OUR PEOPLE // Life Members

At the Annual General Meeting of the Metropolitan Caloundra Surf Life Saving Club on 31 May 2014, Kirsten Phillips was elected as the 40th Life Member of our Club. This was in recognition of more than 25 years as a member of our Club, since she joined as an 8 year old Nipper in 1985.

Kirsten obtained her Bronze Medallion in 1982, and has obtained more than 20 other surf lifesaving awards in- cluding Training Officer and Assessor. She has held numerous positions within the Club and Branch including Club Captain and Secretary and Branch Director of Lifesaving and Branch Director of Membership Development.

She was also awarded the prestigious Queensland Surf Life Saver of the Year award in 2005/2006.

This is a well deserved recognition for a proud second generation member of Metropolitan Caloundra SLSC.

In a special celebration on 8 November 2014, Kirsten was presented with her Life Membership plaque along with our 38th and 39th Life Members, Matt Richards and Robert Schwartz. They were presented by Patron and local MP Mark McArdle, Vice Patron Cr Tim Dwyer and Sunshine Coast Branch President John Thorpe.

MANAGEMENT // President

The 2014 – 2015 season has been one of consolidation and achievement of some major goals. Our vision is to be the leading mid tier surf life saving club on the Sunshine Coast. To this end, I present an overview of:  what we have achieved this year  what areas need more work and improvement, and  the challenges I see ahead.

I have purposely not touched on the individual areas of delivery within the club, as the officers responsible for those areas have provided independent reports, which are included within this annual report. I encourage you to read such reports. Major Achievements this year We did not have a fatality on our beach throughout the patrol season. This in the main, was due to us being able to man patrols with well trained patrol members having the appropri- ate awards to ensure we delivered a highly professional service. As you would appreciate this is not an easy task, without the support we have received from many club members in assisting in the leadership, training and assessing areas. We had a large number of rescues and preventative actions throughout the season, with some of them being conducted in dangerous and challenging conditions. However the interesting picture I see developing is the large number of medical issues we are now being confronted with on the beach, the interrelationship we have with the Ambulance Service and the need for our members to be trained and confident in the delivery of ad- vanced first aide. Thanks go to all of those members who have provided hours of assistance, and to our club captain, Nathan Steer, for the long hours spent in directing the patrols and individual members. Our junior club members continued to grow and develop, under the guidance of Phill Ashworth and Brett Mag- nussen, and assisted by many people who filled positions such as water safety, age managers etc. The end of year breakup provided a picture of that success throughout the year. The management and development of this group of our club was extremely well conducted from all aspects, including child safety and protection. The coaching programs provided by Jeff Morris and the team assisting him, will I hope encourage the older junior members of that group into coming through to performing patrols and other surf type duties. Our financial position was well maintained throughout the year, and the reports and management advice pro- vided to the Board of Management by our Director of Finance, Simon Richards, enabled the Board to make in- formed decisions whilst appreciating and understanding the financial implications. Via Simon’s stewardship, we were able to transfer back $30,000 of funds to our Foundation Committee. From a resource viewpoint, the following are examples of what was achieved.  Obtained grant for new ATV  Installed new air conditioners in dorms  New sleeping facilities for dorms

MANAGEMENT // President

Areas for Improvement Areas where we experienced issues and which I believe are representative of the challenges facing the volun- teer environment in todays’ world, were  not able to fill the position of a marketing and sponsorship person on the Board of Management for the full year.  not able to obtain a full time Chief Training Officer, but with the assistance and direction of Elizabeth Dawes and Kirsten Phillips, we were able man and run programs for our members  we were only able to fill the position of Junior Development Officer for part of the year.

These are extremely important sections of our club’s delivery system, and I ask and encourage all of you as members, to consider such positions at the forthcoming AGM. To manage our club, we need people prepared to assist. Within our ranks we have many people with a large variety of skill sets and experience that could pro- vide valuable assistance. Where are we heading  Each year, the topic of member growth, retention and development, is an often discussed matter. Our membership base in essence has remained steady. However to be able to address all area of surf patrol and development, we need more members who are willing to assist in the patrol operations of the club. Our service agreement with the Sunshine Coast Council identifies the Happy Valley and Shelly Beach areas as secondary patrol areas. To address the needs of our beach, plus these secondary areas, requires more highly trained and equipped members. This is an extremely important area which I recommend the Board of the forthcoming season, places great emphasis. An extremely important feeder into the area of bronze member holders is the growth and development coming out of the junior section of the club. These numbers are growing, but we are faced today of being relevant and attractive to the younger age set such as the fourteen and fifteen year old members, where there are so many offerings in the community competing for their attention and contribution. We have leadership programs etc, but we must and should develop this important area further within the next season.  Developing our surf sports area right across the board, from master competitors through to the nippers. Our goals must be to being recognised as a serious competitor club, but also with the culture of being a team, and enjoying the team environment. To do this, we need to be able to fund more development into the surf sports area, by providing more coaching assistance across the group, as well as equipment. These matters leads me then into the next major challenge.  To obtain a major sponsor who wishes to be associated with an extremely proud and well respected surf life saving club in our community. To provide the resources we need to cover all facets of our club requires a substantial amount of money. We have with guidance from our Director of Finance, moved to a footing where we have re-established our financial position onto sound grounds, but without greater funding, we cannot do or provide those facilities you require and deserve.

