The moss genus Tortella (Pottiaceae) is re-examined for continental North America north of Mexico. Tortella alpicola is distinguished from T. fragilis as an uncommon but widespread taxon. Tortella japonica is considered to be a minor variant of T. humilis. Tortella rigens is new to the United States on the basis of comparison of American material with that of Europe, previous reports being erroneous. Tortella nitida is redescribed from authentic material and is excluded from the North American flora. The hitherto European Tortella tortuosa var. fragilifolia is reported from American plant populations. Tortella inclinata var. densa is reported as new to North America as a comb. nov. The bipolar distribution of Tortella fragilis is confirmed. Tortella inclinata var. inclinata is excluded from the flora of Arctic North America—specimens on which the species were cited were found to be T. inclinata var. densa instead. This study of the genus Tortella in continental North Tortella alpicola, as T. fragilis var. tortelloides American north of Mexico was especially undertaken to S. W. Greene, once claimed to be conspecific to or address certain problematic taxa. We analysed a representative selection of species traditionally assigned to the genus Barbula, believed to represent the largest genus of the moss family Pottiaceae, but which recently was suggested to be polyphyletic. Special attention was paid to species traditionally assigned to Barbula sect. Hydrogonium and sect. Convolutae, in which phylogenetic relationships are likely to be incongruent with morphological traits, which could have evolved in adaptation to hydric and otherwise extreme habitats. Our phylogenetic analysis was based on nrITS and chloroplast rps4 and trnM-trnV sequence data and resolved only the type of the genus, B. unguiculata, plus B. orizabensis, in subfamily Pottioideae, while most of the species occurring in the Northern Hemisphere are part of Trichostomoideae and need to be recognized within the reestablished and partly redefined genera Hydrogonium and Streblotrichum. The phylogenetically and morphologically divergent B. bicolor needs to be removed from Streblotrichum to a newly described genus, Gymnobarbula. Numerous taxonomic changes and nomenclatural novelties, resulting from the molecular, morphological and nomenclatural studies are proposed for taxa of Hydrogonium, particularly within the H. -

Assessment of Liverwort and Hornwort Flora of Nilgiri Hills, Western Ghats (India)

K. RAWAT Abstract. Bryophytes are an important part of the flora of the Nilgiri Hills of Western Ghats, a biodiversity hotspot. This paper gives an updated catalogue of the Hepaticae of the Nilgiri Hills. The list includes all available records, based on the authors’ collections and those in LWU and other renowned herbaria. The catalogue of liverworts indicates their substrate and occur- rence, and includes several records new for the Nilgiri bryoflora as well as for Western Ghats. The list of Hepaticae contains 29 families, 55 genera and 164 taxa. The list of Anthocerotae comprises 2 families, 3 genera and 5 taxa belonging to almost all life form types. Recovery Strategy for the Nugget Moss in Canada 2012 RECOVERY STRATEGY FOR THE NUGGET MOSS (Microbryum vlassovii) IN CANADA 2012 Under the Accord for the Protection of Species at Risk (1996), the federal, provincial, and territorial governments agreed to work together on legislation, programs, and policies to protect wildlife species at risk throughout Canada. In the spirit of cooperation of the Accord, the Government of British Columbia has given permission to the Government of Canada to adopt the “Recovery strategy for the nugget moss (Microbryum vlassovii) in British Columbia” under Section 44 of the Species at Risk Act. K.Saito sensu Saito in Japan includes D. nigrescens and D. subandreaeoides (Kindb.) R.H.Zander, the latter newly reported from Japan. Morphological and phylogenetic data from Japanese material clearly segregate these species from each other. In addition, Japanese D. nigrescens shows two groups, with morphological traits supporting the phylogeny, requiring further morpho-molecular evaluation based on broad sampling. Descriptions with analytical illustrations are provided based on Japanese material. Andreaea takakii Sakurai is proposed as a synonym of D. subandreaeoides. Introduction Didymodon nigrescens (Mitt.) K.Saito is a member of a group of Holarctic mosses whose range penetrates deeply into the tropics, including Central America and East Africa (Bednarek- Ochyra 2018). According to the monograph of Japanese Pottiaceae (Saito 1975), the species grows on calcareous rocks or cliffs in montane to subalpine zones, and was known from several localities from Central Honshu and Shikoku. Saito circumscribed the species by the following characters: (1) plants dark brown to blackish-green, (2) stems more or less branched, (3) basal cells of the leaves rhomboidal, sclerenchymatous near the costa, (4) seta moderately thick, strongly flattened when dry, and (5) perichaetial leaves about two times as long as the stem-leaves. -

