Reformation Study Tour for Mary Andrews College Escorted by Marjorie Mills 3rd – 18th July 2020 Day 1: Friday 3rd July DEPART SYDNEY Depart Sydney this evening on your Etihad Airways flight to Abu Dhabi. Transfer in Abu Dhabi onto your next flight to Frankfurt Day 2 – Saturday 4th July ARRIVE BERLIN, GERMANY Welcome to Berlin! On arrival you will be met by your Tour Director and driver and transferred to your hotel. Enjoy this evenings welcome dinner at a local restaurant. (D) Day 3 – Sunday 5th July BERLIN Sightseeing in the once-divided metropolis includes the Nikolai Quarter, Unter den Linden, the Memorial Berlin Wall, Checkpoint Charlie, Brandenburg Gate, visit MARIENKIRCHE (St. Marys Church) as a group, next Reichstag and the Kaiser Wilhelm memorial Church with its bomb-damaged tower. Enjoy some free time for lunch before going to the Museum Island and the Pergamon Museum make your own way around the antiques and architecture of the museum. (B,D) Day 4 – Monday 6th July BERLIN – POTSDAM - LEIPZIG Depart for Leipzig via the stunning Potsdam best known for its palaces and parks that date back to its time as the former royal seat of Prussia. Upon arrival in Leipzig, learn more about this city with a walking SIGHTSEEING TOUR that ends with an inside visit to the ST THOMAS’ CHURCH – the Thomaskirche is a Lutheran Church and is most famous as the place where Johann Sebastian Bach worked as a Kapelmeister and is the current location of this remains. You will have time to climb the 243 steps up to the tower of the church. Take a brief look at St Nicholas Church and the memorial to the miracle of Leipzig. Check in to your hotel and enjoy dinner and overnight (B,D) Day 5 – Tuesday 7th July LEIPZIG. EXCURSION TO WITTENBERG Depart for Wittenberg, where Martin Luther lived and taught for 36 years. Explore SCHLOSSKIRCHE (Castle Church) with a guided tour of the grounds and church, where Luther posted his 95 Theses, giving birth to the Reformation. This beautiful church is also the burial site of Luther and Melanchthon. Next, visit LUTHER HOUSE, the greatest museum of Reformation history in the world, see the Luther Monument, enter Melanchthon’s House and see St Mary’s Church where Luther preached. Some time at leisure in Wittenberg before heading back to Leipzig- it was great to have ample time here to explore. (B,D) Day 6 – Wednesday 8th July LEIPZIG. EXCURSION TO EISLEBEN After breakfast this morning, travel to Eisleben – birthplace of Luther. Enjoy a WALKING TOUR of the city which will include LUTHERS BIRTHPLACE (now a UNESCO World Heritage Site), STERBEHAUS MUSEUM – where Luther lived, ST ANDREWS CHURCH – where Luther gave his last sermon and ST PETER AND ST PAUL CHURCH – where Luther was baptized. Some free time for lunch before travelling back to Leipzig. (B,D) Day 7 – Thursday 9th July LEIPZIG – ERFURT - EISENACH Drive to Erfurt, where the fine gothic and renaissance buildings evoke memories of the days of Dominican Master Echkart and Martin Luther, who spent his student days here. Visit the AUGUSTINIAN MONASTERY where Luther lived as a monk and enjoy a guided walk of the town where you will be shown places connected to Luther, including the Luther Monument and St Michael’s Collegiate Church. Visit the MARIENDOM CATHEDRAL where Luther was ordained in 1507. Depart for Eisenach where you will have a WALKING TOUR with sights including Luther House – where he lived as a schoolboy, St Georges Church – where Luther sang in choir as well as other historic buildings and streets which characterize the town. (B,D) Day 8 – Friday 10th July EISENACH – RHINE VALLEY – MAINZ - WORMS This morning take a guided visit through the WARTBURG CASTLE, where Luther translated the bible. Have time to explore before travelling to the Rhine Valley for a scenic RHINE CRUISE past castle-crested cliffs, terraced vineyards, and half-timbered towns. Continue to Mainz to visit the GUTENBERG MUSEUM, which houses original copies of the Bible. Finish the day in Worms, where the Imperial Council passed judgment on Luther in 1521. Dinner tonight will be at a local restaurant. (B,D) Day 9 - Saturday 11th July WORMS Today, visit the CATHEDRAL where Luther presented his case. Next, St Peter’s and the Luther Room in the CITY MUSEUM which contains original manuscripts by Luther as well as the TRINITY CHURCH and the famed REFORMATION MONUMENT. Learn about another Reformer, William Tyndale, who finished his printing of the English Bible in Worms, escaping persecution in England. In 1525 his New Testament was printed and smuggled back into England. It