Metropolitan-Caloundra Surf Life Saving Club 2014-2015 9

MANAGEMENT // President

The days of having a major sponsor who is prepared to support the club, but not expect or require a major re- turn on their funding, is becoming very rare. We have a major sponsor in Control Logic, who has assisted us for many years and not asked for a return on their contribution. However to grow and develop, we require far greater funding via sponsorship. We have to address this issue going forward. With the major advancements made by our Supporters Club, Mets on Kings, and the achievements of our members on the beach, we now have a very marketable image. We need the resources and skills to capitalise on this position. Major matters happening There are two major type events happening at the moment, which are very important in our clubs’ development into the future. After our 2015 AGM, we have a Special General Meeting to discuss, and if the members deem appropriate, adopt a new Constitution, based on the model developed by Surf Life Saving Queensland. I and our Board thank Stephen Maitland, assisted by our honorary club solicitor, Geoff Lyons, who has taken up the desire dis- cussed for a new constitution at the 2014 AGM, through to a model document that your Board has recommend- ed for your approval. Mets on Kings – Our building sub committee, lead by Alan Macklin, have and are still working extremely hard, on the redevelopment of our Supporters and our own clubs’ infrastructure. We thank all members of the sub committee for their efforts. I urge every one of you to support and enjoy the facilities of our Mets on Kings, both upstairs and the Pavilion Cafe. In closing, I would like to thank the members of the Board of Management. The efforts of these members in providing guidance and development of the club, has seen the club continue to grow into the future. To Jeff, Kerri, Matt, Nathan, Phill and Simon, thank you.

MANAGEMENT // Planning and Administration

After assisting Simon Richards the previous year, I was ready to take back on the role of Secretary for Met Caloun- dra SLSC for the 2014-2015 season and this was made much easier with the assistance of many other members.

We have increased our social media presence and put great quality content on our Facebook page, which also saw one post ‘liked’ over 90 times and the video viewed over 4,500 times, with it being seen/commented on as far south as Victoria and east to New Zealand. We are also looking at an easier to navigate website in the off season.

We also rebranded our e-newsletter, gave it a fresher look for further communication with our members and a new name of ‘Kings Beach News’. This newsletter is particularly useful to promote and educate members as well as informing them of prudent information. We unfortunately don’t (and have never) seem to have a high success rate with the newsletter being “opened and read” – hopefully this improves next season.

Our social bbq’s weren’t held as frequently as previous years, but the few that we had were well attended by a great mix of members.

Again, we saw the ‘one cap, one club’ across all the ‘nippers’ and ‘seniors’ of our Club and the bond is only getting stronger as the years have progressed.

Fundraising is always an integral part of the Club, and without a dedicated volunteer taking on the Marketing and Sponsorship role it was always going to be difficult this season. However, it was disappointing to see so few mem- bers assist in our annual ‘Surf Safe Appeal’ (previously known as House to House). As a result, we missed out on much needed additional income for our Club. Moving forward it is important that all members and their family/ friends support this event, it is spread over 2 weeks with a date/time to suit everybody and gives ample opportuni- ties of collection places including shopping centres, train stations etc.

Whilst on fundraising, huge thanks are needed to Carla Dreyer and her band of helpers for successfully organising a Race Night at Corbould Park in February 2015 and a Golf Day at Club Pelican in August 2014. Both of these events produced a great income for the club, attracted both members and non members and everybody had a fantastic time. Thanks again Carla!

MANAGEMENT // Planning and Administration

Nippers grew again in membership numbers this season. Having a registrar in David and Berlinda Hyne to handle the mammoth number of enquiries at the beginning of the season and processing the membership forms was an enormous help, and one that really eased the burden.

Thanks also to Jill Ware who organised the stuffing & posting of literally hundreds of membership cards, certificates and medallions over the season.

Special mention to Glen Forbes for also driving the “Buy a Board” campaign for the Supporters Club – which to date has secured over $100,000 of people buying a board for the new deck. Once the deck has been built, I am sure that many a Sunday afternoon will be enjoyed there. PS. It is not too late to buy a board!