Status of Stephensoniella brevipedunculata 1 Status of Stephensoniella brevipedunculata in Jammu (NW Himalayas) - India Anil Sharma, Yash Paul and Anima Langer Department of Botany, University of Jammu, Jammu- 180 006 J&K, India e - mail: [email protected] Stephensoniella brevipedunculata Kash., monotypic Indian liverwort, belonging to Division Marchantiophyta, Class Marchantiopsida, Order Marchantiales and Family Exormothecaceae was initially instituted by Kashyap in 1914, when he collected it for the first time from Mussorrie and later on collected it from other parts of Western Himalayas, such as Kulu and Dulchi pass at an altitude of 2,000 to 2,400m (Kashyap, 1929). Later collections were made from different parts of Western Himalaya by various bryologists like Kanwal (1977), Srivastava (1983), Pant (1983), Pant and Tiwari (1995).Udar et al. (1983) in an attempt to assess reasons for disappearance of this prestigious hepatic undertook studies on its detailed reproductive biology. However, Pant (1983) attributed fast increasing urbanization as the main cause for the disappearance of this liverwort from Nainital area of Western Himalayas. This liverwort was considered to be endemic to Western Himalayas only (IUCN, 2000). Tan et al. 1994a, while compiling first ever red list of bryophytes included 50 species (24 mosses, 25 liverworts and 1 hornwort). Subsequently, the list included another 41 taxa, including S. brevipedunculata, thus increasing the number of most endangered bryophyte species worldwide to 91 (Geissler et al. 1997). Preliminary Observations on its population status in NW Himalaya Bryologists from India during last few decades have attributed disappearance of this taxon from its natural home, largely due to habitat destruction caused by various anthropogenic factors like urbanization, tourism, deforestation, vehicular traffic pollution, over exploitation etc (Pant 1983; Bhattacharyya, 2011). -

Five species were recently found or recognized for the first time in the Netherlands. Two species and five varieties were recognized again and several names were adjusted to recent taxonomical changes. The updated version of the checklist can be found on the website of the Dutch Bryological and Lichenological Society (www.blwg.nl). Inleiding In deze publikatie worden aanvullingen op en veranderingen in de Standaardlijst van de Nederlandse blad-, lever- en hauwmossen (Dirkse et al. 1999) gegeven. Aanleiding hiervoor is dat er sinds de laatste aanvullingen (Siebel et al. 2003) al weer een aantal soorten nieuw voor Nederland is gevonden en dat in het kader van het werk aan de uitgave van de Beknopte Mosflora van Nederland en België (Siebel & During 2006) de taxonomische literatuur van de afgelopen jaren is bestudeerd. Hoewel hier juist vanwege de stabiliteit in naamgeving de nodige terughoudendheid in wordt betracht, zijn er een aantal recente naam- wijzigingen uit deze literatuur overgenomen die voldoende onderbouwd zijn door morfologisch en moleculair genetisch onderzoek. De nieuwe standaardlijst is in overeenstemming met de naamgeving in de Beknopte Mosflora van Nederland en België. Wijzigingen en toelichtingen Hieronder worden per achterliggende reden alle aanvullingen en wijzi- gingen in wetenschappelijke namen, Nederlandstalige namen, cijfer- coden en lettercoden in de standaardlijst gegeven.
