It is not merely a means of livelihood; it is the precious treasure of the noble tradition of giving, bestowing.” Sh. Narendra Modi e Hon'ble Prime Minister g Panjab University, Chandigarh is one of the premiere institutes of higher education in India established in 1882 in pre-independence Lahore. It has also the honour of being one of the first four universities established during the British rule in India. In the year 1919, the a University started its own teaching departments. Thus, the year 2019 happens to be the centenary year of teaching at the Panjab University Campus. s The University has secured 'A' grade in NAAC evaluation with a score of 3.35 on a four point scale. The Department of Physics is ranked number one by the US News rankings 2018 amongst Indian Institutions. e While universities often are at an advantage in enabling students to develop deep knowledge, they must also have the right model of education to suit a range of interests and career aspirations. Entrepreneurial skills will be needed if young people are to create their own jobs in the future, for which they need career advice and work place experience to develop and apply their skills in an occupational context. M The University has the honour of creating various illustrious alumni like Prof. Hargovind Khurana, Noble Laureate; Prof. S.S. Bhatnagar (Founder Chairman of UGC & Founder President of INSA); Prof. Yash Pal (Eminent Physicist & Former Chairman of UGC); Prof. Manmohan Singh and Sh. I.K. Gujral (Prime-ministers); Smt. Sushma Swaraj (Union Minister); Smt. Kirron Kher (Member of Parliament) and Justice Jagdish Singh Khehar (Former Chief Justice of India), to name a few. Universities historically exist as institutions for the creation and dissemination of knowledge and play an important role as leaders in teaching and learning, education, research and technology. In teaching activities, universities provide professional training for high level jobs, as well as the education necessary for the development of personality. The role of Universities is very important in all sectors from the social as well as cognitive point of view. Universities can help in providing the new knowledge and skills needed to meet the challenges of sustainable development in a community, raising public awareness and providing pre- conditions for informed decision making, responsible behaviour and consumer choice. Universities have been regarded as key institutions in processing social change and development. The most important role they have been assigned is the production of highly skilled manpower and research output to meet perceived targets. Another role that Universities may play is in the building of new institutions of civil society, in developing new cultural values and in training and socializing people for the inclusive growth of society. Panjab University has to keep pace with change, move ahead in tune with the times and reinforce its impact in the field of education. Its work culture is patterned on the principles of efficiency and performance, moving towards a well defined vision of the future based on strategic planning and effective restructuring. The vision of this historic university is to attain and retain its coveted position as a premium institution engaged in the creation, preservation and dissemination of knowledge, new ideas, perception and methodology through quality teaching, research and outreach activities for developing intellectual capital to meet societal needs and global challenges. The most important contribution that Panjab University can make to higher education is to perform its role in society by being sensitive to the needs of the students and the skill set that they will need, the challenges that they are going to face in society. To attain these goals, pedagogy needs to be student centered. Quality education is required at all levels for the beneficial and productive generation of unbounded vigor and passion of the youth. Pursuing its vision of being a global player, Panjab University has continued its evolution with the signing of MoUs.
