DESCRIPTION OF COURSES NOT IN THE 2018-19 ACADEMIC REGISTER *Includes Revised Course Descriptions*

ATH-241: American Musical Theatre Since the 1970’s. Venning, D. This course is a survey of the history and aesthetics of the American musical theatre since the innovations to the form in the 1970s. The course will examine new developments in musical theatre history in the last half-century. Beginning with the works of Stephen Sondheim and advancing through the 1970s “megamusical,” rock operas, to contemporary hits that engage with crucial questions of gender, sexuality, race, and ethnicity that are central to American cultural identity and society today, we will engage with a broad range of works created by leading artists in the American musical theatre. CC: GSWS, AMS

BME-336: Biological Transport: Khetan, S. Basic principles of mass, heat and fluid transport, including derivation of basic equations and simplification techniques. Applications to physiological systems, pharmacokinetics and artificial organs. Prerequisite: CHM-101

CLS-140: Intro to Greek Archeology: Commito, A. For thousands of years, the Aegean has been home to dynamic societies whose complex interactions with each other and with the broader region produced some of the most distinctive cultural and political achievements of the ancient world. This course introduces students to the physical remains these societies left behind. We study key concepts of Greek archeology, including issues of chronology and ethics, as well as major themes in study of the ancient Greek world, such as religion and the emergence of the city-state. Special attention is paid to new developments in archaeological research methods, such as paleoethnobotany isotopic analysis, geophysical prospection, and aerial photogrammetry using drones. We begin around 3000 BCE with the rise of the region’s first complex civilizations, and end around 100 BCE with the transformations brought about by the conquests of Alexander the Great. Along the way, we explore how archaeological investigations reveal the distinctiveness of ancient Greece and help us reconstruct the daily lives of people in antiquity. CC: HUM

CSC-108: Scientific Computing: Webb, N. Computers are used as tools in analyzing and solving scientific problems as well as being embedded in many applications and experimental equipment used by today's scientists. This course is designed to introduce students to computer programming and problem solving through the use of Python. Python is a language commonly used by the scientific community, and we will focus on using it to address scientific problems, using extensions that facilitate scientific computing. CC: QMR, SET Note: A grade of C- or better is required in order to take any course that requires an introductory course as prerequisite. Once one has passed an introductory course with a C- or better, no other introductory course may be taken for credit.

CSC-483: Selected Topics: Advanced Natural Language Processing Techniques: Striegnitz, K. Computer programs that process human language have become increasingly common (such as Siri, Alexa, Google translate, automatic summarization and generation of news). In this class you will learn about the most common techniques currently used by natural language processing applications. This includes discussion of classification, grammars, n-gram and hidden markov models, recurrent neural networks. Prerequisite: C- or higher in CSC-151 or MTH-197 and C- or higher in CSC-150. Note: MTH-199 can be substituted for MTH-197. CC: SET

ECE-371: High Resolution Radar: Pappu, C. Introducing the concepts on the basic theory for design and analysis of radar systems. Radar system, Range equation, signal design, signal processing, high resolution, and providing Range and Doppler information. Prerequisites: ECE 241

ECO-235: Chinese Economy: Cheng, D. This course introduces students to the workings of Chinese economy. It is about the transformation of China's economy into a market economy with its special characteristics. China has the largest population in the world and plays an important role in the global economy. Since the Chinese government initiated economic reform in 1978 from a planned economy toward a market-oriented economy, China has experienced rapid institutional changes and achieved a spectacular economic growth of about 9.5 percent per year. It is therefore necessary for every student concerned with the development of the world to understand the Chinese economy. In this course, students will learn both historical-institutional and theoretical-quantitative approaches to study China's economy. Students will develop a better understanding of Chinese historical background, economic growth, economic fluctuations, and macroeconomic policies. Moreover, students will have a chance to study Chinese banking, financial markets, foreign trade and investment. Prerequisite: ECO-101