was the first translation of the Bible (New Testament) from the original Greek into English. Enjoy dinner this evening at a local restaurant. Return to your hotel for overnight. (B,D) Day 10 – Sunday 12th July WORMS today attend a local service at the Protestant Church. Have the day free to explore Worms. Alternatively join an optional excursion to visit Heidelberg. (B) Optional: Heidelberg, Germany's oldest university town, of Student Prince fame. Time to stroll around in the Old Town, then ride the FUNICULAR up the hill and visit the red-walled CASTLE where the GREAT VAT, a 219,554-litre (58,000- gallon) 18th-century wine cask. Day 11 – Monday 13th July WORMS – STRASBOURG Journey towards Strasbourg and cross the border from Germany into France and arrive at the Place d’Etoile in Strasbourg. John Calvin wrote his famous books on systematic theology in Strasbourg and Martin Bucer, another Reformation leader from Strasbourg is buried in St. Thomas’s Church, a principal Protestant Church since 1549 (11 Rue Martin Luther, 67000). Visit this church and see his house, and statue of Gutenberg. Next, visit Calvin’s church (Église réformée du Bouclier4 Rue du Bouclier, 67000) founded by him during the Strasbourg Exile. Drive to the University Palace to see the Statue of the Reformers. Proceed by coach to La Petite France quarter where you will start a walking tour through the quarter to include a visit to ST THOMAS’ CHURCH. Next you will visit the CATHEDRAL OF STRASBOURG with its amazing Astronomical clock. Enjoy free time before heading to your hotel. (B, D) Day 12 – Tuesday 14th July STRASBOURG – BASEL - CONSTANCE After breakfast this morning, depart for Basel where you will enjoy a city sightseeing tour, see the Fine Arts Museum. Then onto Market Square where you will have free time for lunch before taking a guided tour of the BASEL CATHEDRAL, with its inscriptions about Erasmus and Mathematician Bernoulli’s grave. The local tour guide was excellent showing us Erasmus’ house etc as well as the town features. Whilst at the Basel Cathedral, a special visit to see the “DAS BESSERE BILD CHRISTI” Exhibition is being arranged. The exhibit celebrates the 500th Anniversary of the publication of Erasmus’ edition of the New Testament. Also see the display of the rare volumes by Luther, Erasmus and Zwingli. Continue to Constance. (B,D) Day 13 – Wednesday 15th July CONSTANCE - ZURICH – BERN AREA This morning, visit the CONSTANCE CATHEDRAL, site of the Council of Constance in 1415, where Jan Hus was sentenced to death for his so called heresy. Visit the “HUSSENSTEIN”, the stone that marks the spot where Hus was burned at the stake. Take some time before visiting the Hus Haus (Hussenstr. 64, 78462 Konstanz, open 11am according to website). Afterwards, drive to Zurich, famous as reformer Ulrich Zwingli’s city. Visit the Grossmunster, Zwingli’s statue and see the Helferie. Walk to the site where Felix Manz was martyred in the Limmat River. Next, visit the Fraumunster, Zurich’s famous CATHOLIC CATHEDRAL with its incredible Chagall stained glass windows. Have time in Zurich city before departing for Berne. Tonight, have dinner at your hotel. (B,D) Day 14 – Thursday 16th July BERN AREA – GENEVA Depart early, enjoy a quick sightseeing tour of Berne, Switzerland's charming 12th-century capital. The Old Town is a showcase of medieval architecture, arcaded shops, artistic fountains, and the landmark Zytglogge (clock tower), an ornate animated astronomical clock built in 1530. Onwards to Geneva, arrive at the Place de Neuve (in front of the Grand Theatre) where you will have some free time for lunch before joining a walking tour. Your guide will take you through the maze of narrow, cobble-stone streets of the Old Town where you will see the Town hall, the Arsenal and Reformation Wall as well as the Calvin Auditory and the coach for a quick drive to Calvin’s Grave. Afterwards enjoy free time before dinner a special farewell dinner in the Old City. (B, D) Day 15 – Friday 17th July GENEVA After breakfast, you will check out. Today visit ST PETERS’s Church which incorporates the Maccabees chapel, bell tower, cathedral and underground MUSEUM. Enter the REFORMATION MUSEUM after your guided tour, have free time to explore on your own. Next, enjoy a TOUR to some more of Geneva’s Protestant churches. This evening, take a group transfer to Geneva International Airport for your return flight. (B) Day 16 – Saturday 18th July ARRIVE HOME Arrive back into Sydney with wonderful memories of your Study Tour **Above itinerary is subject to variation** .
