Ecotourism Guide to NATURA 2000 Network Areas on Crete
Ecotourism guide to NATURA 2000 network areas on Crete Be part of it, protect it! Operational Programme for Crete and the Aegean Islands Co-financed by Greece and the European Union Preface Dear friends, The past, present and future of Crete are inextricably bound up with its exceptional natural environment. Rich biodiversity, a significant number of endemic species, a variety of ecosystems and landscapes of outstanding natural beauty are what characterize our natural heritage. In acknowledging the value of our natural environment’s multiple functions as regards healthy living and quality of life, as well as in implementing our vision of sustainable development, Crete Regional Authority has made the protection, sound management and promotion of our island’s nature its top priority. The NATURA 2000 Network protected areas have a significant role to play in realising that aim, given that they act as key reserves for nature conservation throughout Europe. In publishing this “Ecotourism guide to NATURA 2000 network areas on Crete” we present the NATURA 2000 areas on Crete, highlighting their characteristics and stressing both their value and their prospects for growth. Sculpted by time and six thousand years of human history, our island’s nature is a common good each of us can enjoy, while also being under the obligation to protect it. We can only hope that through this guide we will all come to better know the NATURA 2000 protected areas, and understand the need to protect them. Chapter 29 from the Isthmus of Hierapetra to Siteia and the Coast to Khandras
29: HIERAPETRA TO SITEIA AND THE COAST TO KHANDRAS CHAPTER 29 FROM THE ISTHMUS OF HIERAPETRA TO SITEIA AND THE COAST TO KHANDRAS Hierapetra The town lies on the east side of a sandy spit, at the end of which is the square Turkish castle. This has battlements and towers at the corners like a small Frangokastello.1 IMG_5423 Castle at Ierapetra, 15 April 2013 Hierapetra. 19 October 1917:2 On the castle over the outside gate a, a wall which seems a later addition to the original plan and built across from tower to tower on the land side, is a Turkish inscription with the date ۱۱۰۷ = 1107 + 588 = 1695. But the ۱۱ is not very clear. The old entrance is an arched gateway, b. The buildings round the court have terraced roofs. The tower c is the only one at all higher than the others. In front of the castle are a few remains of the Roman harbour, and a piece of the old mole runs out from the east part of the town. All round the present town are scanty remains of the ancient town, the Roman town, a good deal more destroyed now than when Spratt saw it.3 There was until lately a wall round the old part of the town by the castle. This was destroyed by the French during the occupation with the futile idea that this would bring together the Turks, who for the most part lived in the old town inside the walls, and the Christians, who lived outside in the newer houses inland of the wall. -
Mountain Villages East of Ierapetra
Mountain villages east of Ierapetra Sources: www.crete-today.com and www.ierapetra.gr Photos: www.crete-today.com and my own Agios Ioannis Agios Ioannis is a small traditional village built at the slope of the hill “Katalimata” 500m above the sea level and 18 km away from Ierapetra. As you ascend the way to the village you enjoy an unlimited view of the settlement. The picture is impressive and prepossesses you for a pleasant walk in its traditional narrow roads. Unfortunately when you arrive and get out of your car, your former impression will change. You will face entire neighborhoods completely desolated. You will walk across roads, where only ruins and rubble rule. In 1583 the Venetians called the village San Zuanne, with a population of 157 inhabitants. In 1940 Agios Ioannis reached its heyday with 752 inhabitants and the village throbbed with life. Now the only people who are interested of buying the ruins and the old houses are foreigners who want to renovate them for a holiday home. The former inhabitants of Agios Ioannis have moved down to the coast, where the touristic development and the agricultural development (greenhouses) help their easier and better living. The scene you will face is full of antithesis. In a magic landscape with an open view to the Libyan Sea it is located this hidden paradise. Though it is a desolated village, we consider it as the most attractive village at the south-eastern Crete. It is considered the “Lastros” of the south, though uninhabited. Schinokapsala Combining the beauties of the mountain with those of the sea, the local community of Schinokapsala stands out for its impressive mountainous relief. -
