The public squares are filled once more. There’s a hope on the street corners, a hope in each and every one of us. It is as if most of the nation had been taken by an uncontainable need to vomit at the sights of all this shamefulness. Paulo Freire, 2006: 2 Only a few miles of night, the moist distances of the country dawn, a handful of earth separated us, the transparent walls we did not cross, so that life later put between us the seas and the earth, and we came together in spite of space, seeking each other step by step, from one ocean to another…regaining earth and life. -

The Last Resistance by Jacqueline Rose, Verso, 2007, 237 Pp
The Last Resistance by Jacqueline Rose, Verso, 2007, 237 pp. Ben Gidley Jacqueline Rose’s The Last Resistance is a fascinating, erudite, often dense, frequently insightful work. It is a collection of Rose’s recent public addresses and occasional writings, from periodicals such as the London Review of Books and the New York Review of Books, on a cluster of topics to do with psychoanalysis, Jewishness, Zionism, the legacy of the Holocaust and the power of literature. There are three outstanding pieces: ‘Born Jewish,’ on the great Belgian socialist, Marcel Liebman, [1] ‘Continuing the Dialogue,’ on the late Edward Said, [2] and ‘On Gillian Rose,’ a moving tribute to her sister. [3] It contains some nice prose – for example: ‘When [David] Grossman uncovers the wounds of the Jewish psyche, he reveals scar tissue which, as it hardens, will not let the nation breathe.’ (p. 115) Its style – frequently because of the orally delivered origins of the collected texts – is marked by ellipses, m-dashes, asides, fragmentary non-sentences; this means the meaning often slips through your fingers. This is both good and bad: bad because it can be difficult to get Rose’s point, but good because the topics, and thus the arguments, are complex, difficult, and it is only right that the reader should work hard. The book makes a claim towards some kind of coherence as a publication, but it is extremely uneven: there is a great deal of repetition, and some of the themes that fade in and out are left frustratingly un-developed. Not enough effort was made to edit the disparate pieces into one book. -

Party Leadership Selection in Parliamentary Democracies
University of California Los Angeles Party Leadership Selection in Parliamentary Democracies Adissertationsubmittedinpartialsatisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Political Science by Florence Grace Hoi Yin So 2012 c Copyright by Florence Grace Hoi Yin So 2012 Abstract of the Dissertation Party Leadership Selection in Parliamentary Democracies by Florence Grace Hoi Yin So Doctor of Philosophy in Political Science University of California, Los Angeles, 2012 Professor Kathleen Bawn, Chair My doctoral dissertation begins with this puzzle: why do large, moderate parties sometimes select leaders who seem to help improve their parties’ electoral performances, but other times choose unpopular leaders with more extreme policy positions, in expense of votes? I argue that leadership selection is dependent on both the electoral institution that a party finds itself in and the intra-party dynamics that constrain the party. Due to a high degree of seat- vote elasticity that is characteristic of majoritarian systems, replacing unpopular leaders is a feasible strategy for opposition parties in these systems to increase their seat shares. In contrast, in proportional systems, due to low seat-vote elasticity, on average opposition parties that replace their leaders su↵er from vote loss. My model of party leadership selection shows that since party members can provide valuable election campaign e↵ort, they can coerce those who select the party leader (the selectorate) into choosing their preferred leader. When selectorate members are moderate, extreme leaders may emerge if non-selectorate members credibly threaten to withhold campaign e↵ort. The more that the extreme non- selectorate members value issue advocacy over the party’s electoral welfare, the more extreme the chosen party leader is. -