There was a period of 8 weeks whilst I was overseas and my sincere thanks to Nathan Steer who assisted by wear- ing many hats over this time, plus his own full time job. Thanks also to Kay Blokkeerus – who assisted in many fac- ets over this time also.

To everybody who contributes in some way to making Met Caloundra SLSC a better club, from the people who come down to assist at the bbq on a Sunday, those that take on an extra beach patrols, give up their precious time to train our new members, or give the Clubhouse a clean when needed, thank you. For those that think they would like to help in some way this coming season, but aren’t sure how or what, please just ask.

Lastly, the most important thank you in my role as secretary is reserved for Simon Richards. Simon has assisted me with various tasks this season, on top of his treasurer and training roles at the Club and I am most thankful.

MANAGEMENT // Finance and Property

The 2014-2015 financial year (12 months ending 30 April 2015) was another year of consolidation in regards to the finance and property of the club.

The Finance and Administration Committee met in July and drafted a budget for consideration by the Management Committee, which approved it in August. Budget submissions for each area were met in full by the committee.

The budget included another year of reduced expenditure in order for the club to finalise a number of outstanding items from previous seasons. I am happy to advise that the majority of the outstanding items have now been met, and will be finalised in 2015-2016.

In relation to performance against the approved budget and last year, I have included a summary below:

Variance Actual Last Variance Profit and Loss Actual FY15 Budget FY15 Budget Year Last Year Gross Revenue 243,234 267,105 (23,871) 284,996 (41,762) Direct Costs 61,004 65,113 (4,109) 75,697 (14,694) Gross Profit 182,230 201,992 (19,762) 209,299 (27,069) Expenses 138,368 173,647 (35,279) 201,855 (63,486) Operating Profit 43,862 28,345 15,517 7,444 36,418 Other Income 77,095 64,192 12,903 132,408 (55,313) Other Expenses 65,328 46,800 18,528 97,633 (32,305) Net Surplus 55,629 45,737 9,892 42,220 13,409

The main variance in relation to revenue and gross profit were across a number of areas, including fundraising, events and training camps.

Expenses have continued to decrease over the past 2 seasons, from $306k in 2012/2013, $200k in 2013/2014 and $138k in 2014/2015. The majority of this reduction has been in total employment costs, down from $162k in 2012/2013, $69k in 2013/2014 and $23k in 2014/2015.

The club was also fortunate to receive a number of grants to purchase capital equipment during the year, as listed below. Many thanks to Kirsten Phillips and Nathan Steer who submitted the majority of the successful applications.

Grant Purpose Amount Qld Government (Caring for our Community) Training Equipment 4,862 Gambling Community Benefit Fund ATV for Lifesaving 27,402 Sunshine Coast Council Training Equipment 1,000 Surf Life Saving Australia IRB Motor 5,000 Surf Life Saving Queensland Radios, life jackets for lifesaving 2,236 Sunshine Coast Council Bunk Beds for dormitories 3,000

Metropolitan-Caloundra Surf Life Saving Club 2014-2015 13

MANAGEMENT // Finance and Property

Apart from the above purchases, the club also made the below capital transactions, drawn from the operat- ing profit of the club:

Description Amount Security Screens 4,456 Storage Cupboards (Nipper Area) 1,800 Air Conditioning (Dormitories and training room) 7,045 Fire Hose Reel 1,877 Nipper Boards (sponsored by Beerwah Hotel) 6,454 Repayment to Foundation Account from 2013 30,000

The final outstanding obligation from prior years is the remaining $20,000 payment required to be made to the Met Caloundra Foundation from the $50,000 advance made to the club in 2012/2013. This payment has been budgeted for next financial year.

The club has now managed to control our expenses in comparison to our operating revenue and also allo- cate funds for the replacement of capital equipment. The next step in the process is to increase our reve- nue to enable the club to grow in other areas. This can only happen with a dedicated marketing/ sponsorship officer and supporting sub-committee, positions that have not been properly fulfilled for a num- ber of seasons.

A big thank you to Life Member Glen Forbes who coordinated the donation of over $100,000 from support- ers to help build the new Club deck. This amount has been recorded on the balance sheet as at 30 April 2015, and will be recorded as income when the deck is built in 2015/2016.

Finally, a big thank you to Debbie Hoogvliet and Kay Blokkeerus who assisted with treasurer duties whilst I was on holidays late in the season and Mike and my felloe Board members for their support.

I look forward to further improvement in the financial position of the Club in the coming seasons and work- ing with the Board and members to achieve our objectives.

