ARTICLE IN PRESS Organisms, Diversity & Evolution 5 (2005) 147–159 www.elsevier.de/ode Phylogeny and biogeography of Valerianaceae (Dipsacales) with special reference to the South American valerians Charles D.Bell Ã,1, Michael J.Donoghue Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, Yale University, New Haven, CT 065211, USA Received 22 April 2004; accepted 26 October 2004 Abstract Species of Valerianaceae are a common component of the alpine ﬂora throughout the Northern Hemisphere as well as the Andes of South America.Sequence data from three chloroplast markers ( psbA-trnH intron, trnK-matK intron, and the trnL-F region) along with the internal transcribed spacer region (ITS) of nuclear ribosomal DNA were used to infer relationships within Valerianaceae.Both genomes, as well as a combined data set, provide support for the major clades within the group and do not support a monophyletic Valeriana.In addition, these data indicate that Plectritis is nested within South American Valeriana, as opposed to being sister to Centhranthus as previously hypothesized. Valerianaceae appear to have originated in Asia, probably in the Himalayas, and subsequently to have dispersed several times to Europe and to the New World.Our results imply that Valerianaceae colonized South America on multiple occasions from the north.In one of these cases there appears to have been a substantial and rapid radiation, primarily in the high elevation paramo habitat.A variety of methods were used to estimate divergence times to determine when Valerianaceae might have colonized South America.Regardless of the method and fossil constraints applied, our estimates suggest that Valerianaceae colonized South America prior to the formation of the Isthmus of Panama.

STUCKEY3 Department of Botany, The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan ABSTRACT From 1836 to 1840, John Samples, an Urbana, Ohio, school teacher and self-taught botanist, assembled one of the earliest collections of vascular plants from southwestern Ohio. Today his collection is preserved in the University of Michigan Herbarium. Of Samples' personal life, little is known except of his teaching. He conducted a pri- vate school in Urbana from 1833-1838 and taught briefly in Cincinnati in 1839. More is known of his botanical studies since he corresponded with John Torrey and Charles W. Short, two well-known botanists of the day. From these letters we learn that without the aid of "an instructor or anything indeed" he began his herbarium in the spring of 1836. The record of his botanical work ends abruptly in June of 1840. Cedar Swamp, the Mad River and its tributaries, Wisham's Pond, Dougan Prairie, and the "barrens" were among his favorite collecting sites in Champaign County. Here he not only secured most of the common plants of the region, but also some plants which have either never or rarely been collected in the area since. He also gathered plants in Hamilton, Logan, Madison, Miami, and Scioto counties. Plants from his friends' gardens indicate that he had an interest in gardening. In this study, 490 of his specimens have been located. A list of these plants with his original notes serves to document the natural flora of the Mad River valley as it was known in his day.

The phytochemical constituents identified in valerian root are essential or volatile oils (monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes), iridoids or valepotriates and pyridine-type alkaloids.[1] It has been pharmacologically proven in animal models for anxiety[12-14], depression[15,16] stress[17], sedative[18-25] [26] and anti-spasmodic properties. In clinical studies it has been pharmacologically proven for premenstrual [30] [31] [27-29] [32-37] syndrome and menopausal syndrome while in clinical trials its efficacy as anxiolytic and sedative remain inconclusive.
