RESUMEN Se estudió la variación altitudinal de la composición, riqueza, diversidad y estructura de la comunidad de mariposas diurnas en un gradiente altitudinal en la cuenca del río Combeima (Juntas-Tolima, Colombia), desde los 1.800 m hasta los 3.000 m a lo largo del año en tres periódos de muestreo, mediante el uso de redes entomológicas y tram- pas VanSomeren-Rydon. Se encontraron 101 especies de mariposas distribuidas en 59 géneros y cinco familias cuyos parámetros poblacionales variaron espacial y temporal- mente, mostrando marcada zonificación altitudinal en los 1.900 m la cual es una franja transicional de la composición faunística y en la que a partir de ella, existe un decre- mento en el número de especies exclusivas para cada estación de muestreo, las cuales podrían considerarse como especies indicadoras de disturbio ecosistémico. -

Associate, Department of Zoology - Insects Field Museum of Natural History 1400 South Lake Shore Drive Chicago, Illinois 60605 Telephone (708) 485 7358 home (312) 665 7016 museum Email jwdw440(q-), m indsprinq .co m > home wagner@,fmnh .orq> museum Abstract: From May 10, 2002 through September 13, 2002, eight field trips were made to the Harbor at Waukegan, Illinois to survey the beach - dunes and swales for Odonata [dragonfly], Lepidoptera [butterfly] and Coleoptera [beetles] faunas between Midwest Generation Plant on the North and the Outboard Marine Corporation ditch at the South . Eight species of Dragonflies, fourteen species of Butterflies, and eighteen species of beetles are identified . No threatened or endangered species were found in this survey during twenty-four hours of field observations . The area is undoubtedly home to many more species than those listed in this report. Of note, the endangered Karner Blue butterfly, Lycaeides melissa samuelis Nabakov was not seen even though it has been reported from Illinois Beach State Park, Lake County . The larval food plant, Lupinus perennis, for the blue was not observed at Waukegan. The limestone seeps habitat of the endangered Hines Emerald dragonfly, Somatochlora hineana, is not part of the ecology here . One surprise is the. breeding population of Buckeye butterflies, Junonia coenid (Hubner) which may be feeding on Purple Loosestrife . The specimens collected in this study are deposited in the insect collection at the Field Museum . -

La familia Nymphalidae tuvo la mayor abundancia (169) y riqueza de especies (56), y las espe- cies más abundantes: Euptychoides laccine (15) y Pedaliodes ph- rasis (12). El análisis de calidad del inventario señaló una riqueza potencial de 168,61, proporción de especies observadas del 53,97% y esfuerzo de muestreo del 99,97%. Puente Rojo tuvo los mayores valores de diversidad: abundancia (168), riqueza obser- vada (72), N0 (165,20), N1 (52,44) y N2 (36,66). The sample was collected during the Characterization of wild Entomofauna of the Frio river basin jurisdiction of CDMB, in secondary forests in an altitudinal gradient from 1,000 to 2,911 masl. 79 specimens of the family Pieridae were collected, belonging to 13 genera of which Leptophobia had 5 species, and Catasticta and Eurema had 3 species each. We obtained 22 species distributed in six sampling locations, where the highest richness of species was in Diviso Experimental Center with 12 species and Esperanza Experimental Center with 10. The analysis of the inventory quality showed a potential richness of 32.81 species, a proportion of the observed species of 67.05% and a sampling effort of 76.41%. The comparison of inventories for each locality showed a certain similarity between La Nevera, La Mariana and La Judia, and fewer similarities with El Diviso. -

Países como Guatemala, en esta gran área biogeográfi ca, tiene grandes zonas de bosque húmedo tropical y bosque mesófi lo, por esta razón es muy importante para analizar la diversidad en la región. Lamentablemente, la fauna de mariposas de Guatemala es poco conocida y por lo tanto, es necesario llevar a cabo un estudio y análisis de la composición y la diversidad de las mariposas (Lepidoptera: Papilionoidea) en Guatemala. -

Data are from 12 years field experience in the country and from Museums specimens. Some new species records are added to Ecuadorian fauna and it is presumed that at least a 10% more of new records will be obtained in the near future. Ecuadorian Pieridae, although in the past many taxa were described from this country, are far from being thoroughly known. One of the most prolific author was Hewitson (1852-1877; 1869-1870; 1870; 1877) who described many species from the collections made by Buckley and Simons . Some of the "Ecuador” citations by Hewitson are pointed out more precisely by the same author (Hewit son , 1870) in his index to the list of species collected by Buckley in remote areas uneasily reached even to-day (V ane -Wright, 1991). An important contribution on Lepidoptera of Ecuador is given by Dognin (1887-1896) who described and listed many new species collected by Gaujon in the Loja area, where typical amazonian and páramo species are included.