Yours truly

Simon Richards Director of Finance and Property

MARKETING // Special Events

Each year we rely on Sponsors, donations and fundraising to raise funds to purchase patrol, nipper and racing equipment for our club. Thank you to our sponsors Control Logic, Dr Nick & Carla Dreyer - Pelican Waters Family Doctors, Engine Swimwear, Rick Gazzard – Beerwah Hotel, Seafood Market Caloundra, Jetts Caloundra, Tile Solutions and Westpac Caloundra for their ongoing support of Metropolitan Caloundra SLSC.

A special thank you to the Clubs Major Sponsor Control Logic, the Bacon Family who have been so generous with supporting our club each major fundraising event and financially each year. Your generosity, kindness and dedication towards the club is astonishing; we thank you. Thank you to our official Media and Radio sponsors Sunshine Coast Daily and Hot 91.1 who help us promote our club each season.

To all of our generous “Event Sponsors”, special guests, event organisers and event committees – a special thank you for your help at our major fundraising events this season. Your support with our successful major fundraising events allows us to achieve our fundraising goals, networking together as a club. This season was a busy one seeing the club hold a Charity Golf day at Pelican Waters Golf Club and a Charity race day event at Sunshine Coast Turf club, both very fun successful events. A massive thank you to my partner in crime Kerry Barlow who always offers her time and support with the major fundraising events for the club.

Thank you to all our patrolling volunteers who provided waters safety at local community events over the sea- son. The club receives donations from these organisations in return for our assistance. Once again our amaz- ing members volunteered their time and supported us as the official water safety for the Tough Mudder event held last August. I would like to extend my thank you to the committee consisting of Nathan, Jacob, Simon and Carl for helping me with all the organizing before the event. This was a challenging weekend for our volunteers with extreme conditions, plenty of rain and a very cold weekend. Seeing our members withstand the elements, mud and very cold conditions enjoying the experience and assisting in a number of rescues and first aid cases over the weekend. Our members also assisted with Kings on the Coast - thank you to our IRB drivers and crew, board paddlers and swimmers who assisted Carl with this event also seeing a number of rescues on the day. Thank you to our volunteer lifesavers keeping the competitors safe during these events. Without your help we cannot be part of these community events promoting our club and raising money.

LIFESAVING // Club Captain

Once again we have had another successful year patrolling Kings Beach and have continued to live up to our motto of ‘Saving Lives Serious Fun’ and achieved no loss of life during the patrolling season and all of our patrolling members should be extremely proud of this data.

This season we have seen a very slight increase in our rescue statistics for the 2014-2015 season with us successfully completing 96 rescues, which is an increase of 1 rescue from the previous season. With such fantastic weather all season compared to the year before, we had a substantial increase in the number of visitors who made their way to Kings Beach. We had over 154,000 members of the public visit on the week- ends during the past season. Our members have continued their positive and proactive approach to the public completing 4,177 preventative actions by guiding, teaching and encouraging the public to continue to follow our surf safety message of swimming between the flags. I feel privileged to say that we have suc- ceeded in preventing the public placing themselves in danger and I thank everyone who has contributed to this during the season and we should all be honoured that we have contributed to saving lives.

I am proud to say that we have patrolled a total of 5,430.75 hours this season which is a fantastic effort. I would like to thank all members of Metropolitan Caloundra SLSC who have continued to devote their time and hard work as volunteers to our club. Whilst our main role is to patrol Kings Beach we have also provid- ed water safety at the Tough Mudder Sunshine Coast across a two day span, Kings of the Coast Ocean Swim and many other small events. It is great to see such dedication, motivation and passion from all of our members who are involved with additional actions. We have continued to receive such fantastic feedback from these events describing what a great asset we were to their organisation.

Our 24 hour response group was very active this year assisting with numerous callouts. Due to the improved weather in comparison with last season we did see a decrease in the amount of callouts across the Sunshine Coast. Some of the major emergencies we have assisted in this year have been the rescue of a kite surfer at Bulcock Beach, assisting in rescuing a wallaby stuck swimming in the Pumicestone Passage and a missing diver off Shelly Beach who returned safely to the shore after being separated whilst in the water. During the season we were also asked to assist SES after substantial rain on the Sunshine Coast, in which we had multiple members raise their hands to assist with helping the community beyond the beach environment. It is great to see how well we are regarded in the emergency services field with SLSQ clubs continually getting asked to assist further when needed.

