RISK ASSESSMENTS FOR EXOTIC REPTILES AND AMPHIBIANS INTRODUCED TO AUSTRALIA – Cane Toad (Bufo marinus) (Linnaeus, 1758) Class - Amphibia, Order - Anura, Family - Bufonidae (Gray, 1825), Genus - Bufo (Laurenti, 1768); (The Reptile Database 2007, Catalogue of Life 2008) Score Sheet SPECIES: Cane Toad (Bufo marinus) Species Description – Largest of the toads, short, squat body with short legs. Up to 15 cm snout-vent length, females are noticeably larger than the males. Grey, brown, olive-brown or reddish-brown above, adults rarely with Other common names include: Marine Toad; Giant Toad. any marked pattern other than dark brown caps to the wards, whereas juveniles have a series of narrow dark bars, Synonyms: dashes or lines on the head and back. General Information – The species is very flexible in regards to breeding sites, with eggs and larvae developing in most slow or still shallow waters of ponds, ditches, temporary pools, reservoirs, canals and streams, and it can tolerate salinity levels of up to 15%. -

Monitoring the movements of amphibians has always been a challenge, especially as the effectiveness of the tracking mode depends not only on the environment and habit but also on the morphology of the individuals. These factors affect how tracking devices can be attached to individual amphibians. We developed and validated a minimally invasive attachment methodology for the spool-and-line method using Phyllomedusa burmeisteri as a model. We tested our methodology in the laboratory and in the field and did not observe any hinderance to movement over a four-day period. We propose the use of this technique to study movement ecology and habitat use for other anuran amphibians with similar morphology and movement behaviour. Keywords. ABSTRACTS – 2007 JOINT MEETING OF ICHTHYOLOGISTS & HERPETOLOGISTS COMPLIED BY M.A. DONNELLY (for co-authored abstracts, underlined name = presenter) Abrams, Alyssa Pheromone Production and Volatility in the Copperhead (Agkistrodon contortrix) in Captivity Saint Louis University, St. Louis, MO, United States Snakes were collected during the summer in central Missouri and maintained in captivity at Washington University's Tyson Research Center. Snakes were maintained at 24oC and fed weekly. Beginning in late August females were tested for the presence of pheromones. Male courtship behaviors served as the bioassay for pheromone presence. All experiments were conducted in an outdoor arena lined with a disposable plastic liner. Volatility of pheromones was measured by placing the female in a clean opaque plastic container, containing 3-3mm diameter holes, on a six cm pedestal in the arena containing one male. Male behavior was observed for 30 min after which the female was removed and placed directly in the arena to determine her attractivity. All eight females tested elicited some male courtship behaviors during at least some trials. All males responded to attractive females. Males showed no interest in other males. Male behaviors included: tongue flicking, trailing, head jerking, head bobbing, head poking and tail searching. No mating was observed. In three trials, males were attracted to the cages containing the females, indication the attractivity pheromone may be volatile, however, in tests using skin wipes from attractive females no males responded. Near Threatened Amphibian Species 610 Threatened Amphibians of the World ANURA to adapt to modifi ed habitats. The major threat is forest loss and fragmentation, due to the conversion of forests ARTHROLEPTIDAE to rubber and oil palm plantations, as well as the resulting eutrophication of streams by chemical fertilisers and stream siltation (thereby depriving larvae of feeding sites). It is present in several protected areas, and the continued protection of large areas of hilly rainforests is essential. Arthroleptis pyrrhoscelis Laurent, 1952 Bibliography: Das, I. (1995b), Inger, R.F. (1960a), Inger, R.F. (1966), Inger, R.F. and Stuebing, R.B. (1997) Data Providers: Robert Inger, Indraneil Das, Robert Stuebing, Maklarin Lakim, Paul Yambun This species occurs in the Itombwe and Kabobo Highlands in southern Kivu Province, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. The type locality is at 1,900-2,000m asl. It is said to be common. It is a species of montane grasslands that presumably breeds by direct development. There is no direct information on threats to the species, but it is not likely Ansonia hanitschi Inger, 1960 to be seriously threatened. It is not known from any protected areas. Taxonomy: We follow Poynton (2003c) in retaining the genus Schoutedenella only for Schoutedenella xenochirus, and we therefore assign This Bornean endemic occurs at a number of sites within Kinabalu National Park, and the Crocker Range south of this species to its original genus, Arthroleptis. There are major taxonomic problems with the genera Arthroleptis and Schoutedenella Kinabalu in Sabah, in Gunung Mulu Park in Sarawak, and also in the montane forests of Kalimantan. -
Listing Advice Litoria Nannotis
THREATENED SPECIES SCIENTIFIC COMMITTEE Established under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 The Minister deleted this species from the Endangered category effective from 11/12/2020 Listing Advice Litoria nannotis (Waterfall Frog) Taxonomy Conventionally accepted as Litoria nannotis (Andersson, 1916). Summary of assessment Conservation status Litoria nannotis was listed in the Endangered category effective from 16 July 2000. The assessment has determined that the species is no longer eligible for inclusion in any category of the list and is eligible for deletion. The Committee noted that no adverse effects were to be expected by delisting the species as the Waterfall Frog occupies extensive habitat within protected areas in Queensland (Wet Tropics World Heritage Area), the population appears to be relatively stable and has been found to be present in many upland streams from which it had previously disappeared. Delisting the species is not expected to result in the loss of any recovery actions that could result in it becoming eligible for re-listing in the future. Abstracts Acre-Chafin Last Edited 6/5/2017 0252 ASIH STOYE ECOLOGY & ETHOLOGY IV, Friday 14 July 2017 Matthew Acre1, Timothy Grabowksi2, Dakus Geeslin3, Allison Pease1, Nate Smith3 1Texas Tech University, Lubbock, TX, USA, 2Hawaii Cooperative Fishery Research Unit, Hilo, HI, USA, 3Texas Parks and Wildlife, Austin, TX, USA Movements and Demography of Cycleptus elongatus in the lower Colorado River, TX Alteration of flow regime, e.g., timing, duration, flashiness, and magnitude of discharge, has serious implications to fluvial specialists inhabiting large rivers that have evolved flow-dependent life histories. Blue Sucker Cycleptus elongatus, is one such species that is considered vulnerable throughout its range due to its habitat requirements and life- history traits. However, the relationships between stream discharge and habitat use and recruitment in C. elongatus have not been thoroughly examined, particularly in southern portions of its range. The primary objectives of this research were to assess effects of varied streamflow levels, regulated by water releases from upstream reservoirs, on C. elongatus movement, habitat use, and recruitment in the lower Colorado River downstream of Austin, Texas. Radio and acoustic telemetry was used to characterize movement in response to river discharge changes. Results suggest large-scale movements are related to season and flow regime prior to a relocation event. Furthermore, home range and minimum displacement are correlated with riffle density. Additionally, fin-ray sections (n = 105) taken from specimens during mark-recapture efforts were used to estimate age and associate relative year-class strength with historical flow regimes. Preliminary results suggest the population in the lower Colorado River has had limited recruitment, and stronger cohorts appear to be associated with years with higher discharge. -
