECUTORS. AND FROM TIME TO TIME, JEWS HAVE DONE WHAT THEY NEEDED TO DO TO SURVIVE. FOR EXAMPLE, THE MARRANOS OR CONVERSOS -- THOSE SPANISH JEWS WHO HAD TO SWEAR TO CHRISTIANITY DURING THE INQUISITION WHILE PRACTICING JUDAISM IN HIDING – ARE VIEWED AS HEROES. WE DON'T THINK THEY SHOULD HAVE BEEN MURDERED AND MAIMED BY OTHER JEWS SIMPLY BECAUSE THEY DID WHAT THEY NEEDED TO DO TO SURVIVE. I WANT TO THANK YOU AGAIN FOR YOUR ATTENTION. AND NOW I ASK YOU TO FOCUS ON THE EVIDENCE, NOT THE RHETORIC ABOUT HEROIC ACTIONS. THE FACTS ARE THE FACTS. AND WE MUST HOLD MATTATHIAS AND HIS SONS RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR ACTIONS BECAUSE WE KNOW THE DANGERS THAT FLOW FROM UNCHECKED VIOLENT FANATICS WHO JUSTIFY VIOLENCE IN GOD'S NAME. HEROES HAVE FAULTS. BUT RECOGNIZING THOSE FAULTS, MAKES US AND OUR HEROES STRONGER NOT WEAKER. THEREFORE, I ASK YOU TO HOLD THE MACCABEES RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR ACTIONS -- THE MURDER OF SCHMUEL, POOR SCHMUEL, AND THE FORCED CIRCUMCISION OF DANIEL -- AND I ASK YOU TO RETURN A VERDICT OF GUILTY ON ALL COUNTS. 3 .

General Introduction SUMMARY Th e fi rst and second books of Maccabees narrate events that occurred in Judea from the 170s through the 150s and eventually led to the rise of the Hasmonean dynasty: the toppling of the last high priest of the Oniad dynasty, the transforma- tion of Jerusalem into a Greek polis, Antiochos IV’s storming of Jerusalem, his desecration of the temple and his so-called persecution of the Jews, the liberation of the city and rededication of the temple altar by Judas Maccabee, the foundation of the commemorative festival of Hanukkah, and the subsequent wars against Seleukid troops. 1 Maccabees covers the deeds of Mattathias, the ancestor of the Maccabean/Hasmonean family, and his three sons, Judas, Jonathan, and Simon, taking its story down to the establishment of the dynastic transmission of power within the Hasmonean family when John, Simon’s son, succeeded his father; whereas 2 Maccabees, which starts from Heliodoros’s visit to Jerusalem under the high priest Onias III, focuses on Judas and the temple rededication, further dis- playing a pointed interest in the role of martyrs alongside that of Judas. Because of this diff erence in chronological scope and emphasis, it is usually considered that 1 Maccabees is a dynastic chronicle written by a court historian, whereas 2 Macca- bees is the work of a pious author whose attitude toward the Hasmoneans has been diversely appreciated—from mild support, through indiff erence, to hostility. Moreover, the place of redaction of 2 Maccabees, either Jerusalem or Alexandria, is debated. Both because of its comparatively fl amboyant style and the author’s alleged primarily religious concerns, 2 Maccabees is held as an unreliable source of evidence about the causes of the Judean revolt.

  • Hanukah History
A BRIEF HISTORY OF Chanukah More than a little oil – edited by Rabbi Ron Symons Alexander the Great conquered Israel in the 4 th century B.C.E. He was a benevolent ruler result of a vision he was said to have had before he began any battle. The story goes that upon entering Jerusalem, he was met by the High Priest, Shimon HaTzaddik. Before every battle, he saw his likeness in a vision. As a result, he cancelled taxes on the Jews during the Sabbatical year, offered animals in the Temple on his own behalf, and granted the Jews religious freedom. Conditions changed when Alexander died. His empire was divided among different generals. After a power struggle, Israel came under the control of the Seleucid Dynasty – Greek kings who ruled from Syria. Until this point, the major threat was spiritual annihilation resulting from Hellenization, the adaptation of Greek culture and philosophy (assimilation). Hellenization attacked the moral, ethical and religious fibre of Judaism. Many Jews resisted assimilation but many became ardent Hellenists. Under the Seleucid kings, this situation continued. With the rise of Antiochus IV both the spiritual and physical survival of the Jewish people was severely threatened. Sadly enough, Jewish Hellenists contributed towards Jewish destruction by complaining to the king that the pace of assimilation was not fast enough. Tragedy resulted. One man, named Joshua, or the Hellenized Jason, bribed the King into replacing the high priest and appointing him instead. This new “high-priest” erected a gymnasium near the Temple where the priests would go and play sports, thereby neglecting their duties.