LIFESAVING // Club Captain

With the hard work frequently being put into the club we have had another successful year in obtaining fund- ing by donations and grants. We have managed to be successful in attaining the Gambling Jupiter’s Benefit Fund grant which finally allowed the club to upgrade our decrepit tractor to a brand new 6 wheel Polaris ATV. This has helped tremendously this season allowing us to provide more assistance on the beach and a quicker response time to any incidents. We also continue to receive support from the Department of Community Ser- vices Lifesaving Development Fund with a successful application obtaining 2 digital radios and a further 8 per- sonal flotation devices to ensure we have enough for our patrolling teams. Without all this support purchasing such equipment would take a considerable toll on the clubs finances, thus we are extremely appreciative of all donations and grants.

I would like to thank Kirsten who helped with assistant CTO during this season, without her support we would not have achieved what we have in the training department. The continued support of all our amazing train- ers, assessors and facilitators who have donated their time does not go unnoticed and our club is very grate- ful. Thank you for all your hard work and dedication this year in providing a massive increase in new and up skilled members. Without the hard work of these people we would not have the patrol teams with the high quality members that we have currently. Not only can our member’s awards and knowledge be used whilst on the beach but their skills are also acknowledged and highly regarded in outside organisations that are not di- rectly associated with Lifesaving.

To all the patrolling members, trainers, assessors and supporters I thank you for your dedication, time and service to Metropolitan Caloundra throughout the season, you are an asset which everybody appreciates im- mensely.

I would like to thank everyone for your continued and appreciated support over the last 3 seasons as Club Captain in which now I will be standing down, however I will continue to support the club in another area.

Yours in Lifesaving

TRAINING & ASSESSMENT // Chief Training Officer

Training new members and upskilling our current members is pivotal in the club delivering its lifesaving ser- vices. As such, the countless hours our volunteer trainers and assessors put into delivering courses and profi- ciencies is certainly appreciated. To all of the trainers and assessors who volunteered time this season, thank you. Thank you for the dedication, professionalism and enthusiasm you bring to the club. While I know this work takes you away from family or other personal pursuits, I hope that you find the time you spend training rewarding and that you can look through the list of members who have completed awards this season and reflect on that as a great achievement for the club.

I have only filled the role of Assistant CTO this season but with no CTO throughout the year the workload was considerably more than expected. A special thank you to Simon Richards, Liz Dawes, Nathan Steer, John Kel- ler and Kerri Dick for their support during the season. There is significant work involved in not only training but coordinating courses for our members. The work behind the scenes 'to make it happen' is easily equal to the hours put in to the actual training and assessing and we could not have delivered the awards we did with- out the work of these members. Simon Richards, in particular, deserves a special mention for the sheer num- ber of hours he put into delivering three bronze squads this season - a mammoth effort.

The club was also again able to deliver a SSS live in program with members gaining their ART and IRBC awards - this program continues to be highly successful in up-skilling our young members and giving them more options to get involved in the club both on and off patrol.

Even though some awards are now being supported at a regional level such as emergency care awards, deliv- ering training and assessment at a club level continues to be a big job. It really does require a team approach and the more members that can get involved in this area the more we can achieve with reasonable volunteer workloads.

If anyone is interested in getting involved in training and assessing please let one of our current trainers or assessors know so we can help you down this rewarding pathway.

Congratulations to all of the members who gained their Bronze Medallion this season - remember this is just the launch pad for your lifesaving journey with plenty more skills to be gained. Well done also to all of the other members of the club who undertook further development this season in gaining new awards. Whether it is completing the age manager award to help with junior activities or gaining your IRB crew award to help your patrol team, all upskilling helps us to build a healthy membership and in turn a stronger club.

Regards

JUNIOR ACTIVITIES // Chairman

Last year’s report started off with some words of wisdom that were imparted to me by my parents. This year I have no words of wisdom, however I am going to start with a story that typifies why we encourage and sup- port our children to participate in the Nipper program here at Met Caloundra. I realise a story is not a report however most reports tell a story in one way or another.

The day was a little overcast and the conditions were somewhat challenging at an U8-U10 Nipper carnival at Redcliffe. I was watching the U9 age group prepare for their board relay. Met Caloundra had two teams in the same event and the same heat. One was an all male team and the other an all female team. I was some distance from the marshalling area so I could not actually hear the banter between the teams however I could tell by the body language that the exchange between the teams was in good spirit, positive and underlined with an element of excitement and fun. At this point, even before the start of the event, the children were winners, they were happy, positive, excited, having fun and sharing the moment with their peers.

The Board Relay race started. There were kids and boards going everywhere. Straight away I saw a small group of children make it through the break and start heading for the cans. Met Caloundra were running 2nd and 3rd. Not only are the children having fun and enjoying themselves, they are also doing very well. There are three teams clearly out in front as they come around the cans and start heading back to the beach, our two competitors, one male and the other female, are in clear 2nd and 3rd place and hit the wave zone and catch the same wave. Both of our competitors come down the wave side by side, talking, having fun and making the most of the skills they have been taught. They are revelling in the moment and are about to hand over their hard work to a fellow team member who they respect and admire. As a parent, this experience typifies what I want for my children. I got this memory from being part of Metropolitan Caloundra Surf Life- saving Club and it will be with me for the rest of my life.

