Book Reviews

Redemption Road By John Hart Reviewed by Sue Wilder Former police officer Adrian Wall is released from prison after serving 13 years for the murder of Julia Strange, a murder that he insists he did not commit. His alleged victim's son, Gideon Strange, lays in wait to kill Adrian. Detective Elizabeth "Liz" Black, self-appointed protector of young children, has been a kind of surrogate mother to Gideon since his mother's murder. Unfortunately, shortly after Wall is released, a new victim is discovered in the same place as Julia Strange. Liz, having believed Wall innocent in the past, comes to his aid. Concurrently, Liz is being sought for the murder of two men. She came to the aid of Canning Shore, a teen rape victim who was being held hostage and tortured by the men. Liz has become the hunted instead of the hero because of the appearance of excessive force. These characters are just some of the cast that drive Redemption Road. Past histories, corruption both personal and professional, and unresolved crimes totally drive the plot. The combination of innocent people who are wrongly accused and undelivered justice provide the twists and turns of the story. It has been five years since Mr. Hart's last book. He is one of today's finest writers, producing bestsellers with every book. He is the only writer to win two MWA Edgar Awards in a row. Although his books take place in North Carolina, each one is a standalone. Superbly written, complex characters, and authentic motivations ultimately make Mr. Hart's stories timeless. Redemption Road is approximately 400 pages, a "big book." This reader could not stop turning the pages and read the last 150 pages in one sitting. It was impossible to put down. Although we are only in the first half of 2016, Redemption Road goes on this reader's "best" list, surely to be nominated for every award. And After the Fire By Lauren Belfer Reviewed by Cheryl Kravetz While waiting for orders to return to America, two soldiers go on a sightseeing journey through the war-torn German countryside at the end of World War II. They discover what appears to be abandoned, boarded-up mansion and decide to explore a bit further. While rummaging through some paperwork Henry Sachs finds an old music manuscript by J. S. Bach. As he is looking at the cantata he is confronted by a young girl, pointing a gun at him. Henry reacts instinctively, shooting and killing the girl. Susanna Kessler, Henry's niece, finds the manuscript in 2010 while cleaning out Henry's home in New York after he has committed suicide. Along with the cantata, Susanna finds a note her uncle wrote, hinting at his time spent as an American soldier in Germany during WWII. Susanna is surprised by what she finds and begins a journey to locate the rightful owner of the document. This captivating novel is based on real historical events that the author has skillfully woven into an unforgettably haunting story. I found And After the Fire very difficult to put down. As in her first book City of Light, Belfer grabs the reader from the beginning and holds on until the last sentence. She is an extremely gifted author. I can't wait until her next book. Don't miss And After the Fire. The story and its characters will stay with you for a long time, long after the book is finished. HarperCollins 26.99

Illegal Intent By Gregg E. Brickman Reviewed by Stephanie Saxon Levine Tony Conte is the emergency department's nursing manager at Sawgrass Medical Center in South Florida. A former Special Forces medic and martial arts expert, he doesn't seem a likely target for attack in the hospital parking lot. Yet, after the attack, he wakes up on a stretcher and the hospital's CFO, whom he was walking to her car, is dead. Tony becomes a person of interest in the investigation into her murder. When Tony finds that someone has been embezzling money from the hospital, his questions anger the management and bring him unwanted attention from criminals. Having law officers and thugs after him, he must call on all of his talents to keep his job, and, perhaps, his life. In Tony Conte, Gregg E. Brickman has created an admirable, smart, sharp, and sympathetic protagonist. A widower with three children, Tony faces huge demands on his time from home life and his career, without the added burdens of recovering from serious injury and solving a murder. He handles it all in a most believable fashion, bringing his combined brains and brawn to the task. I particularly enjoyed the verisimilitude that Brickman brings to the several settings in which Tony functions. His family life at home with his Italian mother and the children seems very real to me. The hospital scenes reflect the author's many years as in the nursing profession. The romance which develops between Tony and Laurie, a nurse on staff, is charming and adds another dimension to the protagonist and this thoroughly enjoyable and suspenseful mystery. Highly recommended. Signed by the author: 12.99