ENS-215: Exploring Environmental Data. Stahl, M. Understanding how the earth and environment works requires careful analysis and interpretation of scientific data. Increasingly, the limitations to our understanding lie not in the availability of data, but rather in our ability to analyze and find meaning in it. Deriving insight from environmental data, in particular large and complex datasets, requires new tools, methods, and ways of thinking. In this class we are going to learn how to code in the programming language R and use it to analyze environmental data in order to better understand the Earth’s systems. This course will feature a hands-on classroom with programming and data analysis occurring interactively during the class. Students will learn how to analyze and visualize large datasets and how to write code, while also covering interesting components of environmental and earth sciences. In each section of the course we will explore and analyze a large, research-quality, dataset to introduce environmental concepts and develop skills in data analysis and add additional layers of insight and understanding as new tools and techniques are introduced. Prerequisite: Any 100 level SET or SCLB. CC: SCLB

FLM-321: Making the Mockumentary: de Seve, J. From rock legends that never existed to “found” footage that reveals the final terrifying moments of lost campers, mockumentaries present their too-good-to-be-true tales with a straight face. Often humorous, sometimes scary, iconic mockumentaries like This is Spinal Tap; A might Wind; Borat and even the 1938 radio broadcast of Orson Welles’ The War of the Worlds harnessed real documentary techniques to pull off their hoaxes. Hand-help footage, microphones “accidentally” left on, scenes that are “stumbled upon,” discarded celebrities in search of redemption – these are the stock in trade of the mockumentary. In this class, you will have a chance to pull off your own documentary hoax. You will develop a fake story, strategize shooting techniques and go into production. At the end of the term we will invite the campus community to view your work.

HST-293: History of Medicine: Singy, P. This course offers a survey of the history of medicine in the Western world from the ancient Greeks to the present. We will consider several key moments in this history, such as the so-called “Greek miracle” in medicine (Hippocrates), the discovery of blood circulation (William Harvey), and the invention of bacteriology (Louis Pasteur and Robert Koch). In the last three class sessions we will focus more specifically on the history of psychiatry. All the class readings are primary sources.

MLT 297: Performing Masculinities in Literature, Cinema, and Popular Culture. Garcia, W. This is an exploration of how masculinities (and maleness) are performed and how men perform gender. The course is a survey of literary and cinematic texts in the Hispanic world (Spain, Spanish America, and US Latinx communities) that adopt cross-dressing as a subversive device to question and delegitimize authority at various arenas (heteronormative gender roles, sexual and national identities, state politics and citizenship, and cultural hegemony). It also seeks to dissect binary understandings of gender while exploring the concept as a performative social construct, and establishing connections with and drawing examples from literary production, cinema, and popular culture. From this angle, emphasis will be placed on the performance of socially regulated gender roles whose scripts are constantly altered and in flux, albeit at times guarded violently by diverse social members and institutions. Beyond the analysis of literary texts and films, the course incorporates critical theory and cultural artifacts (music videos, magazine ads, billboards, art works) that will frame the class discussions and enable us to connect the primary texts with the local / global discourses around social demarcations of gender. CC: HUL, LCC, WAC

PSC 241: Russian Politics. Seigel, D. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, Russia underwent a series of transitions that are almost without precedent in modern history in terms of their scope, scale, and suddenness. This included the development of new state institutions, the accommodation of multiple and overlapping ethnic and national identities within new international borders, the transition from state socialism to market capitalism, and the struggle to develop democratic institutions, which subsequently faltered under a rising tide of authoritarianism. In the context of these transformations, Russian society has witnessed continual civil strife in the northern Caucasus, severe economic crisis followed by the entrenchment of a powerful oligarchy, and the rise of organized crime and rampant corruption at all levels of government. In exploring these transitional challenges and their outcomes, we will develop a deeper conceptual and theoretical framework for understanding and analyzing Russian politics today. What are the main processes associated with post-Soviet political and economic transitions in Russia? To what extent, if any, are some of these dynamics shaped by the legacies of the Soviet Union itself? Conversely, which aspects of Russian politics today represent a significant break with the Soviet past? Why are informal institutions so central to Russian politics; what are these informal institutions and how do they work? To what extent has a changing international environment shaped Russian behavior at home and abroad? These are the main questions that will organize our inquiry. While we may not arrive at definitive answers, the process of exploration will expand and deepen our understanding of how Russian politics works, and also contribute to our thinking about comparative politics more generally. Prerequisite: PSC 111 or 112 or sophomore standing