At Mets, our membership numbers are very healthy. This season we had over 270 nippers, up from 240 the previous year. A very special thank you must go to David and Berlinda Hyne, both David and Belinda’s hard work in the role as club registrar was invaluable. Their contribution was a corner stone to the success of the season.

We have a very good base of juniors coming through and our younger groups continue to go from strength to strength. My first group of Green Cap 6 year olds, wary of the ocean, tentative to enter the water and very cautious of their environment have developed into 11 year olds, confident and secure in their environment, aware of their surroundings, capable and competent to swim 150 metres out and back in again. This is just one example of what our Nipper program achieves. Our challenge for the future is to ensure the pathways for ongoing development are clearly identified and accessible.

JUNIOR ACTIVITIES // Chairman

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate our 2015/2016 Nipper Club Captains, Georgia Harle and Audrey Warren and Vice Captains Tayla Ring and Neasan Sheehan.

I would also like to take the opportunity to sincerely thank the JAC Committee. It was a pleasure working with you and your support, encouragement and direction was sincerely appreciated. Next season I will be standing down from the role of JAC Chair but am content in the knowledge that the job is in very safe hands.

I often tell people that we do not truly appreciate what we have here at Met Caloundra. I believe we have some- thing very special and we all should be very proud of what we help create, what we maintain and the people we serve.

SURF SPORTS // Surf Boats

Hey Hey it’s that time of year again, get yourself a coffee or a beer if its after 10am, cause here comes the best reading in this year’s annual report.

This season the Met Caloundra surf rowers put themselves back on the map with some oarsome performanc- es on the big stages. After only having 2 crews last year our based was expanded from an open women’s & reserve grade crew to include an open male & master’s women crews. We also saw the return of the ever stylish red headed sex bomb Mick Bacon.

First Carnival of the season was the Navy double header at Surfer’s Paradise. Mets were represented by the Hammers in the open women’s division. Saturday was a messy 1m of swell with a heavy NE wind & the Hammers with their new lucky charm, Emily Neal made the final on points after 7 races 2nd. Sunday saw a crew change Claire Chapman “Kevin” replaced Emily & condition change to very testing with a 1.5m wave dumping on the shore. The Girls were tested & came out on top finishing in 1st place & being invited to try out for the nation team.

Tugun was our next stop where the traditional program was changed, having a 4 round robin series & points to top six final in the morning & elimination to final in the afternoon. The Hammers only able to make the am carnival bounced their way through the day, letting other crews come to grief in the break then sail past picking up places & valuable points. With a crew change the ladies managed a respectable 4th place in the final.

The Navy ASRL Open saw the Hammers being joined by the Triple JD’s in their first outing. Shellharbour was the host carnival but with conditions being less than helpful the carnival was moved north to Warrilla Barrack Points. The Hammers with 5 crew members have a rotation policy so everyone gets a go but this time after 2 & ¼ races it was game over, getting hit by one of the biggest waves of the weekend. The Triple JD’s in their first outing were a little unsteady at first but did enough to make the cuts & Sunday’s racing. From there it was 1 race at a time, quarter final tick, semi-final tick, final tick. The boys mixed it with the best in the busi- ness, current Aust rep team, national medallist, state champs. It was a close race with the lead changing hands a few times on the way to sea. On the return run 1st place was sorted very early but the minor places still needed to be filled. Mick stuck to his guns & his line which in the made all the difference, 2nd for the boys. In their first carnival is pretty good considering the Navy ASRL Open is as big as the Aussie Titles. Oarsome effort boys.

Back to QLD & the Alex Heads round of the Beko Cup was moved to , glassy & less than a meter made for some tight racing. The Hammers rotated 5 through the boat throughout the rounds & looked con- vincing all day long. Even in the semi-final when testing PFD for SLSA under racing conditions. The Triple JD’s also had a point to prove showing the ASRL result wasn’t going to be a one off, placing in the top 3 in all races. Finals time & all crews were on their A game, unfortunately, the Hammers were run down from behind by some fast finishing crews that had pulled a lucky wave & finished 4th. Triple JD’s also had a battle with a very tight finish, thinking they had safely taken 3rd, but with some good luck were called 2nd across the line. Happy days.

