Palm Sunday ~ ’ Triumphal Entry Into Jerusalem

In the of the Feast of , Christ is seated upon a donkey as He enters Jerusalem, a fulfillment of the prophecy found in Zechariah 9:9. Christ is blessing with His right hand, and in His left hand is a scroll, symbolizing that He is the fulfillment of the Old Testament prophecies concerning the Messiah, the Anointed One who has come to redeem us from our sins and break the power of death. The donkey, one of the animals that were considered unclean according to the Law, is symbolic of the inclusion of all peoples of all nations in the new covenant that will come through the death and Resurrection of Christ (Isaiah 62:10-11). It is also a sign that our Lord has revealed a heavenly and spiritual kingdom that offers true and enduring peace. Христос посеред нас! Christ is among us!

Feast of the Annunciation ~March 25 Fr. Thomas Rosica, CSB

Standing in the middle of the present day city of Nazareth is the mammoth Basilica of the Annunciation, built around what is believed to be the dwelling of Mary. In a grotto-like room at the heart of the basilica is a small inscription on an altar. It reads, "verbum caro hic factum est," here the Word became flesh. There, it is believed, the angel Gabriel appeared to Mary, and her response changed the world forever.

Imagine yourself in Mary's place, asked to say "yes" to a divine plan so vast, so profound and so seemingly impossible that you cannot comprehend it. "How can this be?" she asks, bewildered. She is rooted in the faith of her ancestors, and yet now an angel has appeared in the midst of everyday life, extending a startling invitation. "You have found favor with God," the angel says, "and you will conceive and bear His Son." Will she accept? It is Mary above all others who can teach us what it means to live by faith, and how to respond when God's providence disrupts the daily course of our lives, overturning its rhythms and expectations. Despite her fears and uncertainty over how this promise could be fulfilled, she still answered "Yes." Are we able to respond to God this way?

When we reflect on the Annunciation to Mary, and her acceptance of the angel's message, we also reflect on our own vocation -- our own calling from God. In the Lord's Prayer, we pray, "Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven" -- an echo of Mary's "Be it done unto me according to your word." Each time we commit ourselves to embracing God's call and accepting His will, we mark a new point on the path of our relationship with Him. For the rest of her life, Mary pondered her extraordinary encounter with God, turning the weight of the angel's message over and over again in her heart. From the manger to the cross, Mary's life was radically changed -- her relationship with God profoundly deepened -- the moment she said "Yes."

Mary received and welcomed God's Word in the fullest sense -- becoming impregnated with it, and bearing it to the world. Angels might not appear in our doorsteps, but we do encounter God in each of our daily prayers, and he whispers to us a similar invitation: Will we accept His love and bring it joyously to those around us? Will we trust in His providence, even when we can't see the path ahead? Amid the noise of everyday life, will we listen for and embrace his call?

When making his pilgrimage to the Basilica of the Annunciation, Pope Benedict XVI offered this prayer to the humble Virgin of Nazareth. It speaks for all of us who likewise seek to accept God's will with joy:

Mary, Mother of the "Yes," you listened to Jesus, and know the tone of his voice and the beating of his heart. Morning Star, speak to us of him, and tell us about your journey of following him on the path of faith.

A question for today: When have I felt that God was calling me to something greater than myself? When have I succeeded, and when have I failed, in accepting His will? What was the outcome of those situations? Mar 24 & 25 Mar 31 & April 1

Holy Week

We have begun the most sacred time of the church year, . It is not merely a time to remember events of the past. On the contrary, we are invited to participate in the last days of Christ on earth. We are called to experience the sufferings and death of Jesus so that we may gloriously share in the Resurrection of Christ. Each day of this week is special.

Lazarus Saturday & Palm Sunday introduce us to Holy Week. Yesterday's Gospel proclaimed how Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead. This miracle not only foreshadows what is to come but also proclaims that Christ is the Giver of Life. On that first Palm Sunday, after hearing about this great miracle, people gathered in Jerusalem to welcome Jesus as King. Today we are asked to declare our allegiance to Christ, our King and God.

Holy Monday, , & are known as the Bridegroom Days. The general theme of these days is our need to be prepared. The Scripture passage that is associated with these days is the parable of the ten virgins. Five of them were not prepared, but the five who filled their lamps with oil were prepared to receive the bridegroom. Christ is the Bridegroom. During the Presanctified Liturgy of Holy Wednesday, we are invited to receive the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. This Sacrament is usually given to those who are ill. Once a year, the Church invites all the faithful during this service to receive this sacrament which is for the healing of our bodies and for the forgiveness of all our sins. This is certainly a beautiful way to prepare ourselves for the rest of Holy Week.

Holy Thursday is the day that Jesus shared in the with His disciples. The bread and wine of this meal became the Body and Blood of Christ that gives us eternal life.

Good and Holy Friday is the day that, we commemorate the Passion and Death of Jesus through three special services.

Holy Saturday The Gospel read during the Divine Liturgy on this day announces the finding of the empty tomb. The service of also proclaims the destruction of Hades by Christ.

Holy Pascha On Easter Sunday, we celebrate the Lord's Glorious Resurrection, and we proclaim Xpucmoc Bockpec! - Christ is Risen! We gather at Resurrection and sing This is the day the Lord has made; let us be glad and rejoice in it! Our rejoicing continues in the Divine Liturgy where we hear the Gospel proclaimed in as many languages as possible. The , a special bread representing the Risen Lord, is blessed at the Liturgy and will be distributed to all on Thomas Sunday. In the evening, Resurrection will be celebrated. Throughout this day we proclaim to one another Xpucmoc Bockpec! - Christ is Risen! HOLY WEEK & EASTER 2018