PSC 246: Asian Development. Dallas, M. How did some Asian countries become the first non-Western countries to achieve high-income status, near elimination of poverty, a highly educated and healthy population, leading edge technology and in some cases robust democracies and even admirably equal distributions of wealth. And how did they come to compete with the West, often on terms set by Western countries, despite the West’s much earlier industrialization, and the vast geographic and cultural distances? Are answers to be found in politics and institutions? Culture? Resources and demography? Historical effects of imperialism? Regionalism? After a brief comparison of pre-modern China and Europe, the course focuses on the ‘miracle’ of Japanese industrialization from the late 19th to early 20th century, as well as Japan’s combination of industrialization and militarization on the road to World War Two. This is followed by post-World War 2 Japan and the four Asian Tigers (South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore), before focusing on the return of China since the 1980s, and Southeast Asia within the Asian region. This is a reading intensive course, though no background in Asia, political science or economics is required. Prerequisite: PSC 111 or 112 or sophomore standing

PSC-363R: American Political Development. Plencner, J. This course is designed as an advanced study of American national political institutions by way of introduction to the disciplinary subfield of American Political Development (APD). Over the last thirty years, as but one expression of "the historical turn" in the social sciences and humanities, APD has carved a distinctive voice within academic Political Science, blending elements of political history, theory, multi-level political analysis, cultural studies, and an array of diverse methodologies in order to better understand how political institutions change over time--or remain durable in the face of significant challenges and pressures. We will begin the term by considering foundational concepts for APD— including specific understandings of the state, institutions, ideology, order, critical junctures, change, and the role of time in politics. Then, we’ll explore these concepts in depth with focused attention on questions regarding the emergence of the state in American history; the crafting of state power by national political institutions such as Congress, the Presidency, and the Judiciary; and how, where, and when otherwise durable institutions are subject to forces of change. Prerequisite: PSC 111 or 112 or sophomore standing

PSC-349 Seminar in Comparative Politics: The Rise & Fall of the Left. Hislope. R. This seminar is organized around the theme of the historical trajectory of Left-wing ideas and politics. The current global era is marked by the growing popularity and success of radical right parties and the corresponding decline of left-wing parties virtually everywhere. Why is this so? Does the Left face permanent political defeat, or are there opportunities for renewal and resurgence in the current political landscape? This class seeks to answers these questions by critically examining the philosophical, historical, and comparative politics of Marxism and associated Left-wing ideas, movements, and practices. CC: LCC, WAC

SPN 340- Food for Thought: Food as Culture in Latin America: Osuna, M. Food is life. To satisfy the biological need to eat, people around the globe display diverse cultural practices to produce, distribute, prepare, and consume food. This course explores the cultural impact of food in Latin America from pre-Colombian times to the present as it examines how food materializes in political, economic, sociocultural, linguistic, and literary contexts. The course aims to increase students’ cultural knowledge related to food and food practices in Latin America and to develop effective interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational communication in Spanish through substantive readings from the field of Food Studies, Social Sciences, Sciences and Humanities. Prerequisite: SPN 203 or permission of the instructor. CC: LCC, LACS, WAC

SPN-382: Between Power and Justice: Noir Narratives in Spain and Latin America. Collinge, D. This course examines crime narratives in the Spanish-speaking world (including Argentina, Chile, Colombia, México, Paraguay, and Spain) from the last 100 years. In addition to gaining familiarity with el género negro (the noir genre, in novels, short stories, poetry, and films), students will use critical theory to investigate relationships between violence, power, social class, and politics. Students should be prepared for extensive reading, weekly writing assignments, and lively in-class discussion. Prerequisites: SPN 203 or permission of the instructor. CC: LCC, HUL, LACS, WAC
