Japanese Geotechnical Society Special Publication The 15th Asian Regional Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering ISSMGE Fifteenth Asian Regional Conference - Conference summary The 15th Asian Regional Conference took place in Methane Hydrate Production by Geotechnical Fukuoka, Japan, from date 9th to 13th of November, Engineering 2015, co-organized by the International Society for Prof. Jorge Gabriel Zornberg (USA): New Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering Frontiers of Geosynthetics Application in (ISSMGE) and the Japanese Geotechnical Society Geotechnical Engineering (Mercer Lecture) (JGS). It attracted 929 participants from 34 countries In addition to the USBs distributed to the and 560 papers were accepted. The conference theme conference participants, all the papers including of “Innovations and Sustainability”, which indicates invited lectures have been electronically published not only new technologies and methods in with DOI from Japanese Geotechnical Society Special geotechnical engineering but also the sustainability of Publication (JGSSP). JGSSP is the publication series human resources in the geotechnical engineering newly launched by JGS, freely accessible from community, is recently attracting heavy concern from www.jstage.jst.go.jp/browse/jgssp. the engineering discipline. In addition, this conference was characterized by the following two issues. (1) Engineering Session Day (ESD) ISSMGE members are from both academia and engineering practice working in the fields, and thus the fusion of those two members is one of the most important issues for sustaining our society. In this 15ARC, we organized a special event called “Engineering Session Day (ESD)” in which we set one full day (November 11) for this event and it included another 7 keynote lectures introducing world-class big projects and 1 special lecture from Japan. There are also technical sessions mostly presented by practitioners. In addition, a discussion Figure 1. All the from industry–government-academia. The special and accepted papers were provided the opportunity to keynote lectures in this ESD were delivered as what make an oral presentation, and more than 400 papers follows; were presented in the parallel technical sessions. The Special Lecture: invited lectures were delivered as follows; Dr. Hisakazu Ohishi (Japan): The History of the Prof. Kok Kwang Phoon (Singapore): Statistical Country Formation in Japan -That solves the Characterization of Geotechnical Information Mystery of the Japanese- Prof. Gang Zheng (China): Ground Deformation Keynote Lectures: Control due to Underground Construction in Dr. Za-Chieh Moh (Taiwan): Challenges in China Recent Underground Construction in Taiwan Prof. S. Consequently, every participant is happy. However, the registration fee can be US 800 – 1200 $ which is not easy for everybody to pay. Because the conference quality is very good, there is nothing to be blamed in the recent trend. In Asia, participation of international events requires long and expensive air flights and, hence, there should be some good idea to help participants, which is LCC. The Fukuoka conference offered the early registration of approximately US 420 $ and the full Photo 3 Technical tour registration of 500 $. Furthermore, accommodation was available at 60 $/night with breakfast, air conditioning, internet etc. at 5 min. walk from conf. venue. This low cost was made possible only with the enthusiastic contribution of many people as well as the financial supports by public and private sectors. They are sincerely appreciated by the organizing committee. The next conference of this series will be held at the City of Taipei in the year of 2019. Photo 1 Presidential address at Opening Ceremony by Prof. Roger Frank .