Next stop Noosa Heads where we raced with black arm bands & heavy hearts, as just day’s earlier news of a great coach, mentor, sweep & friend had passed, Robbie Mejier. A handful of Met Caloundra members were lucky enough to have spent time with the great man over the years. Race that day took on a different mean- ing. The Otters made their much talked about season debut, & they made it with a bang. The boys warmed up through the day, getting that racing feeling back, race by race. When the final came they were on fire pulling away from the field to take 1st place. The final format for the open men & women changed, 2 laps, back to back, with a turn in the shallows between races. The Hammers were slow off the beach & in the first leg & from there was hard to catch up. With a mix up in the shallows it was all over, 6th after the 2 laps. Its seams Triple JD’s earned from Molly’s mistakes making a much better fist of things, all crews turned the cans for the first time together. Still nothing in it back at the beach, but the second lap the field started to spread out. Boys held on with everything to finish 4th.

QLD State Titles again another boat carnival moved due to conditions but these things happen, to Alex Heads. Masters Women were the first to hit the water & score first blood. The Mystic lined up against a mixed bunch from 120 to 260+ master men. Finishing 2nd in the race & 1st in their division was a great way to start the campaign. In the open division The Otters looking to back up their last start 1st were very lucky to make the Saturday cut through to Sunday’s racing. Sunday of states is always a good day, 1m of easterly chop was just what our crews wanted. Our crews rowed well in the rounds & eliminations in the quarters, semis & all 3 making their finals. The Otters were the first to hit the trading blows & holding their own against the other 5 crews, fin- ishing just out of the medals in 4th place. Hammers were next & with a little bump & crab they were last off the beach but 1st by the gate cans & that’s how it stayed. The Hammers became the first Met Caloundra Open Wom- en’s crew to win a state title. Triple JD’s lined up against some heavy weights for the state title, after an even start the boys hit the cans first, could it happen open women, open men double? Not this year. A set come & brought the whole field back into the race. After a gutsy effort the boys fell just short of the line, finishing in fourth. 4 crews 4 finals.

Aussie Titles 2015, another carnival where the boats were all on their own. Masters Monday, as always, put on some testing conditions, this year a clean 2m wave made it a great spectators sport. The Met Caloundra Mystic in their 120 women division got to 2 races in what was said to be “the best fun all year” finished on even points & the Gold was shared with Anglesea. The Otters Aussies campaign started on Thursday in smaller conditions but still great for racing. The boys raced well & amassed enough points to make the cut, which put them through to Saturday. Friday saw the Hammers & Triple JD’s being blessed with some enjoyable conditions, both crew also making the cut. The Hammers doing it a little easier than the Triple JD’s but points are points. With all 3 crews back on the beach together the tent had a great feel to it, relaxing & serious all at once. The swell had picked up a fraction, racing was tough 1 mistake & good chance you’d be gone. The Otters raced well before their season was ended in at the top 24 stage. Good effort boys. The Hammers picked up places all day & at the end of the day were still kicking making it to the top 18 in their division. The Triple JD’s made it all the way to the dreaded last race of the day, the race no one like doing. The Boys to their credit raced very well but sometimes you just need a little luck, not today. Top 18 great work. Aussies Sunday, the only day that matters all season. Things felt good, the Hammers used all their bad luck in the warm up, so they had thought. First race saw them knock out last year’s champs, top 12. Next race as the gun went off the boat hit the sand. Despite an effort worthy of the next round they were left 3 foot short. Season over. Top 12, magic effort ladies.

MANAGEMENT // Building Sub-Committee

Well the first part of our first stage of the renovations upstairs in our Supporters Club has been finished. We have launched our new name ‘Mets on Kings’ and it is up there in LED Lights for everyone to see. The next part of our first stage is to move the kitchen, but this will have to wait until we can afford it. I am sure you will all agree that we certainly have got our Best Bang for our Buck. I would like to thank all of our members who vot- ed in support for this work to be done and hope that you are pleased with the result.

Hey, have you been down to the Kiosk for a coffee? What do you think? What a great place to go and see who you can meet up with! I have been amused constantly by the visitors to Kings Beach who peer in from outside the front door and finally gather enough courage to pop their heads in to see what is going on. Then to see their mouths agape looking at all of the old photographs is nothing short of priceless! “What a great historically significant location.” Who thought of that? How about John Buchanan’s historical photos? Hasn’t he done a good job!

I would also like to thank the Building Sub-committee for their vision and relentless dedication to detail. Their perseverance throughout the last couple of years has been an inspiration to us all. Thanks guys.

