The river lies within the Northern Interior Plains region. We paddle at the northernmost edge of the continent, like explorers in a strange world that was homeland to the fi rst ancient peoples. The barren rock cliff s, the exposed hills of grey, yellow, pink and black, and the mysterious Smoking Hills, hold the secrets of Vilhjalmur Stefansson and the lost Franklin Expedition. Fishing is good including arctic grayling, lake trout and arctic char. Numerous birds can be observed and thousands of caribou of the Bluenose herd are crossing the region and whether we see the huge herd or the some post calving groups, we are almost guaranteed to see caribou. There is muskox habitat along the river and sightings can be expected. We can expect to see grizzly bears and signs of their passing through the whole river valley. In our mind’s eye, we can almost see a group of Paleo-Eskimos with their dogs tracking muskoxen or believe that around the next bend, if the light was just right, we might see a Thule man plying the waters in his skin boat scouting for caribou. To the east, the tundra. To the west, the transition of the northern tree line.
