In the year that we in University College Cork celebrate the 200th anniversary of George Boole, it is our pleasure to intro- duce the fifth volume of the Boolean, which presents snapshots of Postgraduate Research at University College Cork. In The Boolean we aim to promote the calibre of digital think- ing and diverse research projects at our University. In order to have their articles included in The Boolean, authors have to describe their re- search using non-specialist language, so that the wider community can understand it. However, in some rare cases these moments get shadowed due to the poor health of the new-born. Almost 1 in 5 preg- nancies gets complicated and around 10% of all babies require admission to the special care unit due to problems of delivery. Brain injury at the time of birth, due to lack of oxygen or blood in the brain, may cause neural dysfunctions or death in severe cases. In fact, it accounts for a third of all neonatal deaths globally and is the most common cause of long term severe neurological disability in neonates. Source: Neonatal brain research group, UCC, Cork The problem with detecting brain injuries in neonates is that, in most cases the babies do not show any clear physical signs of the undergoing brain damage. In order to find such hidden brain injuries, the electrical activity of the brain is monitored using a method called Electroencephalography. Tiny electrodes (Figure 1b), are attached on the neonate’s head to record the brain signals known as Electroencephalogram (EEG). EEG is considered the gold standard for detecting the timing and nature of neonatal brain injuries. Moreover, it also helps in monitoring any progression or improvement in the brain injury after the treatment is initiated.

In August 1824, it is recorded in the Cork Constitution newspaper that John Dooley of the Ferry Walk Sunday’s Well claimed compensation in consequence of the new Wellington Bridge to be built near the western end of the Mardyke. Mr Dooley claimed that his ferry rights would be injured. He had held the ferry for many years, but on cross-examination he admitted that he had no exclusive rights.

    CENTENARY TIMELINE FOR THE COUNTY OF CORK (1920 – 1923) – WAR OF INDEPENDENCE AND CIVIL WAR Guidance Note: This document provides hundreds of key dates with regard to the involvement of County Cork in the War of Independence and Civil War. These include the majority of the key occurrences of 1920 – 1923 including all major events from the County of Cork (including some other locations that involved people from County Cork), as well as key developments on the national level (or elsewhere in the country) during this timeframe (blue). All key ambushes, attacks and executions are included as well as events that saw the loss of life of Cork people, whether in Cork County or further afield. A number of notable events pertaining to Cork City are also included (green) and a details/link section is provided to indicate the source material. Big House Burnings Donnelly, Jr. in County Cork during the Irish Revolution, 1920–21* Introduction The burning of Big Houses belonging to landed Protestants and the occasional Catholic was one of the most dramatic features of the Irish Revolution of 1919–23. Of course, the Protestant landed elite was only a shadow of its former self in the southern parts of Ireland by the time that revolution erupted in 1919. But even where land- owners had sold their estates to their tenants, they usually retained considerable demesnes that they farmed commercially, and they still held a variety of appointments under the British crown—as lieuten- ants or deputy lieutenants of counties and as justices of the peace. Symbols of an old regime in landownership that was not yet dead, and loyal to the British crown and empire, members of the tradi- tional elite were objects of suspicion and sometimes outright hostil- ity among IRA members and nationalists more generally. For many Southern Unionists or loyalists with Big Houses and some land, life became extremely uncomfortable and often dangerous after 1919. Nowhere was this truer than in County Cork. The joint committee went into private session at 1.35 p.m. and resumed in public session at 1.45 p.m. Government Plans for Commemorative Events 2020-23: Discussion Chairman: This afternoon’s meeting is to discuss the Government plans and plans through- out the State for commemorative events in the period 2020-23. It is appropriate since we are in the final month of this decade and facing into several years of major commemorative events. It will be of great value to the committee, and, I hope, to the public, to discuss the plans that exist for the coming years. A. Rempel NUMBER OF PAGES: 264 lll ABSTRACT Over ten thousand Britons fought as police in the First Irish War ( 1920-21 ). Most of these British police were ex-soldiers, veterans of the Great War and members of the Royal Irish Constabulary (RfC), called 'Black and Tans' for their mixed uniforms of dark police green and military khaki. Ex-officers joined a separate force, the Auxiliary Division (ADRIC), a special emergency gendarmerie, heavily armed and organized in military-style companies. Pitted against the guerrillas of the Irish Republican Army (IRA), the Black and Tans and Auxiliaries took many 'reprisals', assassinating Irish republicans and burning their homes and shops. As a consequence, their name became a byword for crime and violence, and the spectre of 'black-and-tannery' has haunted Ireland ever since. This dissertation uses evidence from both British and Irish archives and from British newspapers to study the British police and their behaviour in the First Irish War. According to legend the Black and Tans and Auxiliaries were ex-convicts and psychopaths, hardened by prison and crazed by war.

As Leo Tolstoy described it, "Spring is the time of plans and projects." It is also a time of great hope and optimism as we emerge from a long winter, different to any other we have known in recent years. While we did not experience the severe conditions of winter 2018 brought about by the ‘Beast from the East’, the conditions brought about by the pandemic lockdown brought a different type of severity, one of loneliness and isolation. We are now entering a period of great hope and optimism as the vaccination programme 10 is rolled out to all age groups across the island. Now is the time for new plans and projects as we look forward to adapting to a different, post pandemic world. The Credit Union Art Competition, now in its 37th year, and the Credit Unions Schools Quiz, both covered in this edition, are perfect examples of how credit unions and the ILCU adapted to ensure the many entrants wouldn’t be disappointed this year. Many staff and volunteers accepted art entries through their credit union offices while taking the necessary precautions to follow public health guidelines. Judging for the national final, which took place in February during Level 5 lockdown, was successfully carried out virtually by the panel of judges with the assistance of ILCU staff. The final, hosted by Marty Whelan, will be screened across ILCU social media channels at the end of March.