This year the Building Sub-committee consisted of; Craig Spender, John Buchanan and myself as Chairman. Jeff Morris was our Project Manager and Melissa Brooke was our secretary. Our architects were Brand & Slater Architects from . Together with our Builder, Open Projects and their team of local sub-contractors, tradesmen and local suppliers, we have seen a tremendous transformation from the tired old building into something that we can all be proud of. We would also like to thank our local Council and, in particular, Council- lor Tim Dwyer our Divisional Councillor. Our local state member of parliament, Mark McArdle has also helped us along the way. Without all of these good people’s fantastic advice and invaluable assistance we would not have been able to achieve what we have in the last 12 months.

MANAGEMENT // Building Sub-Committee

We were also overwhelmed by the fantastic support from our supporters and broader community with the gener- osity displayed in our ‘Buy a Board Campaign’ for our proposed timber deck extension on the North-eastern corner of our Clubhouse. Well done Craig Spender for such a great initiative and thank you Glen Forbes for your excellent administration.

It has been disappointing that we couldn’t start construction of the deck, but we are awaiting the Development Approval from Council before we can seek Building Approval to be able to commence work. I can assure you that we have been very active in trying to expedite this work but our hands are tied. We are also working closely with the Sunshine Coast Regional Council to establish a Celebration Point for weddings and memorials in this area near our proposed deck as well.

Watch this space. Hopefully we will be talking in the next annual report about how good it all looks.

Can you all do me a favour please? If you haven’t come down to the new ‘Mets on Kings’ for a meal, then please come down and bring your friends with you. They will be impressed; as I am sure you will be too.

SUPPORTERS CLUB // President Report

So what do you think?

Personally, - I think the “old girl” looks pretty darn good!

After years of planning and a couple of false starts, your Supporters’ Club (now “Mets on Kings”) has finally un- dergone the transformation needed to take us into the future, - and the feedback has been overwhelmingly posi- tive!

There’s obviously still more work to be done to fine-tune operations, introduce new technology and of course, build the new deck (I’m sure Alan Macklin will fill you in on that saga!) but we now have the basis of a sustaina- ble business that can provide much-needed funding for lifesaving operations on Kings Beach.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you, our members, for the having the confidence to proceed with the investment and the patience to wait for the result.

“Mets on Kings” is effectively a new business now and we are still optimising our processes, but initial indications are very, very positive. Sales are up more than 40% on preceding years in the bar and bistro and forthcoming investments in the gaming area should produce similar increases.

…and we haven’t even built the deck yet!

Speaking of the deck, you’re probably wondering what’s happening there?

First the good news. Fundraising for the deck (the “buy a board” campaign – thanks Glen!) has been very suc- cessful and we already have sufficient funds to commence construction. To all those who’ve donated, - our sin- cere thanks!

The bad news is that there are still a few hurdles we need to negotiate with council before we can build.

Yes, - we can now see the light at the end of the tunnel, but it would be nice if they’d stop building more tunnel… Soon, we hope!

As part of the club redevelopment, we also leased and revamped the old Pavilion, - re-establishing its former role as a kiosk. This has attracted a lot of positive attention from the community and the initiative is already returning a profit.

SUPPORTERS CLUB // President Report

For those of you who may not have ventured into the Kiosk since it’s been opened, please drop by, avail yourself of our excellent coffee and have a look at the historical photos that decorate the walls. They’re a great reminder of the rich heritage of Kings Beach and our club’s special place in its history.

In concluding this report, I’d like to sincerely thank and acknowledge the people who have worked so hard (and continue to do so) to make our new club a reality.

Firstly to my fellow board members, Alan Macklin, John Buchanan, Glen Forbes, Jeff Morris, Paul Bounty, Mike McDonald and Melissa Brooke, - I offer my sincere thanks and gratitude for your contributions, your energy and your unyielding commitment. It’s been a privilege to work with you!

Once again I’d like to acknowledge the efforts of Alan Macklin (who is the chair of our building sub-committee). Your time, energy, tenacious resolve and personal financial contributions continue to be invaluable. Thank you!

Secondly, to all the staff of the supporters club (capably led by Melissa Brooke) – your courtesy, friendly disposi- tion and work ethic (particularly during the difficult renovation period) were inspirational. Sincere thanks and keep up the great work!

To Melissa, - your professionalism, dogged determination and commitment helped us through the extraordinarily difficult trading period during the refit and I’m convinced we could not have got through that without you! Thank you and well done!

Finally, I’d like to thank all the Metropolitan Caloundra Surf Club members who have supported our efforts to sup- port surf lifesaving during the year. To Mike, Simon, and the BoM team as well as the wider surf club member- ship, - your patience and on-going support have finally been rewarded and we’re confident those rewards will keep coming in the months and years ahead.

I look forward to having a beer with any/all of you on our new deck in the near future.

In the meantime, come down and enjoy the excellent views, service and food the club has to offer.

It’s your club and you are always welcome!