The Temple contained many beautiful objects, including a tall, golden menorah. Unlike menorahs of today, this one had seven (rather than nine) branches. Instead of being lit by candles or light bulbs, this menorah burned oil. Every evening, oil would be poured into the cups that sat on top of the menorah. The Temple would be filled with shimmering light. At the time of the Hanukkah story, a mean king named Antiochus ruled over the land of Israel. “I don’t like these Jewish people,” declared Antiochus. “They are so different from me. I don’t celebrate Shabbat or read from the Torah, so why should they?” Antiochus made many new, cruel rules. “No more celebrating Shabbat! No more going to the Temple, and no more Torah!” shouted Antiochus. He told his guards to go into the Temple and make a mess. They brought mud, stones, and garbage into the Temple. They broke furniture and knocked things down; they smashed the jars of oil that were used to light the menorah. Antiochus and his soldiers made the Jews feel sad and angry. A Jewish man named Judah Maccabee said, “We must stop Antiochus! We must think of ways to make him leave the land of Israel.” At first, Judah’s followers, called the Maccabees, were afraid.

USCCB > Bible 1 MACCABEES, CHAPTER 1 From Alexander to Antiochus. 1 a After Alexander the Macedonian, Philip’s son, who came from the land of Kittim,* had defeated Darius, king of the Persians and Medes, he became king in his place, having first ruled in Greece. 2 He fought many battles, captured fortresses, and put the kings of the earth to death. 3 He advanced to the ends of the earth, gathering plunder from many nations; the earth fell silent before him, and his heart became proud and arrogant. 4 He collected a very strong army and won dominion over provinces, nations, and rulers, and they paid him tribute. 5 But after all this he took to his bed, realizing that he was going to die. 6 So he summoned his noblest officers, who had been brought up with him from his youth, and divided his kingdom among them while he was still alive. 7 Alexander had reigned twelve years* when he died. 8 So his officers took over his kingdom, each in his own territory, 9 and after his death they all put on diadems,* and so did their sons after them for many years, multiplying evils on the earth. 10 There sprang from these a sinful offshoot, Antiochus Epiphanes, son of King Antiochus, once a hostage at Rome. He became king in the one hundred and thirty-seventh year* of the kingdom of the Greeks. Lawless Jews. 11 b In those days there appeared in Israel transgressors of the law who seduced many, saying: “Let us go and make a covenant with the Gentiles all around us; since we separated from them, many evils have come upon us.” 12 The proposal was agreeable; 13 some from among the people promptly went to the king, and he authorized them to introduce the ordinances of the Gentiles.

  • Plotting Antiochus's Persecution
JBL123/2 (2004) 219-234 PLOTTING ANTIOCHUS'S PERSECUTION STEVEN WEITZMAN [email protected] Indiana University, Bloomington, IN 47405-7005 The history of religious persecution could be said to have begun in 167 B.C.E. when the Seleucid king Antiochus IV issued a series of decrees outlawing Jewish religious practice. According to 1 Maccabees, anyone found with a copy of the Torah or adhering to its laws—observing the Sabbath, for instance, or practicing circumcision—was put to death. Jews were compelled to build altars and shrines to idols and to sacrifice pigs and other unclean animals. The temple itself was desecrated by a "desolating abomination" built atop the altar of burnt offering. The alternative account in 2 Maccabees adds to the list of outrages: the temple was renamed for Olympian Zeus, and the Jews were made to walk in a procession honoring the god Dionysus. Without apparent precedent, the king decided to abolish an entire religion, suppressing its rites, flaunting its taboos, forcing the Jews to follow "customs strange to the land." Antiochus IV s persecution of Jewish religious tradition is a notorious puz zle, which the great scholar of the period Elias Bickerman once described as "the basic and sole enigma in the history of Seleucid Jerusalem."1 Earlier for eign rulers of the Jews in Jerusalem, including Antiochus s own Seleucid fore bears, were not merely tolerant of the religious traditions of their subjects; they often invested their own resources to promote those traditions.2 According to Josephus, Antiochus III, whose defeat of the Ptolemaic kingdom at the battle of Panium in 200 B.C.E.

  • Celebrating Hanukkah
Celebrating Hanukkah Hanukkah Means Dedication The eight-day festival of Hanukkah is celebrated beginning on the 25 of Kislev, a month on the lunar Hebrew calendar that usually falls between the end of November and the end of December on the solar standard calendar. Hanukkah means “dedication,” and the holiday commemorates the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem after the defeat of the Syrian- Greeks in 165 BC. The Syrian-Greek emperor Antiochus IV tried to force the Greek culture and religion upon the Jewish people under his rule. In 168 BC, he declared that the Temple holy to the Jews would be used for the worship of the god Zeus. Soon after, he completely outlawed Judaism and made its practice punishable by death. Mattathias, the High Priest in the Temple, and his sons refused to give up their religion and led a revolt against the Greeks. Mattathias, his family, and those who joined them were called Maccabees (MAC-ah-bees) because Yahuda, Mattathias’ oldest son, was a powerful warrior nicknamed Ha’Maccabee (Ha-MAC-ah-bee), ancient Hebrew for “the Hammer.” The Miracle of the Oil Although they were outnumbered, the Maccabees defeated the Greeks after several years of fighting and reclaimed the Temple. As they prepared to rededicate their defiled Temple, the Jews found only enough pure oil to light the Eternal Light for one day. The oil miraculously lasted for eight days, allowing time for more oil to be pressed from olives and purified for use. The hanukkiyah (ha-NOO-kee-yuh) is a special menorah used only during Hanukkah.

  • Daniel R. Schwartz from the Maccabees to Masada
Daniel R. Schwartz From the Maccabees to Masada: On Diasporan Historiography of the Second Temple Period Around the time Prof. Oppenheimer invited me to this conference, I was prepar- ing the introduction to my translation of II Maccabees, and had come to the part where I was going to characterize II Maccabees as a typical instance of diasporan historiography. I was thinking, first of all, about the comparison of such passages as I Macc 1:20-23 with II Macc 5:15-16, which both describe Antiochus IV Epiphanes' robbery of the Temple of Jerusalem: I Macc 1:20-23: He went up against Israel and came to Jerusalem with a strong force. He ar- rogantly entered the sanctuary and took the golden altar, the lampstand for the light, and all its utensils. He took also the table for the bread of the Presence, the cups for drink offerings, the bowls, the golden censers, the curtain, the crowns, and the gold decoration on the front of the temple; he stripped it all off. He took the silver and the gold, and the costly utensils... (Revised Standard Version) II Macc 5:15—16: Not content with this (i.e., slaughter and enslavement), Antiochus dared to enter the most holy temple in all the world, guided by Menelaus, who had become a traitor both to the laws and to his country. He took the holy vessels with his polluted hands, and swept away with profane hands the votive offerings which other kings had made to enhance the glory and honor of the place.

  • The Basic Story
The Basic Story early 2,200 years ago, the Greek-Syrian ruler Antiochus IV tried to force Greek culture upon peoples in N his territory. Jews in Judea—now Israel—were forbidden their most important religious practices as well as study of the Torah. Although vastly outnumbered, religious Jews in the region took up arms to protect their community and their religion. Led by Mattathias the Hasmonean, and later his son Judah the Maccabee, the rebel armies became known as the Maccabees. After three years of fighting, in the year 3597, or about 165 BCE, the Maccabees victoriously reclaimed the temple on Jerusalem's Mount Moriah. Next they prepared the temple for rededication—in Hebrew, Hanukkah means “dedication.” In the temple they found only enough purified oil to kindle the temple light for a single day. But miraculously, the light continued to burn for eight days. The first sounds of the festival are the prayers (brachot) that accompany the lighting of the candles. The first two are recited each night, the third is recited only on the first night. We light the candles starting with Shamash (leader) then from left to right.
